The consultative process was organised by two CALD consumer workers and involved a total of 28 CALD consumers, as well as eight consumer facilitators who received training from the QTMHC on interviewing and conducting focus group discussions with consumers from their own cultural background in their own language on mental illness prevention. CALD consumers drew on their personal experiences with mental illness to identify what may have made a difference to them personally in terms of prevention. They also discussed what service providers can do in both the multicultural and mental health sectors; the key issues they currently perceive as stressors for mental illness in their cultural communities (including for specific sub groups in communities at greatest risk); unmet needs and gaps in programs and services; existing activities within their communities that can further be supported or built upon to facilitate mental illness prevention; and what they as consumers would like to become involved in as part of a prevention strategy within their communities.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122489664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a small city with no specialist services for refugee mental health, a group of Somali refugee women found their own ways to cope with the enormous challenges facing them. In this paper, we describe some of these ways by drawing on many years of ethnographic and participant observation, reflecting specifically on the role of weddings and parties and the embracing of cultural dance, music, and dress on well-being. We aim to show how community-initiated activities can be therapeutic as social approaches to mental health promotion and early intervention. We also discuss how ‘westerners’ and mental health and other professionals can contribute to facilitating this process.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123023137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spite of the intricacy of the study of this construct, the paper illustrates that various scholars have recognised the relevance of culture and ethnicity in the understanding of suicidal behaviour. The author provides evidence of the need to pay more attention to the meaning and interpretation of suicide in cross-cultural research and underlines the necessity to establish cultural-sensitive prevention strategies. The paper closes by providing methodological considerations and suggestions for future research on cultural aspects of suicidal behaviour.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125761927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the patient feels their beliefs, values and practices are understood and respected by the practitioner, there is an increased likelihood a good relationship will be established and the patient will trust the doctor and the clinical procedures. To be more culturally sensitive in consultations, three additional variables – ethnocentrism, health literacy and transcultural perceptions of illness – need to be taken into account. It is near impossible for doctors to undertake education for themselves on the evergrowing variety of cultural factors that can influence the interaction with patients. Some practical ways of communicating are outlined in the use of the Cultural Awareness Tool and Narrative Therapy.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127254214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A process evaluation revealed that RAMP was implemented as intended across six primary and three secondary schools in Melbourne, Australia. Using the RAMP risk and protective factors monitoring form and screening processes, each school identified ‘at-risk’ students who had not previously been identified or received assistance from welfare staff at the school. School staff and mental health workers from local agencies reported improvements in their knowledge of risk and protective factors, and their ability to identify at-risk students following RAMP. They also reported satisfaction in outcomes for at-risk students managed within the school using RAMP. All the primary schools and one of the secondary schools continued to use some RAMP processes in their school up to 6 months after the initial implementation of the program.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122770978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These discrepancies include the methodological design and measurement of depression and culture, and the epistemological variation in researchers as to whether depression is a universal or socially constructed phenomenon. A Delphi procedure was utilised which enabled a group of eleven culture/depression experts from around the globe to respond to an open-ended questionnaire related to the methodological and epistemological problems confronting the understanding of depression across cultures. Endorsement of these issues and consensus between the Delphi participants to these issues was then assessed by two subsequent questionnaires. The results indicated that when studying depression across cultures, both universal and social constructionist approaches to depression need to be considered. Quantitative measures of depression should include only the universal aspects of depression so meaningful comparisons can be made across cultures. Quantitative information should be supplemented with qualitative descriptions from research collaborators who can provide an emic perspective of depression. Measuring culture should move beyond the scope of using Hofstede’s dimensions which, although measuring some aspects of culture, do not encompass the complexity of cultures. The impact of globalisation means that our knowledge of cultures needs to be regularly reviewed. Cross-cultural, comparative research of depression is much needed but there are many methodological and epistemological issues that need to be addressed.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133045990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, I question whether it is possible and beneficial to promote mental health in what might be thought of as an inherently ‘unhealthy’ setting. Drawing upon health promotion theory and a Foucauldian approach to power, I critique the effectiveness of two major forms of health promoting work carried out in the immigration detention setting: internally-organised services and externally-organised support and advocacy. Given the problematic nature of the detention setting, I argue that the ‘effectiveness’ of these efforts is bound up in their capacity for subverting or positivelyreforming the IDC system itself as a barrier to mental health.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131832669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of barriers have been identified as inhibiting the realisation of this goal, with the negative attitudes of professional staff being recognised as a major factor. A more pervasive barrier with the potential to minimise the positive developments in consumer participation is the issue of representation. It has been claimed that consumers who are actively involved in participatory roles are not necessarily representative of the broader population of mental health consumers. The paucity of literature makes this argument difficult to either defend or refute, although there is limited research evidence to suggest that the views of active consumers may indeed be similar to those who do not choose to have involvement. The aim of this paper is to consider the implications of engaging in debate about the extent to which consumer advocates might represent a broader group. In particular the potential consequences of this argument include: silencing activism; questioning the legitimacy of consumer roles; and, discriminatory expectations of consumers. These issues are discussed with the aim of establishing the need to use the term consumer leadership to describe participation which is aimed at the systemic level.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120951900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite this stated aim, a review of government expenditure clearly indicates that the current proportion of health expenditure afforded to mental health is not comparable to the prevalence of mental illness or the related burden of disease. This paper presents an overview of the prevalence and burden of disease imposed by mental illness. These figures are then discussed in light of government spending on mental health. On the basis of the information presented, it is concluded that a substantially higher proportion of health expenditure needs to be devoted to mental health, if the goals of government policy are to be realised. As the largest professional group of the mental health workforce, nurses need to seek out opportunities to influence policy towards a more favourable treatment of mental health issues.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131311932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants completed a questionnaire to assess their behavioural, normative and control beliefs in regards to participation. To examine beliefs, a series of multivariate analyses of variance were conducted which revealed that behavioural, normative and control beliefs distinguished between parents intending to participate in group parenting education and those who did not intend to participate. Specifically, intenders and non-intenders differed in terms of beliefs regarding: the costs (e.g., restricted approach) and benefits (e.g., improving the relationship with their children); the perceptions of important referents (e.g., family) and factors inhibiting (e.g., cost) control over participation. Results of a multiple regression analysis revealed the most important predictors of intentions were behavioural beliefs. These findings provide important applied information that can be utilised to inform future strategies to increase participation rates.","PeriodicalId":358240,"journal":{"name":"Australian e-Journal for the Advancement of Mental Health","volume":"377 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126939154","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
