In this system, partial discharge may occur inside the N2 gas bubbles due to the gasification of LN2 in the paper. We have been suggesting the paper-ice composite material as one of the candidates for the insulating system with LN2 in high-temperature superconducting cables. The paper-ice composite material is an insulating paper filled with ice and it could inhibit the partial discharge inside the microscopic N2 gas bubbles remained in the paper. This research investigated capacitance and dielectric loss tangent of the paper-ice composite material with changing field strength. Finally, we clarified that the paper-ice composite material could provide lower capacitance system to paper-LN2 composite insulating system for high temperature superconducting cables.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114464650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Partial discharges may occur in liquid insulating materials in the form of streamers. For diagnosis purpose, understanding of discharges in the insulations is important. This paper reports experimental results of partial discharges (PD) in silicone oil under divergent AC electric field obtained using needle-plane electrode system. The discharges occurred were measured by using a phase-resolved partial discharge measurement system. The PD parameters such as magnitude, phase angle of occurrence and number were analyzed. The measurement results indicated that at the initiation stage, negative discharges were observed first before positive discharges occurred at a higher applied voltage. The PD patterns showed the strong roles of instantaneous applied voltage on the PD magnitude as well as PD probability. The PD pulses concentrated around the peak of applied voltage. Overall measured data showed a small unbalance between positive and negative PD. For a deeper understanding, a computer simulation of PD patterns in liquid insulating material was done by using Whitehead PD electrical equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit contains capacitors and a spark gap. The simulated phase-resolved PD patterns were compared to those experimental results. The simulated PD patterns were similar to those experimental results. The results indicated that Whitehead PD electrical equivalent circuit is suitable for representing PD in liquid rather than in solid.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120949924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The breakdown field E1mA (electric field at 1 mA/cm2) increases, keep stable and then decreases with increase of impulse degradation, while nonlinear coefficient α drops significantly over the whole degradation process. SEM results indicate that after the degradation of ZnO varistor ceramics, more voids and inhomogeneity of grain distribution can be observed. In addition, the critical thickness of dimensional effect of ZnO varistor ceramics increases with the impulse current degradation process. The relaxation processes of these samples were also studied by means of dielectric spectra measured in a wide range of temperature and frequency. The activation energy of intrinsic and extrinsic defects which exhibit structure of grain and grain boundary, were decreased obviously when degradation happens. It is suggested that the large impulse current will lead to the breakdown of some grain boundaries and consequently change the microstructure and defect structure of ZnO varistor ceramics.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116128563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The insulator used in this present work is suspension type, class 52-1. The breakdown voltage of defective insulators in dry and uncontaminated condition under AC voltage is compared. The insulators were arranged into 3 main formats: (1) three good insulators and one broken insulator (2) two good insulators and two broken insulators (3) one good insulator and three broken insulators. The 1st and 3rd formats were subdivided into four arrangements while the 2nd format was subdivided into 6 formats depending upon the position of good and broken insulators. Test results showed that the value of breakdown voltage depended upon the position of good and broken insulators. Also, the breakdown voltage of the 2nd format with the 5th subdivision, good insulators were at 1st (top) and 3rd positions while broken insulators were at 2nd and 4th positions, was highest. The insulator installation for testing and its atmospheric correction factor followed ANSI C29.1-1988.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128697712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper deals with the effects of addition of nano scale silica filler on tracking and erosion resistance of silicone rubber. Silica (SiO2) particles of 7 nm, 40 nm, 0.5 μm and 22 μm in average of primary particle size were used as silica fillers. For effective mixing nano filler, an ultrasonic homogenizer was used. Aluminum trihydrate (Al(OH)3 or ATH) particle of 10.5 μm in average of primary particle size was used as micro filler for comparison. Filler content was mainly fixed in 5 weight (wt) % in all composites. The dispersion state of nano filler in specimens was observed by scanning electron microscopy and then evaluated quantitatively by an imaging analysis. Inclined plane tracking and erosion test according to the IEC 60587 and arcing resistance test according to the IEC 60621 were performed to investigate effects of nano silica dispersion for erosion resistance property.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133259700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, surface plasma treatment was carried out using atmospheric pressure glow discharge Helium plasma on silane-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles before the fabrication of the nanocomposite. The surface energy of the particles was increased after such modification. Epoxy resin/SiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by employing untreated and treated nanoparticles respectively. Insulation performances of the nanocomposites were evaluated in terms of the resistance against partial discharge (PD) and the breakdown strength. Test results showed that the PD levels of the nanocomposites, both with untreated and plasma treated nano-fillers, were noticeably reduced compared to that of the pure epoxy resin sample. As a result, the electrical endurance of nanocomposite was improved. A higher PD inception and dielectric breakdown strength were also detected in nanocomposite samples. A comb-like spectrum was observed in the PD level trend of nanocomposites. Although the sample with plasma treated nanoparticles had a higher PD density, the endurance was noticeably reinforced over the one with the untreated SiO2.","PeriodicalId":360527,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131310629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
