Writers who wrote in Arabic had no reliable information about Roman architectural inheritance and tried to compensate for this fact by using other sources, such as prejudices, myths, legends and fantasies. Works of the descriptive genre (al-masãlik wa-l-mamãlik) demonstrate this tendency most clearly. The books written by the Arab Hispanic author al-Idrīsī (12th century) and the Persian writer al-Ḥimyarī (15th century) belong to this genre. Al-Ḥimyarī had never been to Spain (al-Andalus) but was very interested in this country and left a very detailed description of it. Both writers reflected the image of Merida in their works. This city had great importance in Roman and Visigothic times. Strange interpretations of the functions of some Roman buildings in Merida (theater, amphitheater, aqueduct, forum, triumphal arches and others) found in the work of al-Ḥimyarī were frequently taken from al-Idrīsī. The fantastic interpretation of the origin of the name of Merida (“residence of an honorable or noble man”: mashkīn ashsharīf) suggested by al-Ḥimyarī had the same source. At the same time, much better grounded information included in the work of alRāzī (written in the 10th century) was disregarded. The main cause of these incorrect interpretations was a lack of knowledge of Roman municipal life in the case of Arabic writers.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136003293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this vision of the history of the Louvre does not emerge until the 19th century, although the narrative of its unfinishedness has existed for much longer. This article analyses the origins and transformation of this narrative throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Despite the linguistic continuity associated with the stability of the very expression achever le Louvre (to finish the Louvre), the meaning that was invested in the idea of completion underwent significant changes. Originating in the context of the establishment and glorification of Louis XIV’s strong royal rule, the narrative was subsequently borrowed by critics of his great-grandson Louis XV’s reign and played a significant role in establishing the royal palace as a national treasure. By the 1760-s, in public discussions about the Louvre its completion becomes an allegory of a process of civilisation carried out in the name of the national interest. The changes that took place contributed greatly to the subsequent interpretation of the history of the Louvre and facilitated an ambitious project to merge it with the Tuileries Palace.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136003074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on the literary sources of the plot frame (such as The Tale of the Babylonian Kingdom, The Parable of the City of Babylon, the Legend of Leo the Philosopher by Archbishop Anthony) and their origin; analyses the description of the hero’s adventures on his way back home and their genesis; discusses how this source material was assembled into a stable composition of an adventure tale. The conducted research leads us to the conclusion that The Tale of the Babylonian Kingdom is a Russian reworking of a Byzantine oral legend which over time absorbed a number of ‘wandering’ literary subplots. Their montage (unlikely to happen in the oral tradition) was probably modeled on the compositional patterns typical for books about the misadventures of returning heroes. Stories circulating in the tradition, which corresponded to a similar theme, provided the necessary materials. Thus, a long adventure story was created and later adapted by oral tradition. Analysis of its folkloric versions points to the previous existence of manuscript texts now lost, but their content can be partially restored from the available oral archives. Moreover, certain correspondences between the Russian adventure tale and the ones that come from geographically, historically and culturally distant parts (Latin, Arabic, Chinese), show that in the past there were some ‘intermediate links’ which connected them. Consequently, it is possible to hypothesize the existence of rich currents of manuscript texts, remotely connecting the whole ‘reader space’ of Eurasia and North Africa.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136259242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is based on political instructions of the prelate of Reims, such as “De regis persona et regio ministerio” and “De ordine palatii”, as well as the letters of the archbishop and his compilation of the Annals of St Bertin. Analysis of Hincmar’s texts shows that royal power was based on harmony between the king, the nobility, and the clergy. Drawing attention to contemporary events, the prelate of Reims criticizes both representatives of the nobility in the Kingdom of the West Franks, and the kings who indulge them. In Hincmar’s opinion, the only way for a king to rule virtuously and rightfully is to rely on the advice of just and wise counselors. The virtues of the royal inner circle are the same as the virtues of the king: justice, mercy, wisdom, piety, humility. The Reims prelate envisions a bishop as the ideal royal advisor. Moreover, since the priest is responsible to the Lord for the king’s deeds, he must strictly observe the fulfilment of king’s duties. In this regard, Hincmar constructs the office of an apocrisiarius-archcapellan, an envoy from the Frankish episcopate, who would supervise all church affairs at court and guide the king’s ethics as well.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135955710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His Vita, rich with tales about his miracles, arose within the framework of medieval Armenian literature. One of the most striking episodes of his Life is the legend which tells that one day during self-forgetful prayer, in a vision Narekatsi saw the Mother of God holding the Christ Child in her arms. As confirmation of the historical veracity of Narekatsi’s vision lines from his works are cited in the Vita. This episode from the Life was widely disseminated by means of oral retelling and was also presented as a separate wonder narrative. At the same time, among the images related to Narekatsi, his vision has also been illustrated more than any other, both in Armenian manuscripts and in the engravings in early printed books. The article traces the gradual development of this iconographic form, from the marginal and page miniatures of the manuscripts to the engravings of the two printed commentaries (1745, 1801) dedicated to the “Book of Lamentations”.