However, the safety indicators of expressways, including skid-resistance and durability, decline with time. Public roads that have been in use for an extended period possess a higher level of danger to some extent. In order to improve the safety indicators such as skid-resistance and durability of the road, the discrete element method (DEM) is used to study the proportion of the asphalt mixture, and the spatial structure of the coarse aggregates and asphalt mortar are compared and analyzed. Relevant models are established to compare their pendulum values and structure-depth attenuation. The simulation results show that when the mixture ratio changes, the pendulum value also changes accordingly. When limestone replaces the fine aggregate in the andesite, its pendulum value is increased by 1.5%. When the fine aggregate is limestone and the surface polishing times do not exceed 3500 times, the 7/3S1 asphalt mixture has the best pendulum value. However, as the polishing times continue to increase, the mixture ratio also changes. Compared with the 7/3S1 asphalt mixture, the 8/2S1 asphalt mixture has better effect. When the fine aggregate is replaced by limestone, no matter what form the coarse aggregate is, the pendulum value has been improved to a certain extent comparing with the previous mixture. A2 S2, 5/5S2, 7/3S2 and 8/2S2 blends, compared with A2 A2, 5/5A2, 7/3A2 and 8/2A2 blends, the pendulum value was increased by 1.7 %, 0.5 %, 2.3 %, and 2.1 % respectively. The study shows that in different proportions of coarse aggregates, as the surface texture richness of the blended aggregate increases, the differences between the aggregates also increases, and skid-resistance and durability are also enhanced. The research results provide a blending method to increase the skid resistance and durability of asphalt pavement.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130924743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because multilayer network models are capable of representing the interdependencies between infrastructure components, they have been widely used to analyse the robustness of infrastructure systems. This present study is a systematic review of literature, published since 2010. It aims to investigate how multilayer network models have been used in analysing the robustness of infrastructure systems. According to findings, percolation theory was the most popular method used in about 57% of papers. Regarding the properties, coupling strength and node degree were the most common while directed links and feedback conditions were the least common. The following gaps were identified which provide opportunities for further research. These include the absence of models based on real-world data and the need for models that make fewer simplifying assumptions about complex systems. No papers considered all potential properties, and their effect on boosting or weakening each other’s effect. By considering all properties, the importance of different properties on the robustness of infrastructure systems can be quantified and compared in future studies.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115700928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the urban renewal projects, the renovation of old neighborhoods is an important part. Most of the traditional renovations only consider the cost impact, ignoring the influence of residents’ wishes and environmental factors. Therefore, an intelligent preference model for retrofitting solutions becomes crucial. This study establishes a multi-objective optimization model for the renovation of old neighborhoods under the concept of urban regeneration, keeping in mind the theme of smart cities. The study innovatively solves by optimizing a genetic algorithm to obtain the optimal solution for the renovation of old neighborhoods. Through data analysis and model testing of the renovated old neighborhoods, the results show that the method has an error of 2.04d for the renovation duration, 0.89% for the cost and 0.43% for the quality score. The method significantly improves the efficiency of the search for excellence, while the study provides a reference path for the smart retrofitting of old neighborhoods.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"384 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132476056","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite advantages, smartphone sensors are originally designed for user utility rather than technical engineering applications (e.g., vibration analysis and modal identification). Sampling jitter is among those problems adversely influencing smartphone performance as a scientific device that can be used for characterizing civil infrastructure dynamic characteristics. With the inconsistencies in sampling period due to jitter effects, identified modal frequencies of a structure can deviate from the actual value, which is artificially introduced by the smartphone clock errors. In this study, the authors formulate the statistical characteristics of smartphone sampling period through Kernel distribution and address a digital reconstruction remedy to the sampling jitter problem. Through introductory simulations of a sine wave and physical implementations through shaking table tests equipped with smartphones, the efficiency of Kernel distribution diagnosis and signal reconstruction remedy is presented. Following the simulation and laboratory applications, the proposed techniques are applied to vibration monitoring of a steel pedestrian bridge in terms of the auto power spectral density and short-time Fourier transform of single-output signals. The results show successful rehabilitation of accelerometer data from smartphones, removing jitter-induced errors to a significant extent and accordingly improving the identification accuracy currently in a single-output setting.