In order to reduce location update and query cost, the proposed scheme use movement locality. The scheme has the following features: (i) for mobile terminals in neighboring location areas, location update requires a one-hop message exchange, (ii) for the mobile terminal in neighboring location areas, location query requires a one-hop message exchange. Analytical models are set up to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme, and compare it with that of the IS-41 scheme. The measures of comparison used are the communication cost, the database cost, and the total cost. For all these measures, the proposed scheme performs better than the IS-41 scheme. Results also show that for low and high values of CMR, the scheme performs better than the IS-41 scheme.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. This reduces the efficiency of the OFDM transmission. A combined OFDM-equalization transmission strategy is presented in this paper. This strategy employs an adaptive equalizer to combat delay spread distortion instead of a guard interval. This facilitates the use of very short guard intervals and thus the efficiency of the OFDM transmission is improved. This paper presents the combined OFDM-equalization techique and demonstrates the efficiency improvement that it offers over conventional OFDM. The performance of the pre-FFT equalizer is sensitive to time variation of the mobile radio channel's impulse response. Software simulation is employed to analyze this sensitivity and a relationship is determined between performance and FFT size. The results are considered in the context of application to existing and future mobile radio systems.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. It is assumed that the optical channel is an intensity-modulated (IM) channel and a direct-detection scheme is employed to detect the received optical signal. The modulation scheme used is pulse-position-modulation (PPM). From the simulation results, it is shown that turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding/decoding complexity. Also, it is demonstrated that the performance of an optical CDMA system can be substantially improved by increasing the interleaver length and the number of iterations for a fixed code rate. The results in this paper can be applied, for example, to an optical wireless LAN operating in an indoor environment with multiple access applications.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. The objective is to enable efficient transmission of all kinds of ATM traffic in the wireless channel with guaranteed QoS. The proposed protocol utilizes knowledge of the main characteristics of the traffic for allocating bandwidth efficiently to CBR, VBR and ABR/UBR connections by a compromise of assignment, contention, reservation and polling access techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve a very high channel utilization of 90% while providing guaranteed QoS requirements to a variety of ATM applications.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. A soft-output PIC algorithm is followed by a log-MAP receiver for decoding of convolutional codes. An integrated receiver that implements multiple stages of interference cancellation and decoding is presented and evaluated through simulation. This integrated approach is compared with a partitioned approach, where the final stage output of PIC is followed by decoding using a soft-input Viterbi algorithm (VA). Results presented for BER and capacity of the two systems show that both techniques represent a substantial improvement over conventional detection, but the more complex integrated approach provides only a small improvement over the decoupled approach.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. A family of uncoded partial response CPM schemes of different complexity based on the GMSK phase pulse are obtained. The schemes with best minimum Euclidean distance are compared with convolutionally encoded schemes meeting the same spectrum and information bit rate requirements. It is found that for 4-ary CPM there is a coding gain, but the best scheme is an 8-ary uncoded scheme and in most cases there is a coding loss, at least for the studied low memory order convolutional codes.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. In general, three types of cells (layers) can be distinguished. These are picocells (picolayer), microcells (microlayer), and macrocells (macrolayer). The HCS technique is especially suitable if the traffic is generated from different user classes with regards to their average speed (e.g. pedestrians, slow vehicles, fast vehicles, etc.). There are two driving factors: (i) increasing the network capacity, which promotes use of small cells (e.g. microcells); and (ii) decreasing the number of handovers, which promotes use of larger cells (e.g. macrocells). An HCS system has one major impact on the radio resource management (RRM) that is dividing the available radio resources into parts for each layer. The amount of dedicated bandwidth should provide an acceptable quality of service (QoS) for the offered traffic in a particular layer. However, due to the scarcity of the radio bandwidth these resources should be used very efficiently. An interlayer handover is a step forward in achieving higher bandwidth utilization. In this investigation the focus is on the interaction between the macrolayer and microlayer through the interlayer handover procedure.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village.
