This rare and silent presentation highlights the need to reconsider the practice of peritoneal nonclosure during cesarean section that has been adopted widely in recent past. It also calls for meticulous dissection and repair of rectus sheath during laparotomy.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128598280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such diseases include cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis. Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate periodontal diseases as a risk factor for preterm low birth weight infants. Methods: A case‑control study with a selection ratio of 1:1 was performed using 150 cases and 150 controls, who delivered their babies at Vanivilas Hospital, Bangalore, India, over a 3‑months period from January 2012–March 2012. Cases were defined as mothers delivering an infant weighing less than 2,500 gms and born before 37‑weeks gestation. Controls were mothers delivering an infant weighing more than 2,500 gms and born after 38‑weeks gestation. Patients were evaluated for age, socioeconomic status, obstetric risk, nutritional status, maternal morbidity, infections, toxic exposure, antenatal care, infant characters, through hospital records and personal questionnaire by incharge team members. Oral examination was performed using Extent and severity index, Sulcus Bleeding Index. Results: Cases and controls did not reveal any significant difference when compared for age, socioeconomic status, obstetric risk, nutrition, maternal morbidity, and antenatal care. Periodontal disease was more severe and extensive in cases when compared with control and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Bleeding index scores were higher in cases as compared to control and was statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, it is concluded that a poor periodontal health status of the mother may be a potential risk factor for a preterm low birth weight.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122623860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are a heterogeneous group of malignant tumors in which part or all of the carcinomatous epithelium is transformed into a nonglandular component by metaplastic growth process. We report a case of carcinosarcoma of breast. She was a 62-year-old female who presented with complaint of pain and lump in left breast of 6 months duration. There was a discharging ulcer measuring 4 ×6 cm over the nipple of 1-month duration. Computed tomography of chest and positron emission tomography report was suggestive of carcinoma of left breast with left axillary lymphadenopathy and lung metastasis. Histopathology of the tumor was reported as infiltrating duct cell carcinoma (IDC) with angiosarcoma. The IDC was estrogen and progesterone receptor negative and Human Epidermal Growth Factor -2 receptor positive. The angiosarcoma was positive for vimentin, vascular endothelial growth factor, CD34, and CD31. The Ki-67 labeling index was 60% and the epidermal growth factor receptor was positive. This is a case of carcinosarcoma of breast adding to the existing literature.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131416706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies have associated serum calcium with metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and lipids in the general population. Aim: To examine the association of serum total calcium with lipids levels and blood pressure in young Nigerian women who use OCP. Subjects and Methods: Fasting serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, high‑density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‑c), low‑density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‑c), very low‑density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL‑c), total lipids and total calcium were assayed in 160 young women (110 OCP users and 50 controls) using colorimetric methods. Body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure were also measured. Results: Serum triglyceride (1.19(0.01) vs 0.94(0.02), total cholesterol (4.08(0.06) vs 3.52 (0.05), LDL‑c (1.79(0.04) vs 1.24 (0.02), VLDL‑c (0.25(0.02) vs 0.18(0.03), total lipids (7.55(0.2) vs 6.26(0.2), total calcium (2.25(0.01) vs 2.06(0.03), systolic (108.9(0.9) vs 103.1(0.9) and diastolic (67.7(0.7) vs 65.0(0.5) blood pressures were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in OCP users than non‑users. Conversely, HDL‑c levels in OCP users were lower (1.77(0.08) vs 1.84(0.02); P = 0.30) compared with non‑users. Serum calcium positively correlated with blood pressure and lipid parameters except HDL‑c in women OCP users. Women on OCP who had lower serum total calcium levels had statistically significant lower lipid parameters while those women on OCP who had higher serum calcium levels had significantly higher lipid parameters. The BMI of both study population and control was not significantly different. Conclusion: Low‑dose OCPs induce increased levels of serum lipids, calcium and blood pressures. Serum total calcium level was positively associated with blood pressure, measured lipid parameters except HDL‑c in women on OCP. These data suggest that serum calcium may have some influences on lipids and blood pressure in subjects who use OCP irrespective of their BMI.  