The design of this research was quasi-experimental with non-equivalent groups pretest-posttest. Two groups were used in the study; the experimental and control groups were given different treatments. The researcher taught the experimental group using the Herringbone technique with the TPS strategy, while the researcher taught the control group using the conventional method. The population of this study was the seventh grade of Junior High School in Bangkalan. The data were obtained by administering the reading test to two intact groups. The research was started by giving pre-tests, treatments, and post-tests to experimental and control groups. The data of the test were analyzed by using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results indicated that combining of herringbone technique with the TPS strategy was effective than the conventional technique. However, when examined in terms of post-test, both showed a statistically significant difference in reading comprehension. Based on the findings of this research, combining herringbone with think pair share appeared to be a plausible alternative for teaching English reading comprehension to the seventh-year students of Junior High School in Bangkalan.","PeriodicalId":362374,"journal":{"name":"JEELL (Journal of English Education, Linguistics and Literature) English Department of STKIP PGRI Jombang","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115276488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of banning the use of smartphones, a smart teacher has to be able to encourage EFL learners to use smartphones wisely to facilitate their learning. Smartphones enable the learners to use the language in a real situation outside the classroom, which is called Extramural English Learning. This kind of situation is believed to contribute to learners vocabularies. Learners’ ability to use various kinds of vocabulary, especially English academic words, will make a positive contribution to their writing. Employing a correlation design, the aim of the research was to investigate the correlation between the use of smartphones as extramural English learning and learners’ vocabularies focusing on English academic words. Questionnaire and writing test were used as instruments to collect the data from 35 undergraduate students of English department in East Java, Indonesia. The results of the data analysis by using Pearson Correlation confirmed the significant positive correlation between the use of smartphones as extramural English learning and learners’ vocabularies that indicated the benefit of extramural activities with smartphones on enriching learners’ vocabulary. Further, the pedagogical implication was also discussed.","PeriodicalId":362374,"journal":{"name":"JEELL (Journal of English Education, Linguistics and Literature) English Department of STKIP PGRI Jombang","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129683891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pursuant to the researcher’s pretest and teaching experience, it was found that students speaking ability was low. It was considered necessary for the researcher to conduct action research since this school is the researcher’s institution. This study was conducted in action research (PTK). The setting of the study was SMA Ulil Albab East Lombok involving 25 students as the participants of the research. The instruments of the research were test and observation sheets. The criterion of success was KKM in which KKM for East Lombok is 70. The data were analyzed by assessing the criterion of success and also the statistical computation in which the researcher calculated the result of descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistical analysis shows that the mean scores of the posttest is higher than the pretest, resulting in 83.4 < 70.6. Therefore, the peer-tutoring technique can improve the students’ speaking ability in SMA Ulil Albab, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 which is lower than the significant level (0.05). Therefore, the peer tutoring technique can improve the students’ speaking ability in SMA Ulil Albab, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The result of the t-test is higher than the t-table, 7.67 < 1.70. This concludes that there is significant different in the teaching of speaking by using peer tutoring technique in improving the students’ speaking ability. The total number of students who were considered as active in involving themselves in the teaching and learning activities has met the criterion of success. It was proven by the percentages of the very active students (56%), supported by the percentage of the active students (32%) achieved 88% which was more 18% than the percentage of criteria of success which was 70%. The result of the posttest shows almost all students got score higher than 70. It means that more than 70% of the students got score 70 or higher. This surely proves that the criterion of success has been met. The teaching of speaking by using peer tutoring technique can help the student’s achievement in improving speaking ability[v1] . The present study investigates EFL teachers’ level of engagement with and in Teacher Action Research (TAR), as well as their motives for the engagement. Employing a quantitative approach with a survey as the design, a questionnaire was distributed to EFL teachers teaching at secondary school to collect data. Descriptive statistics were run to analyze the data. The results showed that EFL teachers’ engagement with TAR was high, while their engagement in TAR was moderate. Thus, encouraging EFL Teachers to conduct TAR will consequently get them used to continuously make reflections on what they did in their classroom in which better teaching-learning quality can be achieved. Besides, the policy makers should provide some fundamental supports to encourage the teachers making the research engagement.","PeriodicalId":362374,"journal":{"name":"JEELL (Journal of English Education, Linguistics and Literature) English Department of STKIP PGRI Jombang","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116791166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
