The principle of the circuit is based on the tristate of a Josephson junction, that is the state of switching in either positive direction or negative direction, in addition to the state of no switching. The JCTL is constructed of two SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference devices), one of which is switched in the positive directions and the other in the negative direction. The JCTL can perform the fundamental operations of AND, OR, and NOT in ternary form and can function as a full adder if the voltage-current characteristics of the two SQUIDs are adjusted appropriately. The advantage of the JCTL is its higher speed of operation with higher density than the conventional Josephson binary logic circuit. The principle of operation is described in detail, and simulation results are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings. For certain classes of abstract logics, several characterizations in terms of De Morgan lattices and projective generation of logics by sets of homomorphisms or by a single epimorphism (a biological morphism) are described. A similar treatment is shown for the three-valued logic generated by the three-element chain together with its two prime filters, and for the incorporation of the falsum connective, which brings out the classes of all De Morgan algebras and all Kleene algebras.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings. It is assumed that the rules describing concepts from a set C are already stored in the (initial) knowledge base. However, these rules might contain superfluous attributes and might refer to concepts not necessarily taught before. To take care of this problem, a heuristic procedure is suggested that transforms rules of the initial knowledge base to a set of rules with terms in DNF. Some disjuncts are dropped and some replaced by other terms. However, the main goal of this procedure is to minimize the number of occurrences of values of attributes and the number of concepts in every rule.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings. It is suggested that since one can now implement neural nets which can actually perform certain basic information processing functions, it is of interest to see if one can fashion nets or systems of nets which can reproduce (i.e. mimic) certain trains of actions regularly performed by humans. The particular issue addressed is that of implementing a multivalued logic system in a neural net, concentrating on one such logic system, namely fuzzy set logic. The focus is on how a network might be used to describe a membership function and how a (multivalued) fuzzy logic system might also be accommodated with such a net.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings. Operators are defined using linguistic terms to avoid any numerical representation. These operators consider linguistic term set ordering, constraints that are the counterpart of properties fulfilled by triangular norms in fuzzy logic, and additional restrictions created by the expert's procedure to combining certainty. The method avoids the usual problems that arise in other treatments of certainty linguistic terms, where they are represented as fuzzy numbers or fuzzy truth labels. One of the most significant problems is the lack of consensus in the representation of each term by a group of experts, due to the necessity of representing the terms in a pseudonumerical scale.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings. This shell contains two inference engines, a rule-oriented editor, a rule compiler, and an explanation module. MILORD can be used to perform three different calculi of uncertainty, on an expert-defined set of linguistic labels, depending on three different models of the conjunction, disjunction, and implication operators. The internal representation of each linguistic label is a possibility distribution on the unit interval. The calculus performed on these labels is not closed in general, and, therefore, it is necessary to close it by means of a linguistic approximation process. This, in turn, allows the conjunction, disjunction, and implication operations to be precomputed for all the pairs of linguistic labels, sorting the results in matrices. Thus, when MILORD is run on a knowledge base, the propagation and combination of uncertainty is performed accessing the precomputed matrices. The examples given correspond to an application to the diagnosis of pneumonias.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":368020,"journal":{"name":"[1988] Proceedings.
