It aims to shed light on the paradoxes and contradictions still affecting both formal and lived forms of European citizenship regimes.

Method: This qualitative study is based on fieldwork carried out between 2022 and 2024, which included informal meetings, interviews with migrant women, employers, trade unionists, health and social workers, and participant observation in an after-school center for migrant children.

Results: The results show that Romanian women face multiple vulnerabilities due to poor working and living conditions, physical and social isolation, gender, family situation, and legal status. Their European citizenship paradoxically subjects them to worse conditions than other migrant workers. Despite their precarious situations, these women display agency practices and counteractions in their daily lives, mainly through micro-strategies that might at first glance appear discreet and passive yet, at the same time, are the outcome of their conscious capacity to adapt to potentially unbearable circumstances. They also employ reworking strategies, such as quitting jobs, and occasionally engage in long-term acts of rupture to claim rights and challenge power structures.

Discussion: The analysis contributes to the debate on how structural determinants of oppression and exploitation relate to subjectivity and agency. It explores various forms of counteraction and survival through the concept of lived citizenship, novel ways of experiencing and enacting citizenship within and across different contexts and spaces, both physical and symbolic. While these actions are neither striking nor highly organized or effective in achieving emancipation, they serve as responses and countermeasures within a restrictive system and shed light on migrant women's reflexivity and struggle for autonomy and control over their lives that deserve greater attention.
","PeriodicalId":36297,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Sociology","volume":"10 ","pages":"1558541"},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2025-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12372337/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144972603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research examines the lived experiences of four individuals, highlighting the compounded adversities they face due to their intersecting identities as LGBTQ+, men of color, and immigrants. The case studies reveal significant trauma and mental health struggles stemming from pre-migration violence, in-transit dangers, and post-migration discrimination. Additionally, the study addresses the critical role of language proficiency in their integration and the importance of tailored support systems, including community networks and legal protections. The findings underscore the severe impact of discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, and immigration status on the mental health and social integration of gay Dominican immigrant men. Despite these challenges, the participants demonstrate remarkable resilience and hope for the future, striving for better employment opportunities, educational advancement, and community belonging. This study evaluates healthcare systems as mesocosms to understand social differences in spousal violence perceptions in sub-Saharan Africa, concretely, cohort differences in victim decisions in spousal violence (VDSV).

Conceptual framework: Medical dominance theory criticizes medical power asymmetry, while socio-ecological theory illuminates social disparities in human behavior. This study investigates socio-behavioral patterns in medicine as parallels to spousal violence behaviors, analyzing how power asymmetry influences VDSV in sub-Saharan Africa.

Methods: A cross-sectional study analyzed data from the latest Demographic and Health Surveys (2001-2024) across 31 countries, focusing on 193,232 women aged 15-49 years and their VDSV patterns: none, Discordant, and Other types. Unadjusted odds ratios (ORs) examined associations between VDSV patterns and birth cohorts (BCs) while adjusting for confounders. Interaction terms assessed the impact of neighborhood ethnic diversity, relationship power differences, and healthcare access. A two-level hierarchical multinomial logistic regression model analyzed VDSV variation, considering individual, cluster, and household-level confounders with random country effects. Spatial interpolation addressed geographical clustering. Analyses were performed using the McLogit package in R (Version 4.4.0).

Results: Across BCs, a greater percentage change in predicted marginal probabilities was observed for Other type VDSV compared to Discordant VDSV. Overall, women with recent healthcare access had smaller percentage changes; those with a large relationship power difference, especially, showed the opposite trend. Notably, observed healthcare access effects persisted beyond socioeconomic disparities.

Discussion: Higher VDSV amongst younger birth cohorts suggests lower SV-accepting attitudes. VDSV differences across healthcare access intimate anti-violence intervention exposure effects; relationship power differences play moderating roles. Persistent adjusted healthcare access effects suggest roles for narrowing socio-health inequalities in SSA.

Conclusion: The study results advocate for macro-societal policies within healthcare that address social issues, particularly through theory-based approaches. Descriptive analyses reveal that individuals with higher levels of education are significantly more likely to be involved in all types of associations (expressive, instrumental, advocacy). The same education gap holds for all forms of political engagement (attitudinal, institutional, protest, community-oriented, individual). While education acts as a gateway mechanism that affects the likelihood of becoming affiliated with an association, the propensity to actively engage in associational activities after joining is largely independent of education. A longitudinal approach controlling for time-invariant endogeneity shows that active associational involvement increases almost all forms of political engagement. Due to their lower political participation prior to joining, these positive effects are in most cases more pronounced for individuals with low qualifications. Thus, most types of associations effectively reduce the educational gap in political participation. This is particularly true for those forms of participation that are most congruent with associational activities, such as membership in political parties and community-based voluntary work. Political engagement gains are higher among highly educated members only under certain circumstances. This happens either in associational contexts where internal responsibilities are skewed in their favor, as in the case of environmental and charitable organizations, or where the raison d'être of the association implies homogeneous educational qualifications, as in the case of exclusive sports clubs and specific trade unions. Individualized forms of political participation, such as boycotts, are the forms of engagement least affected by the collective action that takes place in associations. Taken together, these empirical findings suggest that associations are an often neglected channel of social mobility, mitigating political differences between social classes and thus promoting social cohesion. At the same time, they offer a more nuanced view, emphasizing that not all associations are capable of bridging the political capital of different social classes and that not all political attitudes are malleable enough to be modified.
","PeriodicalId":36297,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in Sociology","volume":"10 ","pages":"1584885"},"PeriodicalIF":2.2,"publicationDate":"2025-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12371539/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144972573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design process for this new version prioritized the active involvement of women public transport users at all stages and enhanced the use of video game-specific resources, such as multiple playable characters and power-ups, to enrich gameplay and narrative depth. These strategies resulted in greater agency for the game's protagonists and more accurate representation of historically marginalized groups. Qualitative transformations were observed both in the player experience and within the largely male development team, as the participatory process fostered ongoing learning and co-creation. Particularly, the importance of the Arabic language (UAE) cannot be overstated due to its distinct role in positioning the United Arab Emirates as a culturally distinct society. Considering the importance of the Arabic language, this study also examined its role and effect on socio-cultural identity and family values in Emirati society. Based on the proposition of Cultural Transmission Theory, this study gathered data from 200 young individuals currently residing in Ajman, UAE. Results revealed a positive effect of the Arabic language on socio-cultural identity, implying that it helps recognize local values and social participation and helps with the significance of social laws. The effect of the Arabic language on family values also remained significant, suggesting that it improves family relations, helps understand values and a sense of respect, and strengthens relationships with ancestral heritage. Overall, these results indicated the Arabic language's strong, sportive role in enhancing the sense of commitment and encouraging humility in society. These results also showed that the role of the Arabic language in promoting a sense of unity and social stability further leads to improved social participation. Thus, the role of the Arabic language is acknowledged and highlighted, further emphasizing the role of language as a source of communication and socio-cultural cohesion.
