With the increase in the performance of computing and communications equipment and the crystallization of new approaches in the education sciences (pedagogy, docimology, behavioural and learning psychology), complex educational systems tend to impose as indispensable working tools for modern education. Strong theoretical models and increasingly advanced information and communication technologies have led to a significant increase in the effectiveness of today's educational computer systems. The continued expansion of modern communications systems on a global and national scale and increased access to the Internet has led to the development and diversification of ways to disseminate the educational content in digital form. The significant development over the last decade of ICT and the implementation of more and more technologies in education are evidenced by the increasing supply of complex educational systems characterized by an ever higher quality. At present, information systems devoted to the educational process can be analysed in terms of several criteria: the objectives pursued; targeted users; educational services offered; the resources involved; ergonomics and performance of systems; purchase, implementation, and maintenance costs. In the Faculty of Communication and Public Relations, within the National School of Political and Administrative Studies, there is a 19-year experience in designing, performing and implementing tests designed to be used in computer assisted self-training, self-assessment and evaluation modalities. There is a framework for designing tests and items that was distributed to most of the teachers and used when the tests were created. Thus, the erroneous didactic design of some docimological tests was avoided to a great extent and the performance of very thorough analyses of performances was possible, that were performed on a computer.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129493845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scholarly journals and books are at the heart of research and science, and, therefore, it is very important for Romanian research libraries to understand the aims, scope and impact of open access. Romania is the first country where EU Framework Programme for Research, Development and Innovation Horizon 2020 was launched and this can be an extremely significant opportunity for Romanian libraries to increase their role in scientific life. Nowadays, librarians are very much implied in search of scientific open access information, in order to support knowledge production and consumption in research institutes and universities. There are a lot of international success models for open access, and this aspect is very significant for Romanian librarians, in order to properly assist researchers in their work. The most important publishers support both gold and green open access, and, in matters pertaining this latter option, libraries offer their support by paying subscriptions to journals with open archive. As an example of positive attitude regarding open access and, implicitly, open science, a series of researchers at the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy (IMAR) publish their articles in open access, and their works can be read free from EuDML (The European Digital Mathematics Library), on their personal pages which can be accessed from the web-page of IMAR, or in journals with open access policies. The article aims to present the results of a survey on opinions and approaches of IMAR's researchers regarding open access publishing. Digital preservation and data management are, also, vital for research libraries in contemporary digital age. Librarians supporting researchers in institutes and universities must also comply with the ethics principles of open access, in terms of copyright and licensing issues, and so they can better carry out their mission by supporting authors in publishing in open access their high quality results, in the context of the scientific developments in the modern world.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124583076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such free generation of answers by students enables what we may call true assessment because these answers offer a direct view of learners’ mental models. Nevertheless, assessing open ended learner responses is extremely challenging, e.g., if done manually by experts it becomes prohibitively expensive to scale up to millions of learners. To address this scalability challenge, automated methods to assess students' free responses are being explored. To this end, we present a novel solution to automatically assess open ended learner responses based on recent advances in computational linguistics and optimization algorithms. Our proposed solution accounts for linguistic phenomena such as anaphora resolution and negation in order to reach a deeper level of semantic interpretation of student answers. This is a key advantage compared to previous methods that focus primarily on distributional semantic representations of texts. Furthermore, our method provides both a holistic score as well as a detailed explanation of the score by performing a concept-level analysis of student responses. We present results obtained with the proposed method on a dataset that is widely used to evaluate automated methods for assessing open ended learner responses. The results indicate that our method is extremely competitive or surpasses the performance of previously proposed methods. Furthermore, by being able to pick on concepts students have yet to articulate, it enables the development of more personalized and dynamic generation of feedback in intelligent tutoring systems.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121788684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, the online development included also tools needed for human resources management and time management. Politehnica University of Timisoara uses, since 2009, the university Virtual Campus CVUPT, a Moodle based development. As many of Moodle instances are used in distance education settings, where activities happen also face-to-face in university labs, any off-platform relevant activities need to be reported and quantified manually. This is especially important in our university educational setting, where reported activity affects many teaching/learning indicators, including the academic staff' time reports. In order to properly mitigate this situation, we have developed a tool allowing Moodle integration with the official reporting procedure used by the academic staff from the distance education courses in our University. In this paper, we present the new methodology, the development process as well as the initial evaluation, by comparing the process of obtaining results from offline, previous form-based reports submitted in the past, with those obtained using the online tool in CVUPT. The evaluation run by the eLearning Center team revealed important feedback on time management, that will generate more change, many updates and other adaptations of the reporting tool in CVUPT. We can conclude that, for its first iteration, the online reporting tool was seen as a positive development, conducted to better time management of the distance education academic staff. Several proposed improvements are already in plan for the second development.