The semantic difference (SD) analysis method was selected to evaluate landscape characteristics. In the SBE method, plant growth, sense of hierarchy, landscape diversity, and color richness was used as the evaluation factors. 40 professional and non-professional groups evaluated the 100 landscape samples. In the SD method, ten adjective pairs were selected as the evaluation criteria for the landscape features in the study. The research indicates that the SBE values of the professional and non-professional groups are strongly correlated. The non-professional group is more volatile and unstable. Professional evaluations of the plant community’s aesthetic value typically include considerations of elements such as plant growth, hierarchy, diversity of landscape, and color richness. In the evaluation of the landscape diversity, hierarchy, color richness, and plant growth, through the SD landscape analysis, the evaluators were able to conduct a correlation analysis of the landscape characteristics and quality of the green plant landscape. This is to find the landscape features that have the most significant impact on the landscape quality.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"1 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139270247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Research on the application of BIM technology in commercial building construction management","authors":"Ying Yang","doi":"10.1680/jsmic.23.00020","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1680/jsmic.23.00020","url":null,"abstract":"The development of information technology plays an important role in building engineering design, construction, and cost management. This is intended to support the smooth progress of construction projects by optimizing the entire construction process, reducing engineering costs, and improving construction efficiency. In order to further improve the development of this field, this study combines the application of building technology with the project construction management process based on Building Information Modeling (BIM). In response to the demand for multi-objective optimization, this study established a multi-objective optimization model with two stages: time cost and time resource balance, and utilized this model to optimize resource allocation and reduce construction costs. In order to solve this multi-objective solving problem, genetic algorithm was used to solve the model, and the optimal construction management plan was obtained, which is suitable for large commercial buildings. During the construction process, as the construction period progresses, the construction cost gradually increases. Through the optimal construction management plan of this study, the optimal construction period of the project was determined to be 438 days. Under this construction period, the cost of this phase of the project is 2712.32 million yuan. Compared to the project planning cost, the total cost decreased by 17.05%. This result indicates that through the collaborative work of construction management mode and BIM technology, the entire construction process of the project has been effectively optimized. In addition, the construction management model of this study provides valuable benchmarks for the development of large-scale construction projects. It demonstrates how to use BIM technology and optimization models to improve the construction process, and provides a reference for the future development of more advanced construction management technologies.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"80 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139269113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kharazi, Amir H Behzadan","doi":"10.1680/jsmic.22.00029","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1680/jsmic.22.00029","url":null,"abstract":"Successful flood response and evacuation require timely access to reliable flood depth information in urban areas. However, existing flood depth mapping tools do not provide real-time flood depth information in residential areas. In this paper, a deep convolutional neural network is used to determine flood depth through the analysis of crowdsourced images of submerged stop signs. Model performance in pole length estimation is tested on a test set, achieving root mean squared error (RMSE) of 10.200 in. on pre-flood photos and 6.156 in. on post-flood photos, and an average processing time of 0.05 seconds. The performance of the developed model is tested on two case studies: Hurricane Ian in the U.S. (2022), and the Pacific Northwest floods in the U.S. and Canada (2021), yielding MAE of 4.375 in. and 6.978 in., respectively. The overall MAE for both floods was achieved as 5.807 in., which is on par with previous studies. Additionally, detected flood depths are compared with readings reported by the nearest flood gauge on the same date. The outcome of this study demonstrates the applicability of this approach to low-cost, accurate, scalable, and real-time flood risk mapping in most geographical locations, particularly in places where flood gauge reading is not attainable.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"15 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139269499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of this study is to design building skin schemes and control modes with better climate adaptability. The experimental results show that the illumination and humidity control effect of Illumination mode group is the best, and the temperature control performance is also relatively good. It is the scheme with the best overall control performance. Its comfortable illumination time ratio and comfortable humidity time ratio are 65.2% and 76.3%, respectively, which are significantly higher than other schemes. The absolute differences between the average room temperature, average room temperature, and target temperature median values in Illumination mode group were 25.7°C and 1.7°C, respectively, with minimal differences in temperature control effects compared to other experimental groups. The experimental results indicated that controlling the opening and closing angles of building louvers according to the illumination of solar radiation can maximize the dynamic climate adaptability of the building. The results of this study will provide some useful references for improving the climate adaptability of civil buildings.