It will offer flexibility and diversity with scalable content and services that are accessible through a wide range of interfaces and devices. However, the biggest challenge now is how to enable and test the proposed approaches so that they can be validated without sacrificing the current production infrastructure. The OpenFlow protocol allows production networking environments such as campus networks, metropolitan networks or R&D networks, to be used as experimental infrastructure hosting, future Internet architectures, software and protocols, in parallel with the production traffic. During rollout, there is a practical problem that arises with Legacy networks that do not support OpenFlow and need to be replaced/upgraded or refined by means of costly network re-engineering. This paper proposes a new OpenFlow architecture with new components, capable of managing Legacy-non-OpenFlow elements by offering a new solution that facilitates the management of Legacy technologies and allows them to be employed in FI experimentation environment and increase the number of experiment with the Legacy Network Environment using OpenFlow control.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"30 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124237909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since an important requirement is the customer's service availability, we focus on routing and admission control in optical networks to improve the SP's ability to meet customers' availability requirements. Previous researchers used statistical path availabilities to satisfy SLA requirements. A more accurate measure is the actual probability that the request will satisfy the SLA requirements. Furthermore, since typically the SP's goal is to maximize profit, a good admission control policy should also consider the profitability of the request. We study the problem of provisioning connection requests to maximize profit in optical networks. We propose a two-step solution to this problem: first, efficient SLA-aware routing and second, intelligent admission control. For the SLA-aware routing, we consider both single path and pair of paths (one primary and one backup) solutions that route the request while minimizing the SLA violation probability. For the admission control, we propose a model to express the profitability of a request and an admission control policy that considers the violation probability and profitability to determine if and how the request should be admitted. Our admission control policy assesses a request's profitability by considering not only its expected profit but also by quantifying its resource utilization. Our results show that our solution provisions more requests, satisfies more SLA requirements, and yields more expected profit than the traditional approach.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123652141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) provides strong network infrastructure for mobile nodes, there still exists a missing link to the achievement of MIPv6-based VM migration. Real-world IaaS datacenters require guest-transparent and flexible tunneling mechanisms, which are not provided by existing MIPv6 programs. In this paper, we propose a guest-transparent MIPv6 tunneling mechanism (Kagemusha), that performs Client MIPv6 signaling and tunneling on a host operating system. No MIPv6 program is required to be installed into a guest operating system. The proposed system is fully compatible with existing home agents. It basically works with most virtual machine monitors, including Qemu/KVM and Xen. We have developed the first proof-of-concept prototype of the proposed mechanism. Our experiments showed that our prototype system successfully created MIPv6 tunnels with existing home agents. Its performance overhead was negligible for normal use cases. We also confirmed that the prototype system successfully supported live migration, transparently achieving continuous network reachability for migrated VMs. The downtime of migration increased only by several hundred milliseconds.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114223499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We argue that building the instrumentation and measurement system to monitor and capture the behavior of the network is just as important and challenging as setting up the network itself, especially in a virtualized and federated environment where getting information from experimental nodes is too complicated and too much to handle for a typical user. In this paper, we describe the design of an instrumentation and measurement infrastructure that allows users to monitor their experiments. The challenge that virtualization and federation of GENI testbeds bring to instrumentation and monitoring is how to hide the details of instrumentation setup from users so that users do not need to be experts in system administration or network management of virtualized and federated systems, but are still able to “see” what is going on with their experiments. Our instrumentation tool sets up experiment-specific monitoring infrastructure that is tailored to capture, record, and display only information associated with that experiment. Our tools are currently available in GENI, and we present a simple example of how to use them to instrument an experiment.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"218 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116375360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have been successful in enabling loose coupling among services by storing, managing and exposing interface descriptions of available services in a standard description language. However, existing service registries fall short of fulfilling the promise of enabling automatic service discovery and invocation and usually are tied to a particular web service technology. We present RegSOP that uses a novel approach of utilizing behavioral descriptions of available services as the basis for registering and discovering services. Behavioral descriptions can be classified and made available to the programmer at development time without committing to any particular service instance or underlying web service technology. Further, RegSOP computes different relationships among service behavior and automatically builds an ontology of service behavior. RegSOP, therefore, reduces the discovery process at runtime to a quick lookup of service classname. We present the design and implementation of RegSOP and report our evaluation of its capabilities.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114844339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of the technique is to provide a stable and well managed topology, so that other protocols can be built on the top of it. Having a stable and predictable topology is a fundamental step to enable the real utilization of wireless networks, mainly for ad hoc and sensor networks. The proposed method is based on the economy concept of free market, more specifically, in the laws of supply and demand. Each role in the defined topology has a cost; nodes trade their attachment and role in the network. The system eventually reaches a Pareto optimal allocation, what is a fair and stable configuration for all the participants. The method is distributed and flexible. Just by changing a small vector of basic prices, we can shape drastically different network topologies. The method permits even the modification of the topology characteristics of already deployed networks. This kind of feature is specially appreciated in the context of Public Safety Networks (PSN). In this kind of network, the same rescue team may have drastically different needs, depending on the kind of disaster they are attending.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122255105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are some issues with mobile sensor nodes joining or leaving the sensor network since the mobile sensor node is easier to lose its connectivity compared to the fixed sensor nodes. In order to regain its connectivity, the mobile sensor nodes must spend more time and energy to perform the re-association procedure, resulting in an efficiency decay of the sensor network. To solve this problem, we refer to the previous research to design an adaptive weighted link quality indicator prediction based scheme in the media access layer. The proposed scheme can reduce the non-connectivity time of mobile sensor node by early performing the re-association procedure. Additionally, we design a simple procedure to lessen the Ping-Pong effect problem without additional computation overhead, thereby improving stability of the connection between the mobile sensor node and its corresponding coordinator.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130290658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

End-users can benefit from applications that deliver information in real time. On the other hand, administrating these applications is not a trivial task. Components may fail and invalidate an application. In this essay we present IDEAL-TRAFFIC: a framework based on SOA architecture with modules to manage the state of the service. IDEAL-TRAFFIC provides a simple interface that enables the system administrator to create applications and to make them available to the user. A self-adaptation process is necessary in order to ensure quality of services. In order to maximize resources usage, a process of readaptation is embedded. These approaches follow the rules of the application's requirements and do not depend on human intervention.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134196492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among those challenges, the management of network's heterogeneity represents a highly complex problem. The most popular proposals addressing this problem following RFC 3139 guidelines, translate from mid-level independent representations to the network's services and devices heterogeneous management interfaces and data models. However, the translation mechanisms defined so far, apart from being highly complex, perform inefficient mapping operations and depend on the administrator manual intervention to maintain and validate the mappings. The MiNSC framework was created to overcome the limitations of those translation mechanisms, providing a mid-level management abstraction based on the association of standard network management interfaces and standard network management information models. Supported through a distributed model, the MiNSC architecture improves network services resilience to node failures. This paper describes this new integrated management approach, illustrating and experimenting its functionalities for the DNS service configuration management, capable of automatic node's configuration replication and redeployment aiming to improve the service's resilience.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114743663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This gap, likely to become bigger in the coming years, needs to be addressed by more dynamic and autonomic management techniques. The ultimate aim is to provide the network with the functionality to manage itself. This paper outlines an architecture which provides support to facilitate self-organisation in a network's management/control plane. The central element of this research is a novel message-passing framework, facilitating de-composition and dynamic composition of services. The overall design of the autonomic network management architecture is first introduced but the focus is on the communication protocols and interactions between Atomic Functional Blocks, the basic auto-nomic management elements that provide a network management service.","PeriodicalId":364494,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114979571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