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121824688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, in Romania this modern way of training is at the beginning, despite the fact that we have a top IT industry, high internet speed and a significant percentage of internet users. In the last few years, several steps have been taken to develop online learning by creating several more important platforms, including www.academika.ro. Even if it is not very used, the platform can compete with any global platform due to its potential and architecture. The mission of the online learning platform Academika is to bring together teachers, students, trainers, experts, self-governments and other categories of beneficiaries in a virtual space where everyone involved can win. The main sections for the user are: profile, diplomas, groups, learning, teaching, messages and wallet. Courses are structured into categories, namely: Academics; Business; Design; Development; Health & Fitness; IT & Software; Language; Lifestyle; Marketing; Music; Office productivity; Personal development; Photography. Some of the courses are offered free of charge, others are paid or certain discounts. Courses are for both beginners and advanced learners, namely: rookie, beginner, intermediate, advanced, elite. The courses are in Romanian, English and Spanish, with the possibility of adding other languages. The big advantage of the Academika platform is that the team of programmers has also built an online learning platform, being one of the most successful platforms in the world. This helps to avoid some functionality issues. As a development strategy, all the universities in the country will be approached, where platform presentations will be realized and collaboration protocols will be concluded. Teachers will be able to offer a modern way of teaching, posting their courses or books. It is very interesting that the platform offers the possibility of interaction between the teacher and the student in real time through live streaming. After loading the platform with materials, the platform will be promoted among both students and other users.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121108524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The period of the pendulum is calculated for a certain value of the initial angular amplitude and it is compared with the zero, one and two-order approximations from the expansion series of the period. Moreover, the velocity and tension force of the thread are calculated according to the angular displacement from the input data. It is shown how the complete elliptic integral of the first kind can be evaluated in the spreadsheet, through the numerical algorithm of the trapezium, from the formula of the oscillation period. The tool charts are placed in the same spreadsheet with the input data and the numeric results to rapidly trace the graphical feedback to data change. The oscillation period was graphically rendered based on the initial angular amplitude and the value of the period for the amplitude fixed in the input data has been highlighted on the graph. Another graph overlaps the period-initial angular amplitude one with the graphs of zero and one-order approximations of the period. The other graph shows, at a set value of the amplitude in the input data, the pendulum velocity and the tension force of the thread according to the initial angular displacement. In the tension force-angle graph, the weight force is highlighted and also the maximum range of values for the tension force is highlighted according to the initial angular amplitude. With the help of this graph, it can be observed that, at small oscillations, the tension in the thread varies slowly with the angular displacement around certain values close to the value of the weight force. This justifies the approximations made when establishing the calculation formula for the period of small oscillations. It is thus demonstrated that the spreadsheet allows to both solve the non-linear equation of the simple pendulum and to graphically analyze some measures characteristic for the oscillatory motion. By using the tool in the classroom, students can simulate the simple pendulum oscillatory motion at any value of the initial angular amplitude and can more easily clarify under which conditions the oscillations of the pendulum can be considered as isocrone.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127490224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the multitude of mobile device owners, new apps may serve for informing about the potential risks and creating situation awareness, based on events and responses specific to students and academics. This fits the existing trend to take advantage of the mobile technologies for data acquisition, visualization, decision and warning in hazard and emergency management. For the scope of a campus, we analyzed documents and rules adopted within our institution, and public information provided by other universities worldwide. We selected a set of critical situations, like: fire, earthquake, bomb threat, power outage, campus violence, harassment etc. Generally, these situations are associated with a descriptive procedure to be followed. The contribution presented in this paper is twofold. On the one side, we transformed the text into graph-based, color-coded representations, for visualization support. On the other side, we added functionality to submit event reports from mobile devices and classify them according the predefined set of critical situations, characteristic for the university activities. The Android application communicates with a platform that manages the reports, stores images transmitted by users, and sends notifications. The reports are visible to other users, who can add comments and contribute for a better assessment of the situation. Currently, the reports are integrated and made available to a responsible person, with no recommendation being generated automatically. Future work will be focused on analysis of reports and clustering, to increase situation awareness and campus-specific decision support.","PeriodicalId":371908,"journal":{"name":"14th International Conference eLearning and Software for Education","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133778697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
