Gartner statistics show that almost 40% of unplanned application downtime is caused due to operator errors such as unintentional changes to network configuration resulting in a network outage, patch installations, service restart, etc. Yet, system admin activities on production IT systems are rarely properly logged and monitored. Existing tools to track user activities either produce too much information without any hints of a potential outage scenario or too little information to be useful in a meaningful way. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of iTrack - a framework for monitoring user activities and correlating them with system data. iTrack makes use of commonly available native monitoring and diagnostic utilities on operating systems to monitor systems events as well as system admin activity, correlates these two sets of information and categorizes the activity as potentially abnormal or harmful based on its impact on the system in terms of file system, network and process activities. We demonstrate the usefulness of iTrack through several use cases and real world examples such as detecting and diagnosing system outages in real time, conducting post mortem analysis of outages, and maintaining audit logs. Our experimental evaluation of iTrack confirms that its monitoring overhead in terms of CPU time, activity completion time and data generated is within the tolerance range of most production systems. In cases, where the overhead was found to be unacceptable, we detect the underlying cause and provide solutions. These solutions improve performance by up to 20% to 90%, in terms of managed server and iTrack server CPU utilization, respectively and by up to 2 times in terms of completion time of certain system admin activities on the managed server.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122833692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each protocol exhibits a certain degree of performance optimality and service resilience in distinct operating regions of the network infrastructure and the environment. During run-time, the SP selects one of the protocol modules that can meet the application-requested Quality of Service (QoS) obligation against the prevailing operating conditions. Under normal conditions when the external disturbances are benign (e.g., low packet loss in the network), an optimal usage of the network resources is important. Under adverse conditions however (e.g., heavy packet loss), a sustained access to the network service at some minimum acceptable level becomes more important than a resource-optimal service offering. Often, a resilient protocol incurs more resource usage to tackle the hostile environment conditions than a performance-conscious protocol tuned for the normal case operations. Accordingly, a protocol selection by the SP considers the trade-off between `service resilience' under extreme operating conditions and `resource optimality' under normal operations. Our model allows a dynamic switching from one protocol module to another at run-time based on the changing environment conditions.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115549331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem is to find center directions of sectorized antenna formation and angular width of sectors by RF fingerprint data. The RF fingerprint data contains cell-ID, as the form of reference Pilot Number (PN), and Radio Signal Strength Index (RSSI). We show a fingerprint map of reference PN and calculate center direction and angular width of sectors. By the appropriate estimation of center direction and angular width, we make economic planning for FMS subscriber penetration. The scheduled subscriber penetration plan gives critical impact to radio resource planning for commercial service providers.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"15 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132090480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inherent variability, limited component reliability, and constrained resources of MANETs (Mobile Ad hoc Networks) make the problem not just more important, but also critical. Practical development and deployment considerations imply that fault detection and localization methods must i) avoid relying on overly detailed models of network protocols and traffic assumptions and instead rely on actual cross-layer measurements/observations, and ii) be applicable across different network scales and topologies with minimum adjustments. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of such goals, and proposes an important and as yet unexplored approach to fault management in MANETs: network-invariant fault detection, localization and diagnosis with limited knowledge of the underlying network and traffic models. We show how fault management methods can be derived by observing statistical network/traffic measurements in one network, and subsequently applied to other networks with satisfactory performance. We demonstrate that a carefully designed but widely applicable set of local and weak global indicators of faults can be efficiently aggregated to produce highly sensitive and specific methods that perform well when applied to MANETs with varying sizes, topologies, and traffic matrices.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128599802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of network mobility and lack of reliable quality-of-service (QoS) support in these communicating technologies, it is challenging to guarantee high quality in vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. In this paper, we evaluate a novel policy to support resource reservation for mobile networks. We also define a probing mechanism based on IPv6 messages and traffic load estimation at mobile routers and home agent to enable NEMOs choose the most optimal egress routing path to reach Internet. In this approach we use concept of coalition clusters within the network where mutual interdependency between different clusters is characterized by the concept of spatial network correlation. Then by using stochastic models of the process we give up some details characteristic for coalition game theory in order to be able to include some additional parameters for network scaling. Applications of this model are: a) Estimation of average time τ to reach grand coalition and its variance στ2 through closed form equations. These parameters are important in designing the process in dynamic environment. b) Managing the dimensioning the coalition cluster within the network c) Modelling the network spatial correlation characterizing mutual visibility of the interfering links. d) Modelling of the effect of the new link activation/inactivation on the coalition forming process. e) Modelling the effect of link mobility on the coalition forming process.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130657100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the exciting progresses have been made in service optimization area, the service optimization on Convergent Network (CN)-based Service Delivery Platform (SDP) is still a new significant hot topic that requires analytical modeling. This paper presents a new architecture of SDP for the Convergent Network, and proposes a service optimization model for analyzing the cooperative performance among the service consumers, service-oriented intermediaries, and service provider on CN-based SDP. The model and techniques proposed are suitable for cross-layer optimization over the various heterogeneous service systems coexisting in the convergent network.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127501797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the volume of data required for performance analysis has been increasing due to diversification of network environments, the time required to detect any variation in the network condition has also grown. Due to the complexity of managed data, network services are at a risk of degrading customer experiences. Accordingly, to enable instant performance analysis, we present lightweight performance analysis to dynamically change the monitoring network resource via our proposed two functions. One is a continuous rule-creation function, which creates an analysis rule to change a monitoring resource based on hierarchical network topology and the network condition. The other is a data control function, which can suppress performance data by controlling a database based on the analysis rule. These functions can facilitate not only understanding of network quality, but also reduction of the analysis processing load. To evaluate our approach, a mechanism implemented into a prototype performance analysis system was successfully demonstrated in a network testbed. Its effectiveness was validated in that the proposed performance analysis mechanism reduced CPU utilization by one-third compared to the existing performance analysis approach.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128201879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, due to the scale of these networks, routing protocols with well defined hierarchies have been proposed. By defining different size scenarios with twenty different possible transitions in hierarchies for 2, 3 and 4 clusters, the impact of using such mechanism is evaluated. Simulation based results are presented for 2 different routing protocols showing that a Deferred Routing approach is able to successfully handle hierarchical transitions, delivering up to 4.5 times more data traffic than the remaining protocols, while maintaining a lower overhead. These results motivate the further utilization of such scheme for future large scale wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126265126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its best effort delivery approach is ill-suited to guarantee the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of many existing multimedia services, which results in a significant reduction of the Quality of Experience. This paper presents a solution to these problems, in the form of a framework for dynamically setting up federations between the stakeholders involved in the content delivery chain. More specifically, the framework provides an automated mechanism to set up end-to-end delivery paths from the content provider to the access Internet Service Providers (ISPs), which act as its direct customers and represent a group of end-users. Driven by Service Level Agreements (SLAs), QoS contracts are automatically negotiated between the content provider, the access ISPs, and the intermediary network domains along the delivery paths. These contracts capture the delivered QoS and resource reservation costs, which are subsequently used in the price negotiations between content provider and access ISPs. Additionally, it supports the inclusion of cloud providers within the federations, supporting on-the-fly allocation of computational and storage resources. This allows the automatic deployment and configuration of proxy caches along the delivery paths, which potentially reduce delivery costs and increase delivered quality.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114282406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
