The problem is to minimise the overall supply chain cost consisting of inventory order cost, inventory unit purchasing cost, inventory storage cost, transport booking cost, jam storage cost, delivery travel distance cost and jam arrival earliness and tardiness costs. We report on how we devised and taught this case to First Year Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering students at the University of Melbourne.","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"20-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.3.20","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66521525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DEA is often the only available tool that enables managers to evaluate the relative efficiencies of various business units in the presence of multiple performance measures. Applichem is a case study about a multinational chemical company, with six manufacturing plants located all over the world. The manufacturing plants' efficiencies are highly varied and in the presence of excessive capacity, management is having a difficult time determining which plants must be shut down. This case is often studied from an optimization perspective, with the objective of matching customer demands with plant capacities at the lowest possible cost. The case involves multiple measures of performance e.g. labor cost, material cost, etc., which makes it ideal for introducing and demonstrating DEA from a practical perspective. This paper details how such an analysis can be presented in a business classroom.","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"38-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.3.38","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66521193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These facts are well known but they raise fundamental questions for anyone interested in scholarly activity related to teaching MS/OR. Why do those of us who teach MS/OR spend so little time learning about teaching? Why is there essentially no literature (until recently) on teaching our subjects? Can there be a scholarship of teaching MS/OR? And the most provocative question: can the scholarship of teaching MS/OR ever deserve to be called research ?","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"48-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.3.48","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66521362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No longer can a company place its entire focus on its own operations because long-term success is becoming increasingly dependent on actions and decisions of upstream and downstream firms in the supply chain. Organizations that effectively collaborate with their supply chain partners position themselves for success in 21st-century markets. In order to prepare our students to make decisions in this complex environment, educators in operations research and management science must introduce students to the important interactions which are essential to effective supply chain management. \u0000 \u0000We have developed a classroom supply chain simulation incorporating Lego™ bricks to highlight the flow of materials, products, and information through the channel. Students assume the responsibilities of various supply chain functions and must work together to provide finished products according to a production schedule and a rush customer order. The exercise was designed for an undergraduate introductory course in supply chain management, transportation and logistics, or management science in a business or industrial engineering school. It reinforces lectures and discussions about the different functional areas of the supply chain and serves to energize students about the remainder of their curriculum in the field. The follow-up assignments included with the simulation allow students to execute the major steps of the production planning process within the familiar context of the company used in the simulation exercise.","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"28-37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.3.28","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66521082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high profile of hurricane forecasts---particularly during the 2004 season in which four hurricanes made landfall in Florida, and during the 2005 season when hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the surrounding region---makes them a convenient, visible, and ideal illustrative classroom example. This paper outlines 25 business forecasting principles and their direct parallels in hurricane forecasting. This compilation has been successfully used by author as a basis for an in-class review of forecasting in an undergraduate operations management introductory course. A report of the positive student feedback and comparative test results is provided.","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.2.1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66520814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Suppose that N objects computers, people, animals, plants are interacting in pairs. Every time unit for example, a second for a computer, a day or a week for people, each object randomly selects another object and contacts it. Suppose that one object is infected with a virus. How long will it take until all objects are infected? How many objects are infected after 5 time units? This process is a simplified model for the spread of AIDS among humans, computer viruses among computers, or any communicable disease among humans, animals, or plants.","PeriodicalId":37137,"journal":{"name":"INFORMS Transactions on Education","volume":"6 1","pages":"32-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/ITED.6.2.32","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66520667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
