Because the principal failure is the asymmetry of information available, people resort to channels that transmit information to compensate for these drawbacks. These channels are networks of social relationships. This phenomenon is referred to as Social Capital, the network of people that an individual possesses, and whose use could bring about benefits. In the case of the financial market (especially the credit market), people make use of Social Capital when making decisions within the market. Migration essentially arises in response to the per capita income disparities between regions; as such, these flows are directly related to the production geography in Mexico. Its most advanced aspect –the shared network of wholesale broadband services– is also its principal limitation in terms of moving towards knowledge capitalism and the role of the telecommunications services industry in the growth of Mexico, the convergence process, and the mode of industrial development within the neoliberal development path. The Cantarell macro-reserve has produced significant volumes of hydrocarbons and brought countless benefits to the country, but starting in 2004, the exhaustion of the Cantarell supply began to affect the oil production platform. This research studies all of the factors that have had an impact on the performance of this macro-reserve, which are fundamental to explain the current state of affairs. The conclusion is that the management of the Cantarell oil field was less than optimal during the three time periods identified in the paper, as decisions were made on a non-technical basis, which contributed to the decline and the series of challenges facing the oil complex today.