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136259625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The works of contemporary artists (Ivan Simonov, Timofey Radya, Vladimir Abikh, Vladimir Logutov, Semyon Motolyants, Mayana Nasybullova), whose creative practices give the text, phrases, words, statements a lead role, are analyzed here. The works of these artists have not yet been studied in detail by art historians, art critics, and culturologists, but nowadays their creations are widely featured at Russian and foreign exhibition halls, auctions, museums and private collections. The article pays special attention to the various art forms and medias — from painting to installation, from photography to street art and performance. It considers various types of connections between the word, its image, object and semantic meanings, and analyzes the dialogues between the verbal and the visual in the Russian contemporary art. Contemporary artists often work with narratology and visual language, subtle linguistic and pictorial categories. The semantic content of many artworks is multilayer and polysyllabic. The author comes to the conclusion that verbal-visual art is an established trend on the Russian art scene, closely related to the Moscow conceptual circle (Ilya Kabakov, Victor Pivovarov, Eric Bulatov, Andrey Monastyrski, Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid).","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136259098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Korolenko has not yet been compiled in its entirety. Literary texts of various orientations, correspondence with various persons, and articles that were published in the provincial periodical press have not been taken into account or introduced into scholarly circulation. This publication presents two articles by Korolenko from 1904 which have been overlooked by scholars: an obituary, “Theodor Herzl (To the half-year anniversary of his death)”, and a book review of K. A. Skalkovsky “Materials for a Physiology of Russian Society. \"A Little Chrestomathy for Adults\"”. These articles are extremely important for understanding both Korolenko’s work and the literary and social circumstances in Russia and in general in Europe during the local conflicts (in the South African republics, the Boxer Rebellion in China, the Russo-Japanese War) and the First World War. At this time, the “national-patriotic” issue was becoming more relevant, as the major international interview published in early 1904 by the French weekly La Revue amply demonstrates. 41 politicians and cultural figures took part in this interview, including A. France, O. Mirbeau, A. de Gubernatis, K. Kautsky, F. Kossuth, C. Lombroso, M. Maeterlinck, N. K. Mikhailovsky, T. Mommsen, M. Nordau. These two forgotten articles by Korolenko show us one of the most important directions in the ideological struggle between the writer and the journal Russkoe bogatstvo in 1904. According to other print sources, this direction is not so obvious, which is why these articles, introduced into scholarly circulation, acquire particular significance.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136260020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particular emphasis is placed on 1860s–1880s fashion satire, since these visual and textual sources can yield useful insights into the cross-pollination between scientific knowledge and the popular culture of the era. The juxtaposition of a statue of Venus and a fashionable lady of the day, ubiquitous in mid-Victorian journalism and caricature, lurks across the pages of several of Darwin’s works, where it takes on a completely different meaning. While fashion satire presented Venus as a timeless ideal, which at the same time was seen as an epitome of “natural” beauty, Darwin questioned the very possibility of such an ideal. Rather than concentrated in a fixed set of bodily forms and proportions, he saw beauty in nature and in human societies as perpetually fluid and infinitely variable, as if following the logic of fashion, which many of his contemporaries blamed for corrupting classical aesthetics. Indeed, in The Descent of Man Darwin directly attacks Venus de’Medici, pointing to the limitations of this image of perfection and proposing a radical non-human aesthetics instead.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136003062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Critical assessment of the identification of oeconyms from these texts in different languages and from different times requires us to reject the historiographical inertia of perceiving urban history of the 10th century through the prism of the narrative of “The Primary Chronicle” from the beginning of the 12th century. If we don’t resort to the artificial etymological fitting of oikonyms from different traditions, then out of 25 Old Russian annalistic names of cities 2 or 3 names are reflected in two treaties from 911 and the 930s — first half of 940s, 1 name is reflected in an Arabic text from the 920–950s, 4 or 5 — in a Greek text from the 950s, 4 — in earlier Scandinavian texts, and 5 — in later texts. At least 10 oikonyms from the Arabic, Greek and Scandinavian writing traditions are not known to the earliest Russian Chronicles. A comparison of lists of oikonyms from different traditions allows us to suggest that they reflected three phases of the process of urbanization of Eastern Europe: the first — the appearance of Scandinavian emporia in the 9th — first half of the 10th century; the second — crystallization of the core of the Rurikid polity around Kyiv in the first half of the 10th century; the third — the final expansion of the Rurikids at the end of the 10th — middle of the 11th century. It was during the last stage when a “map” of Rus’ cities was formed that is reflected in “The Primary Chronicle” from the beginning of the 12th century, therefore it would be unjustified methodologically to project this late “map” onto earlier periods.","PeriodicalId":36644,"journal":{"name":"Shagi/ Steps","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136003959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
