The NIB has been instrumental in supporting translational research locally, nationally and internationally with a number of key achievements to date. The vision of NIB is to develop an internationally recognised biobank network within Northern Ireland which collects, stores and distributes high quality, clinically annotated biospecimens for biomarker research to benefit cancer patients. PSI is a cooperation of all eight Dutch University Medical Centers (UMCs) and aims at building large prospectively collected datasets with uniformly and standardized storage of biomaterials for complex diseases. Currently, PSI covers 18 disease-specific cohorts called ‘Pearls’, and this number is still growing. One of these cohorts is the Stroke or CVA Pearl. For each of the cohorts, PSI offers the UMCs an infrastructure and standard procedures for storing the specific biomaterials in their certified biobanks. Clinical data are stored in a central database after being pseudonymized to ensure patient privacy. For the Parelsnoer Institute-CVA Study, blood for genetic analysis, serum and plasma are collected according to nationally agreed standards. Currently (November 2017) the Stroke Pearl has stored blood samples with prospectively obtained clinical data of around 6000 patients in all UMCs combined. Blood samples and data are available for all researchers with a methodologically valid research proposal. Funding statement: PSI was founded in 2007 with a five year grant from the Dutch Government. From 2011 until now PSI is funded and facilitated by the Netherlands Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU) and its member institutions, independent of external funds. Fully operational since 2015 in a new state-of-the-art biobank facility, Bimetra Biobank acts as a core facility for researchers and third parties looking for high-quality annotated clinical biospecimens. Bimetra Biobank stores about 120.000 clinical samples, both historical collections and prospective collections (disease-based collections, population-based collections and basic research collections) within well-defined and ethically approved research projects. Through a clear governance structure compliant with applicable laws, collections are operationally managed by Bimetra biobank personnel and samples releases are coordinated through collection specific coordinators and advisory boards. From the outset main emphasis was placed on comprehensive automation and seamless integration of sample collection in clinical routine workflows thereby securing highest quality standards. Notably, two population biobanks are also included in this collection. All collections are professionally and sustainably maintained using high-quality and secure standardized protocols for ICT, legal-ethical aspects, sample collection, processing and storage, communication and distribution. The Radboud Biobank includes biomaterial (e.g. DNA, serum, plasma, tissue, urine and faeces – depending on the specific patient group), images, associated clinical data (patient, disease-specific and phenotypic data) and derived information (genotypic data, microarray gene expressions). Patient advocates and other relevant stakeholders are actively involved in the governance of the Radboud Biobank. Funding statement: The Radboud Biobank was implemented by the Radboudumc Executive Board as part of the university research infrastructure. It is a central facility for the Radboudumc, with guaranteed central support for at least 15 years. A governing strategic board, encompassing relevant stakeholder groups, oversees the operations of the Radboud Biobank. Catchpoole","doi":"10.5334/OJB.34","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5334/OJB.34","url":null,"abstract":"The Tumor Bank at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead was established in 1998 with the purpose of facilitating research into childhood malignancy through the active provision of well annotated, ethically collected tissue samples and providing a pathway for the Children Hospital at Westmead to engage in leading research initiatives, supporting international investigations and clinical trials. Within 20 years practice as a single institute biorepository, The Tumour Bank has established standard operating procedures for collection of tissue, blood and bone marrow that were integrated into routine patient management systems. In addition, three main operational areas have been developed: collection of biospecimens and written consent; management of clinical data and biospecimen inventory database; and implementation of an open access policy to support childhood cancer research around the world. Regulatory oversight is provided by the Tumour Bank Committee, Human Research Ethics Committee and Governance Department. This concerted effort has resulted in collecting 20340 specimens from 3788 patients within 20 years, and The Tumour bank has supported over 108 national and international research projects, and contributed to over 70 peer-reviewed publications to date, with a mean time–to-publication of 19.1 ± 9.0 months and average Impact Factor of 6.11 ± 4.53. In conclusion, the Children’s Hospital at Westmead Tumour Bank has demonstrated a sustained single institutional biorepository model for facilitating translational research of rare cancer. Within the biobank are collected, characterized, stored and distributed amniotic fluids (AF) from amniocentesis performed for maternal age. Patients choose to donate to the biobank the first 3 ml of AF that cannot be used for prenatal diagnosis. AF and donor data are anonymously archived in a database, according to the standard ethical principles. Collateral biobanks are present to collect, storage and manage donor sera and DNA samples, to perform microbiological and genetic tests necessary for the unit release. The key output of the Centre is the creation of the UK’s first pan-disease Tissue Directory ( https://directory.biobankinguk.org/ ). Any researcher can search the Directory based on a series of simple key words including disease classification, age, sex, sample type, preservation details, quality indicators and datasets available. The Directory as of April 2017 contains 100 Bioresources. Researchers seeking fresh samples can also search for facilities that offer bespoke collection services. Future work of the Centre will be to explore greater standardisation of biobanking activities across the UK and to facilitate an inter-connected research infrastructure related to the use of human biosamples.