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133468713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the rapid development of the construction industry, this proportion is still growing. On the whole, there is a lack of analysis on the factors related to energy consumption and comfort in the process of building scheme design at this stage. In addition, designers have insufficient understanding of the theoretical system of low-energy buildings, and it is difficult to optimise the scheme throughout the design. To solve these problems, the research first proposes an integrated design method of green buildings based on building information modelling technology. This method integrates and shares engineering information, problem solving, simulation tools, architectural model applications, and architectural team communication platforms, which can effectively improve the problem that the current green building projects do not belong to each other when designing. The research also proposes a multi-objective optimisation algorithm based on genetic algorithm. The proposed method optimises the overall design of green buildings, especially the design of natural lighting, starting from the influence relationship between targets and targets and between targets and enclosure systems. To obtain the optimal effect, the virtual function of Traind is selected as the training function after testing. In addition, the model obtains a reasonable range of design parameters according to the energy consumption of the building in the uncomfortable time. Finally, the method proposed in the study was tested. The experimental results found that compared with the initial scheme, the overall energy consumption of the optimised scheme was reduced by 10.46%; The natural light coefficient was increased by 0.44%; The natural pressure Pa hour coefficient was optimised by 5.38%. The optimisation scheme can effectively reduce the energy consumption of the building in the whole life cycle and improve the comfort.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"59 19","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120869036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three typical modular construction cases: Leishenshan Hospital in Wuhan, media residence hotel for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeong-Chang and Global Academy in Hayes, were selected and analysed. Findings show that modular construction method can shorten construction time, facilitate collaborations between stakeholders, enable effective management, save labors and costs, reduce waste, and minimize impacts on local community. The eco-friendly design allows the modular buildings to be recycled or relocated for some other use purposes. The engagement of current engineering technologies upgrades the construction quality and enhances the project management. It is expected that modular design and construction would be an appropriate option to construct multifunctional buildings, particularly for short-term events or in some urgent circumstances. On the other hand, it is suggested that more effective logistic approaches should be used to transport modules to the site and new technologies focusing on flexibly resizing or reshaping modules could be developed. The modular technology is expected to be employed in constructing more permanent buildings by improving the quality and sustainability.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121763361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These globalization processes have relied on logistics to be able to offer better door-to-door services. In Spain, this trend has a direct impact on ports, so that the trend is towards Ports 4.0. For this reason, Puertos del Estado has launched the Ports 4.0 project. In order to have a diagnosis of the current situation and to face the Ports 4.0 project, it is proposed to use the Business Observation Tool, as it not only allows to analyze the state of the conditions of the Ports 4.0 project of the Spanish Port System, but also allows to establish the possible scenarios of the Ports 4.0 proposal. The main conclusion of its application is that the Spanish Port System is well positioned towards the so-called Smart Ports or Ports 4.0, although a new port model is necessary in order to develop it.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121928630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, an optimised two-dimensional convolution neural networks (CNN) with the network-in-network architecture is built, trained, and tested to detect damage of various severity and location in a bridge, using train-borne measurements only. As an input, cross-correlation of signals from two train bogies is used as a damage-sensitive feature for the first time. The proposed method in this study is applied to a cohort of simulated acceleration measurements on a nominal RC4 power car passing over a 25 m simply-supported reinforced concrete bridge. The presented method has shown great accuracy in detecting damage under operational condition. The sensitivity and robustness of the approach are tested and validated for 18 damage severity and location scenarios and 100 random vehicle speeds, ranging between 70 to 130 kph. This is of particular value as speed defines the length of the train-borne signal whilst passing over the bridge, hence the amount of information manifested in a single passing. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach for data-driven damage detection using train-borne measurement only.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128106811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
