Therefore, community-based research on sexuality is often challenging. Considering the paucity of studies on the sexual health of men especially in settings not known for HIV/AIDS, research methods have not evolved adequately. The authors describe the approaches used to discuss sexual health concerns with young men, the challenges faced and the ways in which they were countered. The voices of current and past students at three unique, heterogeneous and diverse field instruction sites in developing South Africa highlight perceptions of varied supervision models, supervisory practices and students’ coping mechanisms when faced with supervision challenges. Insights are provided into challenges experienced by final year students when faced with alleged unethical and unprofessional supervisory practices. The village was awarded the ‘Nirmal Gram Puraskar’ in 2013 in recognition of its ODFV status. The study attempts to review the roles played by various groups, the strategies used and the processes followed to achieve the status of ODFV. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to collect data. This paper is based on an extensive review of articles on the mental health problems of school-going adolescents published between 2008–2017. Based on the inclusion criteria, nine studies out of a total 40 identified studies, were reviewed extensively.
