This study aimed to assess the consumption behavior of people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) concerning sustainability and determine factors that contribute to sustainable food choices.A cross-sectional, web-based study was conducted among adults in the UAE (n = 1,113). Data on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes toward sustainable food choices, and reasons behind sustainable food choices were collected. Independent t-test and one-way ANOVA tests were used to investigate the differences in the level of agreement to nine statements about sustainable food choices among different sociodemographic groups on a scale of 1–5 ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Participants’ responses to open-ended questions were filtered and clustered into eight different categories and presented as counts and percentages.Participants agreed on trying new healthy and environmentally friendly foodstuff (3.57 ± 1.04). Females (p = 0.002) and older adults (>50 years; p = 0.001) showed higher agreement with avoiding red meat. Older participants, and those with higher education (p = 0.020 and p < 0.001, respectively) showed higher agreement with favoring plant-based diets. 21.2% reported avoiding red meat and 23.1% preferred a plant-based diet. Of those who favored plant-based food the main reported reason was ‘health and nutritive value’ (66.5%), while of those who avoided red meat, preference was the most reported reason (41.9%). Although the study sample did not greatly adopt sustainable food choices, they leaned toward trying environmentally friendly foods. Females, older adults, and highly educated people aligned themselves with more sustainable food choices. {"title":"Potential land-use function conflicts of cultivated land for urban sustainable development: a case study in Yancheng City, China","authors":"Nanyan Zhu, Quan Ma, Jingwen Ai, Zhen Zeng, Chunhua Zhou","doi":"10.3389/fsufs.2023.1274980","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3389/fsufs.2023.1274980","url":null,"abstract":"The evaluation on the trade-off/synergy relationship of urban cultivated land-use function conflicts (CLUFCs) for improving the sustainability of cultivated land ecosystem is one of the solutions to coordinate the contradiction between land health and economic development and alleviate food crises, and achieve “zero hunger” in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).In this study, Yancheng City was taken as the research object, and the cultivated land ecological function (CLEF) was evaluated by the morphological spatial pattern analysis-minimum cumulative resistance (MSPA-MCR) model from the perspective of multi-objective coordinated development of cultivated land, and cultivated land productive function (CLPF) was evaluated by net primary productivity (NPP). In addition, combined with local indications of spatial association (LISA) analysis, the spatial trade-off/synergy relationship between CLPF and CLEF was quantified and analyzed. The spatial principal co-coordinates-redundancy analysis (SPCoA-RDA) was used to explore the influencing factors and mechanisms of CLUFCs.The results show that there are obvious spatial heterogeneity and aggregation distribution characteristics of CLUFCs in Yancheng City. Through SPCoA-RDA, it is found that the spatial differentiation of CLUFCs is the result of the combination of internal (population density, road network, and water network) and external (spatial spillover effect) driving factors.Based on these results, the study area was divided into eight types of cultivated land suitability zones under four aggregation relationships of CLUFCs. Comprehensively considering production, CLUFCs were evaluated by socio-economic and geo-spatial statistical dates, and strategies for guiding the coordinated development and sustainable management of urban cultivated land had been put forward. As well as highlighting the promising developments in the algae food industry in Europe. By 2027, it is expected that the algae protein market will be worth approximately USD 300 million.We conducted thematic analysis and synthesis of scientific literature and conceptual documents at the European level.The studies reviewed show that the nutritional value of food products can be increased by using algae. The production of algae for food should be encouraged in Europe because it is a viable alternative protein source. To fully utilize algae as a source of protein, however, a number of technological, regulatory, and market-related obstacles must be resolved despite the indicative advantages. Developing cost-effective and efficient methods for algae cultivation, harvesting, and processing are also necessary. Uniform and consistent regulations are needed to guarantee the safety and quality of products that contain algae, as well as consumer awareness campaigns and education about the advantages of algae protein.In addition to providing evidence of the viability of algae production as a source of food, this study demonstrates that algae land needs are negligible compared to other protein sources—animal-based like pork, chicken and beef production but also plant-based alternatives such as nuts, pulses, grains and peas. The conversion of agroecosystems requires the adoption of agroecological techniques, which aim to design the agroecosystem as an integrated part of a vegetation matrix of the landscape, interconnecting the different production systems with the agricultural landscape. In order to measure the degree of connectivity of agroecosystems with the landscape, we used the Main Agroecological Structure (MAS) method, which was applied to 36 small agroecosystems of vegetable, livestock and fruit producers, which generally presented a low degree of connectivity. This allows us to evaluate the potential of these systems for agroecological transition, since being present in a moderately complex agricultural landscape gives important advantages over a more simplified system, allowing these producers to dispense with the use of many energy subsidies. This evaluation allows a first approximation to the quantification of the landscape matrix and will allow a comparison between agroecosystems or an evaluation of the evolution of the MAS over time. China, a nation with a sizable population, has drawn immense research attention over the following question: How can China promote agricultural transformation and achieve high-quality agricultural development through technological innovation? Based on the panel data that considers 28 provincial-level administrative regions in mainland China from 2010 to 2018, the study utilizes two-way fixed models; thus, it tests the impact of domestic agricultural research and development on high-quality agricultural development. Furthermore, it utilizes the moderating effect to verify the relationship between the two aforementioned factors under the influence of foreign technology introduction, human capital, and financial support. We observed the following: First, the high-quality agricultural development that characterized all the Chinese regions exhibited a steady upward trend. The industrial system, ecological system, and management system exhibited considerable development, whereas the development of the production system was lagging. Second, domestic agricultural research and development has promoted high-quality agricultural development. Third, under the moderating effect of foreign technology introduction, human capital, and financial support, the promotion effect of domestic agricultural research and development on high-quality agricultural development has gradually weakened. However, studies focused on organic food consumption reveal a strikingly low conversion rate of this interest into actual purchasing behavior, particularly in the context of China. It is, therefore, crucial to implement effective strategies to bridge this gap, thereby fostering the growth of China's organic food sector.This research introduces the theory of perceived values and innovation resistance into the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) theoretical model, exploring the interrelationships among various facets of food safety concerns, perceived values, perceived risks, and organic purchasing behavior. Furthermore, the moderating influence of trust in these relationships is taken into account. Employing structural equation modeling, data from 352 organic food consumers in China's premier cities were analyzed.Findings substantiated the significant interplay between perceived values and risks with food safety concerns. It was also observed that perceived values had a positive and significant impact on purchasing behavior, while perceived risks exerted a negative and significant influence. Importantly, the relationship between nutritional value and risk barrier with purchase behavior was found to be moderated by the level of trust.
