The works of M. I. Bogdanovich, E. I. Totleben, H. J. Gubbenet, F. K. Zatler, N. I. Pirogov, N. V. Berg, O. I. Konstantinov demonstrate the examples of historical evidence. The article shows that the source of the genre nature of the Sevastopol stories was the military experience of the young officer Tolstoy, who created a panorama of events woven from a qualitatively different figurative and artistic material and having an immeasurably greater impact than statistics and official documents. The analysis covrers artistic techniques of the writer in the paintings of the Sevastopol hospital, the assault on the Malakhov Kurgan and the departure of the Russian army from Sevastopol. Summing up the results, it can be concluded that the artistic scale of the Sevastopol stories created by Tolstoy corresponds to the historical scale of military events. The author not only did not deviate from the historical truth, but revealed the tragic depth and sacred meaning of the Crimean War in Russian history.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114920457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

N. Ostrovsky’s comedy Rich Brides. The play was originally published in 1876 in the February issue of Otechestvennye Zapiski, but before publication it had been staged at the Alexandrinsky (St. Petersburg) and Maly (Moscow) theaters. The comedy provoked very contradictory, and sometimes rude, judgments from critics. In 1876, A. N. Ostrovsky, possibly under the influence of criticism, attempted to partially change the text of the play, but not all the author’s corrections were included in the final version of the comedy, published in 1878. Manuscript departments of the Russian State Library and the Institute of Russian Literature preserve draft autographs of the play, testifying to the formation of the author’s intention. To describe the main stages of work on the text, tracing the nature of the main changes, later saved or rejected by the playwright, is the main task of the presented work.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128887597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Palievsky’s role in the preparation by its author of the unfinished novel by L. N. Tolstoy from Peter the Great’s era for the Complete works of the writer. Comparison of the episode about Prince V. V. Golitsyn from L. N. Tolstoy’s unfinished novel with an episode of the same content from A. N. Tolstoy’s novel “Peter the Great” reveals correspondences and parallels between the two episodes. It gives every reason to conclude that the episode about Prince V. V. Golitsyn from L. N. Tolstoy’s work is a literary source of an episode from A. N. Tolstoy’s novel. The article establishes the source of A. N. Tolstoy’s acquaintance with the rough fragments of his predecessor’s work, that is their publication, carried out in 1925 by T. I. Polner in one of the emigrant publications in Prague. The role of P. V. Palievsky in this discovery lies primarily in the proposal to the author of the article to search for points of convergence between the novels of the two Tolstoys about the first Russian emperor and his time.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124543221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ivan Saverchenko shows the uniqueness of the project, which, on the basis of archival and rare materials introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, makes it possible to recreate the entire historical panorama of national interconnections in its original form. In the interview, it is reported about the funds and archives investigated by scientists, about unique documents found in the process of work, about the personalities of writers, cultural and public figures, whose work was of great importance for the creative interaction of Russian and Belarusian peoples. Particular attention is paid to the presentation of joint collective monographs, scientific articles based on research materials, international scientific forums, conferences, round tables and scientific and practical seminars.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124546418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that literary translation in Abkhazia developed in stages and in parallel with domestic literature, becoming its integral part, revealing the potential expressive capabilities of the native language. Briefly describing the legacy of the founder of Abkhaz literature D. I. Gulia, who was engaged in the translation of liturgical literature in the early 20th century, the author dwells on the most significant achievements of modern translators of Russian classical literature. Important theoretical and practical observations concerning the translation technique are presented, variants of some texts in the Abkhaz language are given, by examples of which the article illustrates the most significant discoveries and achievements of translators in the field of transferring the figurative system of the original text, rhythm and meter (when it comes to verse speech), composition, general tonality of the work.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"34 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133169252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Translations, which he did for 20 years, and a good knowledge of journals and newspapers in Europe, helped him create an example of a socio-political and literary periodical. The article examines the content of political articles devoted to the events of European life during the difficult socio-political situation of the early 19th century. Turning to various primary sources and serious foreign analysts, Karamzin deliberately set a polemical discourse in the journal, in which he himself took part as a commentator. The article traces evolution of Karamzin’s attitude towards Napoleon and notes that admiration for the deeds of the commander and statesman is replaced by disappointment and skepticism after the proclamation of his “eternal consulate.” Throughout 1803, the “Vestnik Evropy” published many materials on the successes of education and charity in Russia. The author of the article notes that Karamzin managed to lay the foundations for future “thick” Russian journals of the 19th century.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130926686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

M. Dostoevsky. The author of the review notes the source base of the study under consideration, emphasizes the breadth of views of the authors of the book, their constant desire to understand the writer in his main ideas and the smallest observations. The assessment of literary criticism in the new edition becomes the reason and basis for identifying Dostoevsky’s place in public and literary life. S. Turgenev and B. M. Markevich. It is proved that the novels of Markevich and other members of the “constellation of Moscow writers”, employees of the Russian Bulletin, were created with an attitude towards artistic polemic. The article examines connections and confrontations in the worldview of Turgenev and Markevich, who shared the ideological guidelines of the editor of the “Russian Bulletin” M. N. Katkov. Markevich advocated the state integrity of the country, in addition to Turgenev’s “nihilists” and “superfluous people”, he chose patriotic nobles as literary heroes. In the novel Types of the Past, published in the Russian Bulletin four months after the publication of the novel Smoke, Markevich contrasted Irina and Litvinov with “a virtuous matron” and “exemplary citizens”. Markevich argues with Turgenev’s cult of love as a spontaneous passion, defending Orthodox Christian values. Turgenev’s response to this novel is lost, but Markevich’s reply letter shows that Turgenev subjected him to severe criticism. In the novel Virgin Soil in the person of Nezhdanov, Turgenev gave a polemical answer to Markevich, resolving this conflict in his own way in favor of the hero’s political convictions.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126817243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gogol’s notes “Yegory in Spring,” “Nikola in Spring,” “Yuri in Autumn,” “Nikola in Winter.” G. P. Georgievsky was the first who drew attention to these sources, pointing out that Gogol’s notes are extracts from the “People’s Diary” of the doctor, ethnographer, archaeologist, paleographer and writer Ivan Petrovich Sakharov (1807–1863) in his book “Tales of the Russian People.” “People’s Diary” is combined by I. P. Sakharov with “Folk Holidays and Customs” in “Russian Folk Anniversary,” which is a part of his book “Tales of the Russian People.” The work emphasizes that, along with the complete coincidence of a number of texts of Gogol’s notes with the texts of the source, there are some discrepancies. As a result of a comparative study of the texts, it was established that Gogol’s texts are extracts not only from the “People’s Diary,” but also from “Folk Holidays and Customs,” combined with the “People’s Diary” in the “Russian Folk Anniversary” in the book by I. Referring to the essay “On the Moscow Rebellion in the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich” allows the author of the article to assert that on the eve of writing his historical work, Karamzin creates an image of an alien flattery and relying only on reliable evidence of the Russian Patriot Historian, whose word sounds like an incorruptible voice of truth not only in factological sense, but also in the state-patriotic one. According to the researcher’s observations, the analyzed essay is dominated by the point of view of a “strict historian,” who evaluates the activities of the ruler from the standpoint of national interests (“state morality”), which does not coincide with the perception of events by a sensitive author and marks an important milestone in Karamzin’s ideological evolution.","PeriodicalId":359000,"journal":{"name":"Two centuries of the Russian classics","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128649448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
