A subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) system has been recently developed with a lead just implanted under the skin instead of 1 or 2 transvenous leads traditionally implanted in a body. This may greatly reduce the complexity of the implantation procedure without or with less fluoroscopy, and avoid the complications due to transvenous leads. Although the safety and efficacy of the S-ICD has been evaluated in the clinical study, to date, a theoretical research has never been performed to study the conduction of the defibrillation currents in human bodies due to the defibrillation shocks of S-ICD systems. The conduction pattern of defibrillation currents may help improve the defibrillation effect through finding a better implantation site of the S-ICD generator or lead, and a better defibrillation protocol. As the defibrillation current or voltage in the body is impossible to be accurately measured due to the electrode polarization during the defibrillation shock, we performed the computer simulation to study the defibrillation effects of S-ICD systems in 4 suggested configurations. The defibrillation threshold (DFT) and myocardial damage for each configuration were estimated from the simulation results. The configuration with a left lateral pulse generator and an 8-cm coil electrode positioned at the left parasternal margin demonstrated the lowest DFT and minimum myocardial damage in the simulation. The simulation result of DFT is consistent with previous clinical studies, and the simulation method may serve as a tool to find an improved implantation configuration for an S-ICD system.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":" 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132158747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To obtain the context information, people often use video cameras, microphones, and other devices. These devices can obtain a wealth of environmental information, but could easily lead to privacy issues. Large environmental information also need more computing resources to process the information. In this paper, we study human behavior identification based on simple sensors. Using fuzzy logic we analyze the sensor data and try to identify four different activities. Experimental results show that the proposed method can correctly identify 83.7% of these four activities. Results given here will be useful for designing smart homes, smart office, and so on.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114998633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most previous work on pulse-coupled oscillators assume fixed and (close to) equal oscillator frequencies, the presented system tackles the challenge of different starting frequencies. Open source implementations in Puredata, Max, and Matlab are provided. Test results for setups of six nodes show that nodes reach a state of harmonic synchrony, where fire events coincide and oscillators display integer-ratio frequency relations.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"323 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123651680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following is an examination of several applications in which type 1 and 2 fuzzy logic has been utilized in artificial intelligence and machine learning problems to demonstrate their capabilities. In Fuzzy Logic Inferencing for PONG (FLIP), the effectiveness of type 1 logic is examined as an optimal controller for players in the game of PONG. Robotic collaboration is also developed as the PONG game was expanded into a multiplayer option. Collaborative Learning using Fuzzy Inferencing (CLIFF) is an extension of this PONG game, however type-2 logic is used to create a robotic coach that optimizes its players to beat its opponent in a development of layered fuzzy learning. Precision Route Optimization using Fuzzy Intelligence (PROFIT) examines the use of fuzzy logic as an optimizer in an algorithmic solution to a modified Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). The TSP is modified in a way to better mimic a real-life scenario where footprints must be visited instead of simply points, which gives an interesting complexity to the problem. Considering the successes associated with these research endeavors, it can be concluded that type 1 and 2 fuzzy logic are both interesting tools that can further the abilities of intelligent systems and machine learning algorithms.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126530812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In aim to be language independent the system only uses very basics treatments and combines them to generate the output sentences. Moreover, all the learning and generation processes are realized in independent threads making the system enable to generate the outputs in real-time. Concretely, the user can input a new sentence at any time and influence the current output generation. We carry out experimentation in two grammaticality different languages and got some results proving our system is efficient to generate responses of a simple dialogue.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132614432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Kinki Region includes four prefectures that are Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Kyoto. That region has three airports for domestic travelers: Osaka Airport, Kansai Airport and Kobe Airport. Since Osaka Airport and Kobe Airport locate near to the urban area of Kinki Region, it is important for Kansai Airport to take some actions to collect more air travelers. In order to share air travelers in this region, cooperation among these three airports is highly important. We assess a train fare strategy in order to attract more travelers by reducing the access fee to the airport using an agent-based simulation tool. In developing simulation tool, we employ a social awareness approach. That is, we develop parameters in our tool based on real statistics. Simulation results show an appropriate train fare for Kansai Airport.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127094875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To provide artificial awareness ability for machines, a bio-inspired salient environmental sound detection and recognition method is proposed. The salient sounds are detected by using the auditory saliency map which based on heterogeneous saliency features from visual and acoustic domain. Spectral and temporal saliency features from both power spectral density (PSD) and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) as well as the visual saliency from log-scale spectrogram are applied to yield the final auditory saliency for salient sound detection. To improve the detection accuracy, short-term Shannon entropy (SSE) and a computational inhibition of return (IOR) model are initially proposed to verify the temporal saliency characteristic. The detected salient sounds are classified by using the features which based on the fuzzy vector of spectral energy distribution and MFCC. A two-level classification is presented based on the support vector machine (SVM) for recognition task. Experiments are carried out on the real environmental sound examples. The results show that, over 83% recognition accuracy can be achieved by using proposed fuzzy vector based features, and the overall accuracy of 94.65% can be obtained when combined with MFCC based features.","PeriodicalId":359404,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 6th International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology (iCAST)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114910302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
