Here, we describe successful combined use of liposuction and subcutaneous mastectomy in the treatment of gynecomastia. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of the liposuction combined with subcutaneous mastectomy in the treatment of gynecomastia. Subjects and Methods: In this study, a total of 28 patients were included. All the patients had undergone detailed clinical evaluation and appropriate investigations. Information regarding age of onset, etiology, laterality, nipple discharge was collected from patient’s medical records. Twenty of 28 patients had unilateral gynecomastia whereas 8 patients had bilateral gynecomastia. Based on the clinical evaluation and investigations, secondary causes of gynecomastia were ruled out. Subcutaneous mastectomy using infraareolar skin incision combined with liposuction was performed on 26 patients. Two patients underwent only liposuction. Results: Twentyâfour patients (86%) were satisfied with the results of the operative intervention. In 24/28 patients (86%), the indication of surgery was cosmetic reasons and in 4/28 patients (14%), the indication was failure to treatment with danazol. Average age of the patients was 24 (6) years and most of the patients were between 20 and 30 years of their age. The postoperative complications include infection in two patients and contour deformity in two other patients. Conclusions: Liposuction combined with subcutaneous mastectomy is a reliable, versatile, less time consuming and valid procedure for the treatment of gynecomastia. This procedure provides satisfactory aesthetic results.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"75 2-3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133054228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tertiary institutions' students are a unique group with very high social interaction, but by virtue of their level of education, probably forms a group in any community, which should have an overall higher level of awareness and use of available methods of contraception, including that of EC. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitude toward EC, and as well to determine the prevalence of emergency contraceptive use among the students of tertiary institutions in Osun State, Nigeria. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study using the self-administered structured questionnaire on questions relating to the socio-demographic characteristics of the students, sexual relations, knowledge of contraception in general and EC, use and determinants of EC use. Results: A total of 384 of the 400 questionnaire were returned of which male respondents were178/384 (46.4%) while the females were 206/384 (53.6%). Two hundred and seven respondents 207/384 (53.9%) were university students, while 177/384 (46.1%) were polytechnic students. Most respondent 142/376 (37.8%) derived knowledge of EC from friends and family life education from school 186/373 (49.9%). More than half of respondents are in sexual relationships, with only 71/384 (18.5%) showing good knowledge of EC. However, use of EC was 106/384 (27.6%). Conclusion: Most tertiary institutions' students are involved in a sexual relationship, have poor knowledge of EC and use of EC also. Formal family life education, partner approval, and previous use of EC encourage further use. There is a need for carefully designed education programs and promotion of family life education with deliberate awareness on safe sex practices, including EC in existing students' health enlightenment programs on campuses.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128279813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, due to the progress in medical methods and management, most women with CHD are expected to reach childbearing age. Noticeable improvement in anesthesia management is important for successful outcome and survival in pregnant patients with CHDs, even with the most complex disease. A multiparous patient, who had two components of cyanotic CHDs, which includes transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and single ventricle (atrioventricular connection) in childhood, got pregnant at the age of 39 years. She had a normal pregnancy course without any specific symptoms. She did not experience functional deterioration during her pregnancy. Termination of pregnancy was decided when intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), was diagnosed by ultrasonography at 37 weeks, and a normal 1250‑g baby was delivered by cesarean section. This case report, records the anesthetic care of the 39‑year‑old female who underwent cesarean section due to IUGR. General anesthesia was successfully administered, with precise attention to maintenance of systemic vascular resistance (to minimize shunting), better oxygenation, administration of pre procedural antibiotics, and judicious replacement of intravenous fluids via air‑filtered tubing.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129488499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of these tumors are unilateral, small in size, and generally occur in premenopausal women. This paper presents a case report of primary ovarian leiomyoma, which is a rare entity, in a postmenopausal female with complaints of abdominal pain. The left ovarian mass was histopathologically and immunohistochemically diagnosed as ovarian leiomyoma. Unlike smooth muscle tumors of uterine origin, there are no definite histological criteria to categorize smooth muscle tumors of ovary. This is an additional case of ovarian leiomyoma with brief review of literature, especially highlighting differential diagnosis of ovarian spindle cell lesions.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115372096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Widespread comprehensive cervical cancer control programs have resulted in a marked reduction in the incidence and mortality in most developed countries. Developing countries bear over 80% of the global burden, with only 5% of the global resources for the control of cancer. Majority of the cases in these countries present late and are incurable at the time of diagnosis. Aim: To review the presentation and histopathological types of cervical cancer cases seen in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Kano, over a sixteen-year period (1995– 2010). Materials and Methods: Case records of histopathologically diagnosed cases of cancer of the cervix were retrieved. Demographic data, stage of the tumor at presentation, and histopathologic type were extracted. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Six hundred and sixty gynecological cancers were seen during the study period, with cancer of the cervix accounting for 58.5% (386/660) cases. Among these cases with cancer of the cervix 71.1% (275/386) were grand multiparous and majority 89.7 % 346/386 presented with advanced disease. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounted for 86.3% (333/386) of the cancers, adenocarcinoma contributed 12.4%,(48/386) and others contributed 1.3% (5/386). Conclusion: Cancer of the cervix is the commonest gynecological cancer at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria.
