The proposed approach includes two major parts: (1) a discrete-time non-linear stochastic model which denotes the time-varying relationships of lane traffic state variables and control variables under conditions of lane-blocking incidents, and (2) a real-time control algorithm for dynamically predicting control variables. To generate efficiently traffic data used in model tests, we employed the Paramics microscopic traffic simulator, which is developed to model and analyze ITS traffic flow conditions. The preliminary test results indicate the superiority of the proposed real-time signal control method in comparison with fixed-time signal control modes which are presently used at the study site. It is expected that this study can stimulate research on incident management, and extend to network-wide incident responsive traffic control for the development of advanced traffic management systems (ATMS).","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. We describe a system of \"virtual\" probe sensors that measure transit vehicle speeds using automatic vehicle location system (AVL) tracking data. Examples showing the correlation between probe data and inductance loop spend trap data are presented. In addition, virtual sensor data, produced using transit vehicles as probes, is compared with inductance loop speeds during incidents identified in the DOT incident log. The presentation is an extension to the authors' previous work on ORP problems where travel times are considered as travel costs. Routing problems are at the heart of dynamic traffic assignment models, and are also fundamental network optimization problems for a wide variety of transportation and telecommunication applications. The problems to be studied can be viewed as counterparts of the minimum cost path problems in deterministic networks. A stochastic time-dependent network is a network where link travel times and link travel costs are random variables with time-dependent distributions. A routing policy is defined as a decision rule that specifies what node to take next at each decision node based on the realized link travel times, link travel costs and the current time. We extend the framework for minimum expected travel time routing policy problems to minimum expected travel cost problems. This framework includes a general description of a stochastic time-dependent network, a decision process, a minimization problem, and a generic optimality condition for the minimization problem. One of the reasons is the depreciation of physical capability of elderly people. In this research, the driver's behavior is measured by the driving simulator which has the sensors attached to the steering, accelerator and brake. Moreover, we measure the fundamental characteristics related to the cognition, judgment and movement of a driver. The analytical form of the link choice proportions is developed. By minimizing the squared errors between estimated and observed link flows, the mathematical model balances all degrees of approximation for restricted equations. The recursive least squares method is conducted to evaluate OD matrices based on the estimation theory. The conducted method is more receptive to fluctuations in the observation due to integrating stochastic disturbances including the measurement errors and temporal variations of the observed link flows, and can make better use of traffic information from observation systems. The analysis and simulation study show that the method is feasible. Factors influencing the computed results of OD matrices are discussed and directions for future researches are proposed.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Toll-lanes are projected with the purpose to offer a congestion-free lane for drivers who are willing to pay for the use of such a facility and a high level of service. A simulation study has been performed in order to assess the impacts of advanced driver support systems on the longitudinal and lateral performance near a motorway segment with a toll-lane situated in the median lane and traffic merging to an off-ramp. The conducted simulations varied in the level of toll-lane use, merging proportion, and system penetration in the vehicle fleet. Results from the simulations show the performance benefits of centralized distance control (CDC) for vehicles entering the merging zone. Negative Impacts on throughput were found with the application of an intelligent speed adopter (ISA) with a speed limit of 90 km/h in the merging zone. The combination of the two systems showed small improvements compared with the do-nothing case. The findings show that the application of toll-lanes in combination with advanced driver support systems odd some additional longitudinal and lateral capacity to the main roadway.","PeriodicalId":365722,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This paper starts with the description of some services to motivate Ad-hoc networking in the vehicular environment. It then gives an overview of the current challenges (especially routing protocols) in this field. If the geographic position of the network nodes is known, better performance can be achieved with the utilization of so called geocast routing-algorithms. An overview of geocast-routing is given and shortcomings of the existing protocols for the usage in inter-vehicle Ad-hoc networks are explained. In order to realize intelligent dispatching, the dispatcher must determine the headway and dispatching form for a certain transit vehicle. As we know, the headway is relatively stable for some certain time period since the passenger flow changes according to regularity. However, the dispatching form must be determined according to the real time passenger flow. This paper proposes that the principle of automatic creating of a transit vehicle's dispatching form for the first time. Then, a new automatic creating method based on BP (backpropagation) neural network is introduced, which can make sure that the dispatching form can be created in a short time.
