Keeping in mind the spiritual nature of woman’s vocation, that is, to be spiritual wife and spiritual mother, Edith Stein unpacks what it means for women to make a sincere gift of themselves to others in family, professional, and religious life through their personal outlook, active sympathy, intuitive grasp, and emotional perception. She also shows how the feminine genius, rooted in woman’s spousal and maternal nature and vocation, can become perverted when the flesh practices an unrestrained rule over the soul. This unrestrained rule of the flesh over the soul is expressed in the heart’s hatred, anger, envy, etc. To root out these obstacles, obstacles which prevent her from building loving relationships, women need to spiritualize their bodies by cultivating love, peace, gentleness, etc., in their hearts and","PeriodicalId":36983,"journal":{"name":"Studia Gilsoniana","volume":"8 1","pages":"479-494"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69276046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet associating final causality with conscious activity directed toward an end can tempt one to think of teleology as applying only to human acts, with the near-inevitable consequence of denying that non-conscious natural beings have true ends. While in no way suggesting that final causality is not essential to human activity, it is the purpose of the present study to show that teleology for Aristotle is much more extensive, encompassing even the relationship between matter and form. To this end, I draw attention to the following argument in Aristotle’s Physics II, chapter eight:","PeriodicalId":36983,"journal":{"name":"Studia Gilsoniana","volume":"8 1","pages":"147-168"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69276017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article takes Gilson’s contention as a proximate first principle, a starting point. Its major thesis is that Charles Darwin’s failure to understand the complicated nature of the question he was considering in his two famous works (i.e., The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection: Or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Existence and The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex) could likely be responsible for the apparently endless debates that have ensued since his time in Western culture about the question of the origin of species. Many people today claim that these two works are studies in modern “physical science,” “biology,” that prove the evolution of the","PeriodicalId":36983,"journal":{"name":"Studia Gilsoniana","volume":"8 1","pages":"351-399"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69275940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Out of these five, two shelves (about 40%) belong to the pontificate of John Paul II alone. It’s noticeable, therefore, that the Vatican under John Paul II produced—on average—twice as many ecclesiastical teachings per year than it did under any other 20 century pope. When it comes to John Paul II’s teaching on evolution, however, all his statements, scattered in different documents, can be fitted on one page of typescript. This is really not much compared to his voluminous teachings on marriage, family, freedom, economy, interreligious dialogue and various other topics. Despite this fact, today’s Catholic theologians and public speakers willingly refer to John Paul II to present the current state of the Church doctrine regarding the theory of evolution. For example, they typically quote the Address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences delivered by John Paul II in 1996. What is often forgotten, however, is that the Address is quite a low-ranking document","PeriodicalId":36983,"journal":{"name":"Studia Gilsoniana","volume":"8 1","pages":"231-247"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69275729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aquinas used remotion to show how we can understand God from what he is not. There is no reason why Wojtyła should be held to the standard that Ślipko is claiming. The Decalogue contains many “thou shall not” statements which point back to the moral norm. It would be hard to see how someone would be able to make any headway starting from these well-known examples unless we use abstraction in this same sense that Wojtyła and Aquinas have used it in remotion. In fact Ślipko later suggests this himself. Nonetheless, Wojtyła is not looking for the kind of abstraction that Ślipko is advocating. The difference between intellectual virtues and moral virtues is that the intellectual virtues are aimed at the speculative and the moral virtues are aimed at practical matters of action. Hence, the moral virtues are concerned with means as Aristotle notes. The kind of abstraction required has an aim to lay hold of the facts and recognize things for what they are, not describe what they are or to create new categories. This is why conscience is not described as a method for deriving knowledge but referred to by Aquinas as a kind of practical or particular syllogism known as synderesis. As Wojtyła notes, “the theory of morality develops not just as a certain abstraction in relation to the living, and existential reality of human morality . . . it goes straight to the dynamic core of moral facts and 44 See Thomas Aquinas, Summa Contra Gentiles, trans. Anton C. Pegis (New York: Hanover House, 1955–1957), I, 14: “Now, in considering the divine substance, we should especially make use of the method of remotion. For, by its immensity, the divine substance surpasses every form that our intellect reaches. Thus we are unable To apprehend it by knowing what it is. Yet we are able To have some knowledge of it by knowing what it is not.” Available online—see the section References for details. 45 Ślipko, “Concept of Value,” 23. 46 Thomas Aquinas, “On Conscience,” in Thomas Aquinas: Selected Writings, trans. These properties highlight the spiritual aspect of a human being. The first four properties point to the irreducibility of the person to nature, whereas the last three to his irreducibility to society. It is thus possible to say that the person transcends both nature and society. Moreover, the spiritual dimension of man is integrated with his corporeal life as a result of the fact that the human person is constituted of a spiritual soul and a material body.
