The proposed algorithm contains six steps. Firstly, the instantaneous power of the received baseband signal is calculated to remove the frequency offset and data/speech information-bearing signals, while keeping the Doppler frequency information. Secondly, the calculated power signal is filtered using a lowpass linear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filter to suppress interference and noise. Thirdly, the filtered power signal is decimated to ease the computational burden, while the decimation factor is properly chosen to avoid frequency aliasing. Fourthly, autocorrelation values of the decimated filtered power signals are calculated on shifting slot by slot to suppress the \"slot burst frequency\" interference. Fifthly, the calculated autocorrelation values are normalized to suppress the power fluctuation of the received signals. Finally, the normalized autocorrelation values are compared with thresholds to estimate mobile speed. The simulation results indicate that the new algorithm works very well for both non-dispersive channels and dispersive channels to distinguish fast and slow moving mobiles. The method has very low latency, with results being available typically within one second after communication is established, and it can report estimation results every second or less.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. The macrocells accommodate fast mobile users. However, if we direct too many mobile users to the macrocells, the system capacity is low. On the other hand, the microcells are designed to increase capacity, but they cause a large number of handoffs. Our aim is to maximize the system capacity while keeping the amount of handoff small. We minimize the handoff rate by a fuzzy layer selection algorithm which makes use of the past cell dwell times of a user and the channel occupancy of the target cell. To maximize the capacity, we propose a distributed channel assignment algorithm to dynamically allocate the channels among the two layers. Exchange of information is allowed between neighboring macrocells. The state of channel assignment in a macrocell and its interfering cells are tabulated in a channel allocation table, which provides all the information required in the integrated resource allocation scheme. The performance is evaluated by simulation and compared with the popular layer selection scheme known as the threshold method.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. In order to combat the overall interference (ISI+MAI), we propose two efficient joint detection schemes based respectively on zero-forcing and minimum-mean square error criteria. If M denotes the product of the number of active users U and the number of symbols per block N, the computational complexity has been reduced from O(M/sup 3/), of previously proposed schemes, to O(MU/sup 2/), where U/spl Lt/M. In fact, exploiting the asymptotic equivalence between finite-order Toeplitz matrices and circulant matrices, most computation can be carried out very efficiently through an extensive use of DFT and IDFT transforms. Performance results based on the UMTS standard under definition are presented.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. VTC 1999-Fall. We apply a resource management scheme called hierarchical maximal ratio combining (HMRC), where each mobile station (MS) is decoded by base stations (BS) in both layers. We first derive simple analytical solutions for HMRC reverse link CIR performance under different hierarchical settings. Our analytical solutions are verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations and HMRC is proven to be effective in hierarchical settings. It is observed that both macrocell and microcell capacities are nearly unaffected by each other's presence when HMRC is employed.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. FCAC is designed to contain base-station interface module, resource estimator, performance evaluator, and fuzzy channel allocation processor (FCAP). FCAP is a two-layer fuzzy logic controller that consists of a fuzzy admission threshold estimator in the first layer and a fuzzy channel allocator in the second layer. In the fuzzy admission threshold estimator, it chooses the handoff failure probability and the resource availability as input linguistic variables, and applies the Sugeno position-gradient type reasoning method to adaptively adjust threshold values for the fuzzy channel allocator. In the fuzzy channel allocator, it takes the mobility of users, the channel utilization, and the resource availability as input variables, and it intends to enhance the channel utilization by balancing utilization between macrocell and microcells.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. A computer simulation based on the /spl pi//4-DQPSK modulation with square-root raised cosine (SRRC) filter is established for this study. Using digital signal processing techniques and a time-domain approach, we can accurately predict the EVM and the ACPR related to the input power. The nonlinear effects of the MMIC PA are modeled as traditional nonlinearity parameters, such as 1-dB gain compression point or third-order intercept point IP3, by which the EVM and ACPR are simulated. A standard NADC modulated signal from a HP ESG-D signal generator is applied to the MMIC PA and the output signal analyzed by a HP 89410A vector signal analyzer. The measured results agree well with the simulation curves. This shows that the computer program by Matlab is useful to RF/microwave system engineers in the design of power amplifiers for digital wireless communications.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. It is assumed that the communication channel includes frequency selective fading and presents high attenuation in the vicinity of the center frequency of the incoming signal. The broadband interferences are highly overlapping in bandwidth. The direction finding is accomplished by using a group of two-dimensional digital filters which are implemented by spatial and temporal specifications. The required characteristics compensate the highly frequency-dependent attenuation of the received signal and are easily applied to the digital filter design algorithm. The performance of the proposed system is studied by computer simulations and the precision of the estimation is the advantage of the method.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. In that protocol, although it can avoid any collision by using a control minislot, the terminal which generates its talkspurt in the current frame has to wait till the next frame to transmit a request minipacket to obtain reservation. We propose the NC-PRMA with random transmission to idle slot to reduce the mean access delay. We evaluate the mean access delay and the voice packet dropping probability by the theoretical analysis. We also evaluate the total throughput by the computer simulation. It is shown that the proposed scheme attains lower mean access delay than conventional NC-PRMA.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. A new probability density function (pdf) is proposed to describe the statistic of the EVM in an AWGN channel under a frequency nonselective slowly fading situation. The approach of the computer simulation combines the modified Doppler power spectrum (MDPS) method and a gray coding /spl pi//4-DQPSK modulation with square-root raised cosine (SRRC) shaping filter. The results show that the closer the distance between the antenna of the radio and the operator's head, the poorer the EVM and the BER performance of the portable radiophone.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village. Stations are arranged in a straight line shape (line arrangement) or rectangular lattice shape (lattice arrangement), with constant separations. Multipath signals provide an error factor for computing time arrival differences. The location errors of radio sources caused by multipath delays are estimated by means of computer simulations. The results of simulations have clarified that the lattice arrangement can accurately measure radio source location relative to a line arrangement.","PeriodicalId":355729,"journal":{"name":"Gateway to 21st Century Communications Village.