Keywords: Blood pressure, oral contraceptive pill, serum total calcium, total lipids and lipoproteins","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"430 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133710022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hygiene‑related practices of women during menstruation are of considerable importance, as it has a health impact in terms of increased vulnerability to reproductive tract infections (RTI). Aims: This study aims to assess the hygienic practices during menstruation and influence of socio-demographic factors on menstrual hygienic practices among women of reproductive age-group. Subjects and Methods: It is a cross‑sectional community‑based study conducted among 200 women of reproductive age group (15-45 years) in a rural field practice area, VMKV Medical college, Salem in Oct–Dec 2013 by using simple random sampling technique. Using structured pretested questionnaire, women were interviewed regarding their sociodemographic history and menstrual hygiene practices. Result: Majority of study population, 36% (72/200) belonged to the 21-30 year age group. About 75% (150/200) were married. Majority of women were unskilled workers 35% (70/200), had primary education 43.3% (86/200), and 54.3% (108/200) belonged to lower middle class. The mean age of menarche among the reproductive age‑group women was 13.15 years. Majority of women 51.8% (104/200) used cloth during menstruation; about 45.7% (91/200) used the same cloth by washing and reusing every month. There was a significant influence of sociodemographic factors and hygienic practices during menstruation (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Most women were found to follow unhygienic practices. Hence, efforts such as improving female literacy and health education regarding the various risk factors should be made by the policy makers to increase menstrual hygiene among rural population.  Keywords: Menstrual hygiene, reproductive age‑group women, rural area","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129373472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is characterisized by the occurrence of nodules of mature glial tissues in the peritoneum, omentum and bowel wall. The glial tissue in such cases is usually low grade although there have been cases of malignant evolution described. In general, the prognosis for GP is good. It depends chiefly on the degree of maturity of the implants. In mature GP, usually no additional chemotherapy is necessary. In immature GP, chemotherapy can induce maturation of the implants. We present a case of immature ovarian teratoma associated with low grade GP.","PeriodicalId":356195,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Basic and Clinical Reproductive Sciences","volume":" 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113946113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study used World Health Organization definition “SV is serious public health human rights problem with short‑ and long‑term consequences on women’s physical, mental, sexual, reproductive health. Whether SV occurs in context of intimate partnership, within larger family or community structure, or during times of conflict, it is deeply violating painful experience for survivor.” Aim: The present study was aimed to look into magnitude of SV among married women. Subjects and Methods: It was cross‑sectional study conducted in Rural Institution of Central India. The study subjects were married women, who reported to gynecological out‑patient for some ailments or friends or relatives of patients, mostly from villages. They were interviewed in an area with privacy with pre‑designed questionnaire in local language by social worker and their answers were recorded. Informed consent was obtained and confidentiality was assured. Results: Of 2000 interviewed, 675 (34.7%) had suffered SV. One hundred thirty six (7% interviewed, 20.2% sufferers), reported they were forced to have sex with person other than husbands. Eighteen (1.4%) reported sexual advances made toward them at work places. Thirty‑four (5% of 675) had been forced by their own husbands and/or family members to have sex with other persons, 4 (0.6%) forced to have sex with husbands against their wishes, 373 (55.3%) were subjected to hurting sex, 232 (34.4%) to unusual sex, 26 (3.9%) others were dissatisfied for other reasons. Of all sufferers, 5.3% had reported to police, 451 (61.5%) not spoken to anyone. Most had not sought medical services. Consumption of alcohol/drugs, poverty were reported risk factors. Conclusion: Women continue to suffer SV irrespective of economic class, education. Aims: To study the effects of progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) on the stress levels of PCOS patients and their influence on the cardiovascular risk factors. Subjects and Methods: This prospective pilot project was conducted on 100 PCOS patients in a tertiary care hospital of West Bengal, after receiving approval from the Institutional Ethical Committee and informed consent of the subjects. The stress levels were assessed and conventional autonomic function tests and the lipid profi les were analyzed. The subjects were divided into two groups using an online randomizer. One group received medication, while the other group received medication and practiced progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) for three months. All parameters were re‑evaluated at the end of three months. Results: The perceived stress scale was significantly less in subjects practicing relaxation exercises, as compared to subjects only on medication. The waist/hip ratio, pulse rate, and systolic blood pressure were significantly lower, while there was no difference in the body mass index (BMI) and diastolic blood pressure. Results of the autonomic function tests showed a significant parasympathetic tilt in subjects practicing PMR. In patients with PCOS, who were on PMR, cholesterol, triglycerides, and low‑density cholesterol (LDL) were significantly lower and high‑density cholesterol HDL was significantly higher. Conclusions: PCOS patients are a high‑risk group for developing the metabolic syndrome and relaxation therapies may be recommended as an adjuvant therapy, to tilt the autonomic balance to parasympathetic dominance, to improve the cardiovascular profile.
