In this context, assessing the potential of sugarcane cropping systems should be a priority, as it leaves substantial amounts of recyclable residues essential for maintaining soil organic carbon (SOC), improving soil health, and strengthening overall resources. We evaluated the impacts of residue retention and nutrient management practices on SOC and its pools, storage, soil biology, and yield in a multi-ratooning sugarcane system. A field experiment was conducted in the split-plot design with residue burning (RB) and residue retention (RR) as the main plot treatments and three nutrient management practices, that is, 25% of the recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF, i.e., 300:150:150 kg of N, P2O5, and K2O kg ha−1, respectively) as basal + 75% through fertigation (N1); 50% of RDF as basal + 50% through fertigation (N2); and 75% of RDF as basal + 25% through fertigation (N3) as subplot treatments in ratoon sugarcane. Soil samples were collected initially and after 6 years of multi-ratooning (one plant and four ratoon crops) from a soil depth of 0–30 cm. The results indicated that RR plots had 21% higher total SOC with 42, 47, 17, and 13% higher very labile, labile, less labile, and non-labile C pools, respectively, than RB plots (P < 0.05). RR also had a higher lability and recalcitrant index than RB. Of the total SOC stock, the contribution of passive pools was higher (72–75%) than active pools. Significantly higher dehydrogenase activity (DHA) (86%), alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) (16%), and ß-glucosidase activity (BGA) (22%) were observed in RR plots as compared to RB plots, whereas for nutrient management practices, it followed the order of N2 > N3> N1. Microbial counts also followed the same trend as that of enzyme activities. Residue retention practices reported higher C sequestration (0.68 Mg C ha−1 yr−1), carbon retention efficiency (37%), and yield (38%) with a potential to reduce GHG emissions by 2.72 Mg CO2 ha−1 yr−1 as compared to traditional practices. Social factors such as gender, wealth, age and education levels generate differentiated abilities and capacities to cope with climate shocks. In this study we draw upon 48 sex disaggregated focus group discussions with youth to understand young people’s engagement in the livestock sector and their livestock adaptation strategies. We first explore whether gender and locational differences exist in young women’s and men’s engagement in the livestock sector, specifically which livestock species young women and men rear. Next, we describe young women’s and men’s livestock adaptation strategies in mixed crop and livestock and agropastoral systems. Lastly, we share insights about relationships that shape young women’s and men’s engagement in livestock during their transitions to adulthood. Youth rear certain species more than others, such as chickens and dairy cows. Livestock adaptation practices are generally low. Gendered practices during transitions to adulthood differ for young women and men and household relationships mediate young women’s and men’s livestock production engagement. Intergenerational transfers are gendered, however, are changing in all locations. Women’s opportunities to inherit or acquire land, for instance, have expanded. Transitions into new households, however, often reinforce gendered access to resources and women’s labor. However, the highly unregulated land markets expose these farmers to wide-ranging vulnerabilities. In this study, we investigated the land access mechanisms and the related constraints among the small-scale farmers in the densely populated Eastern part of The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We randomly selected 240 consenting farmers for inclusion in the study and collected data using semi-structured interviews to obtain data on land access characteristics. Then, the data was subjected to descriptive statistics to obtain measures of central tendency and dispersion on the responses and correlation statistics to understand the patterns and relations of factors affecting the land access and strategies used to cope with the limited land situation in the South Kivu province of DRC. Our results showed an insecure land tenure system among smallholder farmers. Most of the farmers in the study purchased and leased land to cope with poor land access and, in so doing, faced high price-related limitations that were unsustainable to these farmers; they also faced highly restrictive leasehold contracts. Given the limited access to financial resources and support, improving regulations of land markets and resource support interventions could promote land access among these smallholder farmers. We conclude that the challenges of land access and the current methods farmers use to obtain additional land among the smallholder farming households in the south Kivu province of DRC are precarious and unsustainable and continue to pose a food insecurity and poverty risk among these farmers. This study aimed to assess the consumption behavior of people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) concerning sustainability and determine factors that contribute to sustainable food choices.A cross-sectional, web-based study was conducted among adults in the UAE (n = 1,113). Data on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes toward sustainable food choices, and reasons behind sustainable food choices were collected. Independent t-test and one-way ANOVA tests were used to investigate the differences in the level of agreement to nine statements about sustainable food choices among different sociodemographic groups on a scale of 1–5 ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Participants’ responses to open-ended questions were filtered and clustered into eight different categories and presented as counts and percentages.Participants agreed on trying new healthy and environmentally friendly foodstuff (3.57 ± 1.04). Females (p = 0.002) and older adults (>50 years; p = 0.001) showed higher agreement with avoiding red meat. Older participants, and those with higher education (p = 0.020 and p < 0.001, respectively) showed higher agreement with favoring plant-based diets. 21.2% reported avoiding red meat and 23.1% preferred a plant-based diet. Of those who favored plant-based food the main reported reason was ‘health and nutritive value’ (66.5%), while of those who avoided red meat, preference was the most reported reason (41.9%). Although the study sample did not greatly adopt sustainable food choices, they leaned toward trying environmentally friendly foods. Females, older adults, and highly educated people aligned themselves with more sustainable food choices. In addition, combined with local indications of spatial association (LISA) analysis, the spatial trade-off/synergy relationship between CLPF and CLEF was quantified and analyzed. The spatial principal co-coordinates-redundancy analysis (SPCoA-RDA) was used to explore the influencing factors and mechanisms of CLUFCs.The results show that there are obvious spatial heterogeneity and aggregation distribution characteristics of CLUFCs in Yancheng City. Through SPCoA-RDA, it is found that the spatial differentiation of CLUFCs is the result of the combination of internal (population density, road network, and water network) and external (spatial spillover effect) driving factors.Based on these results, the study area was divided into eight types of cultivated land suitability zones under four aggregation relationships of CLUFCs. Comprehensively considering production, CLUFCs were evaluated by socio-economic and geo-spatial statistical dates, and strategies for guiding the coordinated development and sustainable management of urban cultivated land had been put forward. As well as highlighting the promising developments in the algae food industry in Europe. By 2027, it is expected that the algae protein market will be worth approximately USD 300 million.We conducted thematic analysis and synthesis of scientific literature and conceptual documents at the European level.The studies reviewed show that the nutritional value of food products can be increased by using algae. The production of algae for food should be encouraged in Europe because it is a viable alternative protein source. To fully utilize algae as a source of protein, however, a number of technological, regulatory, and market-related obstacles must be resolved despite the indicative advantages. Developing cost-effective and efficient methods for algae cultivation, harvesting, and processing are also necessary. Uniform and consistent regulations are needed to guarantee the safety and quality of products that contain algae, as well as consumer awareness campaigns and education about the advantages of algae protein.In addition to providing evidence of the viability of algae production as a source of food, this study demonstrates that algae land needs are negligible compared to other protein sources—animal-based like pork, chicken and beef production but also plant-based alternatives such as nuts, pulses, grains and peas.
