In a previous study on yellow catfish (<em>Tachysurus fulvidraco</em>), intersex individuals were produced by administrating 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) or aromatase inhibitor letrozole (LZ). The ovarian and testicular portions of intersexual gonads developed well and were completely separated, arousing our interest in producing self-fertilizable fish and clone-like fish populations. In this study, yellow catfish fry were treated with a combination of MT and LZ at a low dose (5 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> MT, 300 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> LZ) at a low water temperature (27.0 °C, mixed sex-producing temperature, LL group) and a high temperature (33.5 °C, male-producing temperature, HL group), and with a high dose (10 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> MT, 600 mg kg<sup>−1</sup> LZ) at a low water temperature (LH group), during 12–65 days post-hatching, the critical period of sex differentiation. Both XX and XY intersex were produced with different percentages at the same time through co-treatment with MT and LZ, with or without the help of male-producing temperature. The highest percentage of XY intersex (53% in XY, 36% in XX and XY) and XX intersex (47% in XX, 25% in XX and XY) was produced in LH and HL groups, respectively. Results of gonadal morphology, histology, and sperm dynamic analysis indicate that some XX and XY intersex individuals were capable of self-fertilization through artificial insemination. The reproductive performance of these intersex individuals was then investigated by injecting spawning agents, dissecting gonads, and artificially fertilizing eggs with their own sperm. The XX, XY, and YY genotypic individuals were produced by the self-fertilization of XY intersex individuals. The present study successfully produced high percentages of XX and XY intersex and conducted self-fertilization by mating the eggs and sperm of a single intersex individual. Self-fertilization in fish will show great potential in aquaculture genetics and breeding, for example, generating highly homozygous (or ‘‘clonal’’) genetic material, producing mono-sex populations, and identifying unknown sex determination modes. In particular, the cloning method of producing genetic materials will be greatly beneficial for maintaining advantageous traits through self-fertilization generation after generation.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":36894,"journal":{"name":"Aquaculture and Fisheries","volume":"9 2","pages":"Pages 234-244"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2468550X2300134X/pdfft?md5=43f4232705f241bf374bade5b6979888&pid=1-s2.0-S2468550X2300134X-main.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136161028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite recognition of the crucial role that temperature plays in aquaculture, there is currently inadequate research to assess the consequences of extreme temperature fluctuations on fish health. Hence, we set up acute warming (AW) and cooling groups (AC) by increasing or decreasing water temperature by 8 °C and then gradually restoring the initial temperature (22 °C), to investigate the adaptive regulation of energy metabolism, immune function, and gut microbiota in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The fish antioxidant system responded to assist their environmental adaptation: both groups showed activation of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) secretion, and a significant increase in serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) (P < 0.05). Distinct metabolic strategies were employed to cope with sudden environmental perturbations: upon experiencing a temperature decrease (AC1), largemouth bass exhibited a significant increase in serum triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHOL) levels (P < 0.05), coupled with a reduction in blood glucose levels (P < 0.05). However, a considerable reduction in serum TG and CHOL levels was observed after acute warming stage (AW1) (P < 0.05). Following the recovery of temperature, both groups demonstrated a tendency towards normal energy metabolism (CON). Compared to the AW group, the immune function of largemouth bass in the AC group was dramatically affected: alkaline phosphatase (AKP), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alanine transaminase (ALT) increased significantly, while lysozyme (LZM) decreased significantly when the temperature dropped sharply (P < 0.05). After the temperature fluctuations, there were apparent changes in the gut morphology and microbiota of largemouth bass. Microbial functional analysis using the KEGG database revealed apparent alterations in microbial biological functions, especially during the cooling fluctuation (AC). The results indicated that dramatic weather changes, particularly extreme cold, may be detrimental to the health and welfare of largemouth bass.","PeriodicalId":36894,"journal":{"name":"Aquaculture and Fisheries","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different colour filament nettings are often used in gillnets. However, the effect of gillnet colour on catch efficiency is unclear for most fisheries. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effect of gillnet colour on the catch efficiency in pearlspot (Etroplus suratensis) fishery in Vembanad lake, India. Gillnet colours tested were transparent, green and blue. Results showed that in this fishery, the catch efficiency of gillnets of the three colours tested differed significantly. The highest catch efficiency of pearlspot was shown by green gillnets compared to transparent or blue netting. Specifically, green gillnets on average were estimated to be 74% more efficient compared to transparent gillnets. For the green compared to the blue gillnets, the catch efficiency was estimated to be higher by 81%. These results demonstrate that gillnet colour can be an important factor significantly affecting the catch efficiency of this fishing gear.","PeriodicalId":36894,"journal":{"name":"Aquaculture and Fisheries","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135963364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cost-effective and precise measurement of growth traits provides valuable information for growth monitoring, feed management, stocking density, size grading, and health management. However, in aquaculture species, precise measurement of growth traits is challenging. Predictive growth models based on large data sets have the potential to tackle this challenge. Here, we developed predictive growth models for the analysis of growth parameters for the Asian seabass using the dataset from four separate generations (F1-F4), aged between 90- and 768-days post-hatch (dph) in a 20-year selective breeding program. To analyze the length-weight relationship of the fish, the equation W=aLb was used to estimate the parameters a and b. Our results showed that there were high positive correlations between body length and weight in each generation. In addition, to explore the relationships between body weight and ages, for each generation of fish, we fitted two different models: the von Bertalanffy Growth Function (VBGF) and the Gompertz model to analyze the Age-Weight Relationship (AWR). Out of the two, the VBGF, showed a higher goodness of fit. These developed predictive growth models, in combination with digital imaging, will reduce the cost and time for measuring growth traits for breeding programs of Asian seabass, and the effective management of commercial production.","PeriodicalId":36894,"journal":{"name":"Aquaculture and Fisheries","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136009414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A nursery culture was carried out for 40 days, using 2000 shrimp m⁻³. Following treatments were established: 1IA (Ca:Mg:K ratio adjustment to 1:3:1 on day 1); 2IA (Ca:Mg:K ratio adjustment to 1:3:1 on day 1 and day 20); 3IA (Ca:Mg:K ratio adjustment to 1:3:1 on day 1, day 10, and day 20); SW (seawater - salinity of 31 g L−1); and SWD (seawater diluted to a salinity of 2.3 g L−1). Rice bran processed by probiotic microorganisms was used as an organic carbon source. Treatments did not have a significant effect on phytoplankton and zooplankton composition. However, plankton composition was significantly different over the experimental course. A reduced abundance of Cyanophyta was observed compared to traditional aquaculture systems. This can be explained by the probiotic bacteria addition to the system, along with fertilization, which may have limited the growth of this harmful algae. Throughout the experiment, zooplankton community had a dominance by protozoan microorganisms, such as amoebae and ciliates. The presence of copepods and rotifers was also observed throughout the experimental course. This proves that the use of the synbiotic system provides conditions for the microbial loop development, mimicking a natural environment. Different adjustment frequencies in the water Ca:Mg:K ratio do not significantly change plankton composition in P. vannamei intensive nurseries using low salinity water and synbiotic system. Temporal variation in plankton composition probably occurred due to fertilization of the system with an organic carbon source. The use of the synbiotic system proved to be efficient in microbial loop development, providing the growth of a high load of microorganisms that can influence water quality and shrimp growth in low salinity water.","PeriodicalId":36894,"journal":{"name":"Aquaculture and Fisheries","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135848626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
