One problem in using such algorithms is the lack of objective criteria by which to decide whether an averager or a median filter is more appropriate. We formulate an L/sub p/ (1/spl les/p/spl les/2) normed filter where p is chosen as a function of the kurtosis of the residual vector; we restrict attention in this work to a mean filter (p=2) and a median filter (p=1). In order to highlight the effectiveness of this filtering algorithm we demonstrate reduced sum squared error by adaptively filtering a sinusoid in the presence of both additive white Gaussian noise and an impulsive noise component.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"74 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124261038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This limitation makes it difficult to reduce the bit rate in very low bit rate speech coding. To resolve this problem, recurrent neural networks (RNN) were applied to interpolate LSP coefficients, and it was possible to increase the duration of interpolation to about 100 ms without so much degradation of the synthesized speech quality.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116415796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method uses a tunable quadrature sigma-delta modulator to re-quantise a real- or complex-valued input stream to a reduced precision, so removing the requirement for a full multiplier in the filter hardware. This makes the technique very attractive for implementation using FPGAs. The re-quantisation process preserves the dynamic range of the signal components contained in the bandwidth of the filter, while shifting the re-quantisation noise to the spectral region to be rejected by the filter. The filter architecture described and its implementation using Xilinx FPGAs is presented.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131863885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal HMM filter presented in the paper is computationally of order N 3 per time instant, where N is the number of message symbols. Previously, optimal HMM filters have been of computational order N 4 per time instant. Also, suboptimal HMM filters have be proposed of computation order N 2 per time instant. The approach presented in this paper uses two coupled HMM filters and exploits knowledge of their interdependence to achieve computational gains. A simulation study is also presented.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133483182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The algorithm consists of two stages: constructing the representation and the matching process. The representation is a set of curvature waveforms of an object contour viewed at different resolution levels. In the matching procedure, only extrema on the representation are used. This makes the process efficient and less sensitive to small variations on the representation. Experimental results show that the representation is robust and, combined with the matching algorithm, it efficiently classifies unknown objects.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123543687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim is to reduce the quantization error by incorporating memory into the VQ scheme. The first scheme is a form of finite-state VQ FSVQ) which we will call subband FSVQ (SB-FSVQ) and the second is a form of predictive VQ (PVQ) applied to image subbands. We will refer to the second scheme as subband PVQ (SB-PVQ). It was found that both techniques outperform conventional subband VQ (memory-less) and spatial domain VQ in PSNR and perceptual tesms. It was also found that despite SB-FSVQ's ability to capture non-linear dependencies, SB-PVQ performs slightly better.","PeriodicalId":359344,"journal":{"name":"Fourth International Symposium on Signal Processing and Its Applications","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116735464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
