Selection of high quality peers and parallel downloads require a multi-source-hit query paradigm. The existing algorithms for multi-source locations need more message and replica maintenance overheads. According to the resource layout attributes in unstructured P2P systems, in this paper, a Replica Pointer Maintenance (RPM) scheme is proposed. RPM focuses on replica management which improves the query hit rate. Our comprehensive analysis and simulations show that the search performance of unstructured P2P systems can be significantly improved by RPM.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115799466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Routing in WMSNs faces with more challenges than that in traditional sensor networks on account of multiple sink nodes and the mobility of nodes. This paper focuses on two challenging problems. Firstly, we propose a reliable architecture of WMSNs by deploying multiple mobile mesh nodes in each sensor network to collect sensed data, which improves the scalability and performance of WMSNs. Also, we design a routing protocol characteristic to WMSNs. The routing protocol aims at maximizing the lifetime of sensor networks by reducing total energy consumption of a sensor network, as well as balancing energy usage among sensor nodes.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124491685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cooperative communication in wireless sensor networks (WSN) gives us leverage to get the inherent advantages of its random node's locations and the direction of the data flow. Depending on the channel conditions and the transmission distance, the number of cooperative nodes is selected, that participate in an energy efficient transmission/reception. Simulation results show that increasing the cooperative receive diversity, decreases the energy consumption per bit in cooperative communications. It has also been shown that the network backbone capacity can be increased by controlled displacement of antennas at base station at the expense of energy per bit.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128731650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, vertex cutset often exists in such systems due to the lack of centralized management. Vertex cutset is defined as a minimum number set of vertices whose removal increases the number of components. In this paper, we propose a distributed mechanism which efficiently detects the vertex cutset with 1 or 2 vertices and neutralize them into normal nodes with slight overhead. We prove the correctness of this algorithm and evaluate the performance of our design through trace driven simulations. The results show that our algorithm greatly improves the reliability of an overlay network upon the failure of vertex cutset.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121815876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a mechanism, as well as an implemented prototype system, that can be used to support searching and reusing of learning objects formed by a reusability tree in repositories. The underlying repository to store learning objects is constructed based on the architecture defined as CORDRA. We integrate the authoring tool, the LMS, and the repository as a total solution to SCORM-based distance learning. Mobile handset is quite a good research target because of popular use and has restrictions on using general method used on PC computing environment. We propose simple but quite effective algorithm on face detection and face modeling. These algorithms do not degrade the performance of the system and show good results at the experiment. The proposed system use our own OpenGL-ES implementation which shows good performance compared with commercial implementation result for 3D graphics. Based on the good 3D capability, we can implement efficient morphing algorithm and animation effect. Additionally, we can have the ability to change caricature's accessory, background image and put emotional effect, aging effect on generated caricature. Although the result image is not same with drawing image by artist but gets satisfactory feedback from users who used this system.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122254190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we introduce a larger scale distributed disaster information network system based on mobile ad hoc network (MANET) and overlay network. MANET is used for the access network for residents and volunteers around the disaster area and evacuation places. The evacuated residents and volunteers can flexibly communicate with others though MANET using IP based terminals, wireless IP telephones and mobile PCs. On the other hand, overlay network is applied for national wide government and local government network to provide robust and redundant large scale disaster information network. By combining with both MANET access network and overlay network, more robust and flexible, and large scale disaster information network system can be realized provide even some of network lines and nodes are damaged and destroyed when the disaster happened.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128180289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A peer has to obtain service through communicating with acquaintance peers. Here, acquaintance peers may hold obsolete information and may be even malicious. Hence, it is critical for a peer to identify which acquaintance is more trustworthy. In this paper, the trustworthiness of an acquaintance is defined in terms of the satisfiability and ranking factor. We define how satisfiable a requesting peer is for each type of access requests by newly taking into account the authorization. The ranking factor of an acquaintance shows how much the acquaintance is trusted by trustworthy acquaintances. The trustworthiness of each acquaintance is propagated in a peer-by-peer way. We evaluate how the ranking factors of acquaintances are changing in presence of faulty peers.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134557624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unstructured P2P systems, where peers connect with each other to form dynamic, flexible and scalable networks, are commonly used for resource sharing. Resource location in unstructured P2P systems tends to use \"blind search\" strategies (i.e. flooding and random walk) for its simplicity and low maintenance cost. However, due to lack of location information, the performance of \"blind search\" is heavily relied on the network topology. Topology adaptation, by properly adjusting the topology of the P2P overlay network, is a promising approach to improve the search performance. In this paper, we use Relative Search Betweenness (RSB) to estimate nodes' search ability. A RSB-based topology adaptation algorithm (RSB-Topo) is proposed, where peers spontaneously adjust their connections to achieve better performance. Simulation results show that our algorithm could greatly increase search success rate and search coverage, and also decrease response delay to improve the search performance in unstructured P2P networks.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117141465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multicore on-a- chip, in particular DSP systems, can greatly improve performance through parallelism. On the other hand, dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) has been shown to be one of the most effective low power design techniques and multiple supply voltage system is among the most practical and well-studied DVS systems. The integration of multiple cores/processors on a chip naturally makes the system suitable for DVS with new innovations such as voltage island. In this paper, we discuss how to reduce multicore system's power consumption by utilizing multiple supply voltages. We first formulate the power management problem for multicore multi-voltage embedded systems and show that the problem is NP-hard, but the NP- hardness can be removed for several real life applications. More specific, we develop polynomial algorithms to find the optimal solutions for two special cases. The first case is when preemption is allowed, and the second one is when the system uses the first-come - first-serve (FCFS) service strategy. We prove both algorithms' optimality and analyze their run-time complexity. Simulation on real- life and randomly generated tasks show that the optimal preemption scheduler provides significant energy saving. Our goal in this paper is to build a solid foundation for the power management problem on multicore multiple voltage systems and to study real life applications where the problem can be solved optimally.","PeriodicalId":367703,"journal":{"name":"2007 International Conference on Parallel Processing Workshops (ICPPW 2007)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115182719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
