Este trabajo analiza las implicaciones hermenéuticas de la polémica de los llamados Papeles de Salamanca (2005-2007), en la que el Ayuntamiento de Salamanca y la Junta de Castilla y León emplearon las palabras de Unamuno para oponerse a las reclamaciones de la Generalitat catalana sobre una parte de los fondos del Archivo de la Guerra Civil, lo cual implicaba recurrir a la memoria histórica y a la autoridad simbólica de un escritor clásico para articular una determinada interpretación de la identidad nacional.Abstract:The phrase \"you will win but you will not convince,\" attributed to Miguel de Unamuno and prominently featured in Alejandro Amenábar's film Mientras dure la guerra (as well as in other recent films, plays, historical essays, and press polemics), has become a recurrent quote used by Spanish politicians of various ideologies. This paper analyzes the hermeneutical implications of the controversy over the so-called Salamanca Papers (2005-2007), in which the municipality of Salamanca and the regional government of Castilla and León employed Unamuno's quote as a slogan to oppose the Catalan government's claims over documents kept in the Spanish Civil War Archive, effectively resorting to Spain's historical memory and the symbolic authority of a classic literary figure in order to reinforce a particular interpretation of Spain's national identity.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128587102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Martínez","doi":"10.1353/hcs.2021.0023","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/hcs.2021.0023","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:This essay adopts an urban cultural studies method in order to examine the evolvincultural sensibilities of Transition-era Spain by way of a close reading of Rosa Montero's 1979 Crónica del desamor. In this theoretical context, it is first argued that Montero deploys a defetishizing lens to disclose the underlying social relations that are congealed within the materiality of the commodity. This thematic analysis of the first section then gives way in the second movement to a critical examination of the relationship between the novel's form and the historical context. More specifically, the second section contends that the author's repeated use of analepsis is a concrete manifestation of the period's dominant temporal coordinate, or the continuity/change dynamic that characterizes Spain's transition to democracy. It is ultimately suggested that the defetishized representation of the commodity form in the author's first novel captures what is called throughout the essay the other side of modernity, or the alienation and frustration that is an unfortunate byproduct of consumer culture.Resumen:Este ensayo adopta una metodología de los estudios culturales urbanos para examinar las sensibilidades culturales en desarrollo de la sociedad española durante la época de la transición a través de una lectura crítica de Crónica del Desamor de Rosa Montero (1979). Dentro de este contexto teórico, se arguye que Montero utiliza una lente desfetichizante para revelar las desequilibradas relaciones sociales subyacentes que se han solidificado dentro de la materialidad de la mercancía. Este análisis temático de la primera sección da paso en el segundo movimiento a una examinación crítica de la relación entre la forma novelística y el contexto histórico. Más específicamente, la segunda sección sostiene que el uso recurrente de la analepsis se constituye una manifestación concreta de la coordenada temporal dominante del periodo, o la dinámica cambio/continuidad que caracteriza la transición hacia la democracia en España. Finalmente, se sugiere que la representación desfetichizante de la mercancía en la primera novela de la autora captura lo que se llama a lo largo de este ensayo la otra cara de la modernidad, o la alienación y frustración que son el desafortunado resultado de la cultura consumista.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121403734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este olea europea, robusto y monumental, destacado por ser cultivo representativo en la agricultura española, protagoniza este filme en el que confluyen distintos motivos de denuncia identitaria y ecológica. Este estudio analiza el olivo como metáfora del desenraizamiento identitario, rural y cultural que conforman la identidad del individuo. Se examina la indignación ante la falta de conciencia medioambiental y la abusiva expoliación de olivos milenarios, convertida en un negocio lucrativo, donde los árboles se arrancan de su habitat natural y se venden como objetos decorativos para embellecer paisajes urbanísticos. Asimismo, se indaga la urgencia de proteger este patrimonio que carece de apoyo legal, y por último, iniciativas emergentes que abogan por su defensa.Abstract:The olive tree (2016), directed by the film director, Icíar Bollaín, narrates the struggle for Alma in recovering the millenary olive tree from her grandfather Ramón, that was sold to a German energy multinational to represent the company's logo. The olea europea, a robust and monumental tree, known for representing Spanish agriculture, stars in this film where various identity and environmental protests converge. This study analyzes the millenary tree as a metaphor of rural and cultural uprooting that construct an identity. I investigate the alienation from nature, the lack of environmental awareness, and the need to condemn the abusive expolio of millenary trees that has become a lucrative business, where trees are uprooted and sold as decorative objects to merely embellish urban and private landscapes. Likewise, I examine the need for protecting this environmental heritage that lacks legal support, and also initiatives that advocate for its defense.","PeriodicalId":366492,"journal":{"name":"Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128339638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, in the context of the transformations initiated by Towns in Transition, an alter-globalization movement that attempts to restructure local economy, society and agriculture to counteract the destructive processes imposed by the logics of capitalism. Second, our essay considers Carrícola in the context of eco-cinematic concepts and practices. As an ecocinematic work, Carrícola works as a tool for social transformation and a vehicle for a more democratic and more ecologically responsible society. To analyze Carrícola's ecosocial project and the documentary Carrícola in the double context of the Transition movements and of ecocinema, respectively, helps us to understand the various dimensions of those transformative processes, appreciate their achievements and possibilities, and critically highlight their conflicts and shortcomings.