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126391485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microcontroller development boards offer similar functionality, but at a lower cost. Still, they are not widely used, because they are supposed to be slow. This paper aims to evaluate the abilities of modern microcontrollers and compares them to single-board computers. For this purpose experiments concerning power consumption and performance evaluation is conducted. The results suggest that promising low-cost microcontrollers exist, which could be applied to reduce cost and energy consumption per node or increase the number of nodes used simultaneously in one monitoring system.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126670541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And the theoretical analysis of the single pile bearing capacity is conducted, primarily involving the calculation of bridge pile foundation settlement, horizontal resistance, and axial bearing capacity. At the same time, considering that the time series data generated in the actual process often has characteristics of imbalance between classes, a cost sensitive hybrid network (CSHN) model is also constructed. Its significance is to analyze the bridge reinforcement performance data. The experimental results showed that compared with the cross entropy loss function, the introduction of a cost-sensitive loss function can significantly improve the monitoring accuracy of abnormal data sets. The score of ACC-, G-means, and F-measures is higher than that of specific cross entropy loss function. The permissible bearing capacity of muddy clay determined by a network model complies with engineering standards in the evaluation of bridge reinforcing performance. As a result, the reinforcing reliability of this form of reinforcement is improved.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121509086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Evaluation model of energy saving potential of green buildings by entropy weight method","authors":"Hong Chai, Yibo Zhang","doi":"10.1680/jsmic.22.00041","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1680/jsmic.22.00041","url":null,"abstract":"To estimate the subjective and objective weights of each index, the entropy weight approach is integrated with AHP in light of the current issues with building energy conservation and sustainable development. The study found that among the four indicators, the proportion of environmental sustainability is 48.19%, which has the most significant impact on the energy-saving potential and sustainable development efficiency of buildings. Among them, the weight value of the environmental load capacity index is 0.1104. On this basis, the cloud model is used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, and a comprehensive model based on four first-class indicators is established. The study found that the evaluation value of this index showed a kind of volatility, with a peak of 1 and a maximum frequency of 0.6. Overall, it displayed “generic” and “good” traits, demonstrating that people did not give enough thought to the environment’s and system’s sustainability while pursuing economic and social sustainability. In conclusion, the evaluation method chosen in this study can solve the fuzziness and randomness better in the efficiency of energy conservation and sustainable development of green buildings. This method has a significant impact on the evaluation of real green buildings.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132998188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traditional manual compliance checking process is error-prone and time-consuming. As a solution, automated compliance checking (ACC) was proposed. Rule capture is a crucial bottleneck of ACC. Despite many studies in this domain, no research has synthesised the themes and identified future research opportunities. This paper aims to fill this gap by conducting a systematic literature review and identifying challenges facing this field. Findings revealed that the rule capture process had gained interest in the past years and more semi-automated and automated methods have been proposed. The current representation development process lacks a methodological backdrop. The existing representations cannot represent “unknowns” and “side-effects”, lack the ability to deal with ambiguous rules and are typically restricted by the rule engine and/or target data model. The understandings of rules, representations, and the relationships between them are insufficient. Further research is required to address these issues.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129959688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Automated progress measurement using computer vision technology - implementation in construction","authors":"Abbas Bozorgzadeh, T. Umar","doi":"10.1680/jsmic.22.00026","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1680/jsmic.22.00026","url":null,"abstract":"A critical concern with the UK’s construction project progress monitoring and control techniques is their dependency on data collection, which is time-consuming and unproductive and may lead to various circumstances in managing projects. However, collecting and accurately analysing information from construction sites requires the development of technologies. As key AI technology, computer vision is a powerful tool for big data analysis which can address the above challenges. This study explores the status of CV-CPM adoption and the main barriers to and incentives for its adoption within UK construction sites. In this respect, after an extensive review of literature covering the AI technology in construction management, the concept, function, and usage of CV and its integration with CPM, including its benefits and drivers, and technical challenges, a questionnaire was administered to UK construction professionals to collect their perceptions. The study’s results indicated that construction practitioners are relatively aware of CV-CPM but lack competencies and skills. CV-CPM has been perceived to be relatively better than the traditional approach. Implications like the cost of implementation, lack of expertise, and resistance to change were the major challenges in CV-CPM adoption. Instead, technological development, decision-making, and competitiveness were classified as incentives for its adoption.","PeriodicalId":371248,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Smart Infrastructure and Construction","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131371867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
