The cognitive control loops determines urgency of network alarms, processes urgent alarms more quickly, and then infers root causes of the problems based on learning and reasoning. We show that we reduce a number of alarms by correlation and detect alarm priorities using an ontology model based on the policy.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117028785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After a node failure, our system avoids delays in processing due to detecting the failure or transferring control to a back-up node. We achieve this by using multiple primary nodes which process transactions concurrently as peers. If a primary node fails, the remaining primaries continue executing without being delayed at all by the failed primary. Nodes agree on a total ordering for processing requests with a novel low overhead wait-free algorithm that utilizes a small amount of shared memory accessible to the nodes and a simple compare-and-swap like protocol which allows the system to progress at the speed of the fastest node. We have implemented our system and show experimentally that it performs well and can transparently handle node failures without causing delays to transaction processing. The efficient implementation of our algorithm for ordering transactions is a critically important factor in achieving good performance.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125784298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monitoring DNS traffic can reveal essential network and system level activity profiles. Worm infected and botnet participating hosts can be identified and malicious backdoor communications can be detected. Any passive DNS monitoring solution needs to address several challenges that range from architectural approaches for dealing with large volumes of data up to specific Data Mining approaches for this purpose. We describe a framework that leverages state of the art distributed processing facilities with clustering techniques in order to detect anomalies in both online and offline DNS traffic. This framework entitled DNSSM is implemented and operational on several networks. We validate the framework against two large trace sets.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124846819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the major beneficiaries of the virtualization technology is the cloud computing technology. Because of the flexibility of virtualization, the cloud computing services can serve various needs of its customers more efficiently. This paper is related to an efficient management of cloud computing technology, in particular an efficient provisioning management system. We propose a graph clustering based provisioning algorithm and show its benefits over traditional provisioning algorithms based on the minimum cut from graph theory. Netpherd tries to enable the peers to communicate with the peers of the local domain by manipulating network performance (i.e., adding an artificial delay to the inter-domain traffic) at network device like router. Simulation results show that Netpherd can increases (decreases) the intra-domain (inter-domain) traffic by affecting the peer selection adaptation. Netpherd also improves the content download performance.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128723101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we focus on horizontal elasticity, the ability of the infrastructure to add or remove virtual machines allocated to a service deployed in the cloud. We model a cloud service using queuing theory. Using that model we build two adaptive proactive controllers that estimate the future load on a service. We explore the different possible scenarios for deploying a proactive elasticity controller coupled with a reactive elasticity controller in the cloud. Using simulation with workload traces from the FIFA world-cup web servers, we show that a hybrid controller that incorporates a reactive controller for scale up coupled with our proactive controllers for scale down decisions reduces SLA violations by a factor of 2 to 10 compared to a regression based controller or a completely reactive controller.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127431670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, existing Internet-based content delivery approaches have several disadvantages, such as the lack of Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Future Internet research has presented several promising ideas to solve the issues related to the current Internet, such as federations across network domains and end-to-end QoS reservations. This paper presents an architecture for the delivery of multimedia content across the Internet, based on these novel principles. It facilitates the collaboration between the stakeholders involved in the content delivery process, allowing them to set up loosely-coupled federations. More specifically, the Federated Resource Reservation (FedRR) algorithm is proposed. It identifies suitable federation partners, selects end-to-end paths between content providers and their customers, and optimally configures intermediary network and infrastructure resources in order to satisfy the requested QoS requirements and minimize delivery costs.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127321407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically a tenant will use Cloud service interfaces to acquire or release resources directly. This process can be automated by a CSP by providing auto-scaling capability where a tenant sets policies indicating under what condition resources should be auto-scaled. This is specially needed in a Cloud environment because of the huge scale at which a Cloud operates. Typical solutions are naïve causing spurious auto-scaling decisions. For example, they are based on only thresholding triggers and the thresholding mechanisms themselves are not Cloud-ready. In a Cloud, resources from three separate domains, compute, storage and network, are acquired or released on-demand. But in typical solutions resources from these three domains are not auto-scaled in an integrated fashion. Integrated auto-scaling prevents further spurious scaling and reduces the number of auto-scaling systems to be supported in a Cloud management system. In addition, network resources typically are not auto-scaled. In this paper we describe a Cloud resource auto-scaling system that addresses and overcomes above limitations.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128954328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most popular approach to this paradigm is centralized network management. This approach aims to simplify the complex and difficult task of managing the services of a network. One of the problems raised by the centralized management approach is that the issue of a single point of failure can negatively compromise resilience of the whole network. The aim of this paper is to describe a novel mechanism that provides an increase of resilience in SDN using a component organization. In the SDN architecture, components run independently on top of the network OS, receiving updates from the network or updates generated from other components. Through the handling of these multiple types of updates, we have successfully developed a new component: the CPRecovery component. The CPRecovery component is based on the primary-backup mechanism which offers resilience against several types of failures in a centralized controlled network. Our results show that the building of such service for networks using SDN is straightforward, much less complex, and less prone to errors. Furthermore, it is possible to build management applications resilient to diverse types of failures using component organization approach.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132420587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
