Power has been a recurring problem in Nigeria in what has been commonly referred to as the electricity gap. The federal government of Nigeria came up with a comprehensive legislation to boost power supply. The implementation of this legislation has led to a partial privatization of the hitherto fully state-owned parastatal that was responsible for electricity generation and supply. The paper examines the outcome of the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA), 2005 on the rate and level of industrialization in Nigeria. It was found that the Act has not, in any way, significantly improved electricity supply in Nigeria. Consequently, Nigerian industries are still groaning under increased cost of production occasioned largely by epileptic power supply. The absence of prepaid digital meters for the billing of many electricity consumers has also worsened the plight of industries that use electricity, and which are forced to pay for electricity supplied under an estimated billing system. The study adopted the doctrinal research approach.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123225745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has left these industries perpetually on their marks and unable to take off so as to compete favourably with their competitors in the global market place. The question of how industries in Africa can improve their competitiveness and hence industrialize the continent has been widely discussed by scholars in the recent past and yet this issue has not been adequately addressed. This paper on value chain management and industrialization in Africa is a qualitative study that addresses the issue of African industrialization with special reference to value chain management. Specifically, this paper reviews how industries in Africa can thrive amidst stiff global competition and the role of value chain management in industrializing the African continent. Through deductive reasoning, the study reviews the role of value chain management in the industrialization of Africa. In conclusion, this paper shed more light on how industries in Africa can leave their marks, take off and compete favourably amidst stiff competition with value chain management pointing out that one of the ways to make African industrialization a reality is to manage the industrial value chain effectively. This study recommends that government and private organizations should help by investing in research and development to help shed more light on innovative ways to improve on value chain management.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129405552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the industrial development plans have so far failed to accelerate the nation’s industrialization, hence the country’s low industrial base which has kept her in the league of developing nations. In fact, Nigeria has in recent times been experiencing deindustrialization, as several industries have collapsed and some others, such as Unilever and Michelin, have relocated to other countries. Several factors are responsible for Nigeria’s low industrial development and they include: inadequate infrastructure (particularly, energy), poor technological base, multiple taxes and levies, and, the shortage and high cost of foreign exchange. Despite a growing body of literature on industrialization in Nigeria, not much has been written about the link between Public Service Reforms and industrialization in Nigeria. This paper examines the links between the implementation of the Service Compact (SERVICOM) Charter and the achievement of Nigeria’s industrial development policies, especially the ‘Ease of Doing Business’ Policy. The paper makes the case that the goal of industrializing Nigeria will not be fully realised without an efficient Public Service. Furthermore, the paper highlights the need for Nigerian public servants to have the right work attitude, and to be morally upright and patriotic, in order to create a business-friendly environment and to build investor confidence, so as to facilitate and accelerate the country’s industrialization and overall national development. The author recommends that the Nigerian government should strengthen the implementation of the Servicom Charter and also incorporate the Charter into the industrialization plan.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130497513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the potentials of the SMEs to accelerate the process of industrialization in Africa have been undermined by numerous constraints, prominent among which is lack of access to finance. The study examined the impact of SMEs financing on industrial growth in Africa using panel time-series data from all the 15 ECOWAS countries from 1986 – 2016. In implementing the panel data regression, the study engaged in panel unit root using the LLC, IPM, Fisher-type ADF and PP tests, and co-integration tests using the Kao residual-based and Johansen- Fisher combined tests. The study also placed adequate control for any unobserved heterogeneity among the ECOWAS countries, using a well-specified fixed effect in exploiting the time dimension present in the dataset. The result shows that SMEs output significantly affects industrial growth positively while the Deposit Money Banks’ credit to SME’s do not have significant impact on industrial performance during the review period. The result further reveals that interest rates have a significant negative impact on industrial growth. Based on these findings, the study recommends that monetary authorities in ECOWAS countries can encourage easy access to finance by making available interest-free loans using microfinance institutions.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128766886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We traced the effort of various Regional Governments, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the African Union (AU) in promoting industrialization in Africa. Industrial development in Africa is still at the primordial level, making Africa depend mainly on primary commodities for export and leading to the reduction in the continent’s share of the global export of manufactured goods, increase in unemployment, and poverty. The study, proffers the argument that regional integration is a veritable instrument for achieving structural transformation and industrial development in Africa. We therefore recommended that the Regional Economic Communities should be reorganized in order to facilitate the ratification and implementation of the regional integration agenda which has direct consequence on sustainable industrialization in Africa.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124897156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Multistage random sampling technique was used to select 300 respondents consisting of 75 Cooperative Leaders and 225 members. A well-structured questionnaire was validated and used to collect relevant data which was analysed using descriptive statistics (the mean and standard deviation). Findings indicate that very few e-learning facilities are available in cooperatives even at secondary and apex levels in the area studied; hence the adoption of e-learning is poor. However, the study revealed that the few e-learning facilities adopted have good effect on the transformative education of the cooperative members. The study also found out that the adoption of e-learning has lots of challenges, including high cost of imported equipment and e-learning facilities; insufficient E-learning infrastructure, inadequate time to develop and implement ICT-using activities, lack of digital learning resources, among others. The study, therefore recommends that specialty training should be given to cooperative leaders to make them keep abreast of the trends in e-learning and they should source for more funds for the improvement of e-learning infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125260430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sometimes, the decision-maker is required to exercise some discretion when making a decision. Here, the decision-maker has a choice about whether to act or not to act; to approve or not to approve, or to approve with conditions. The role of a decision-maker is to make a judgment, taking into account all relevant information. On the other hand, Manpower planning (human capital development) involves investments in education, training, health and other social services that will boost the capacity of labour. It also refers to the process of acquiring and increasing the number of persons who have the skills, education and experience that are critical for the economic growth and political development of a country (Okojie, 1995:44). This study therefore draws insights into the Meaning, Characteristics, Rationale, Assumptions, Types, Bases, Hindrances and Essentials of Decision-making. It also focuses on its Objectives and Importance as well as Manpower Planning Process. This paper is very essential to managers owing to the fact that it reveals ways of attaining national development and industrialization through decision-making and manpower planning.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132230447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Entrepreneurs in various situations need information inputs for planning, implementing, monitoring, financing or reviewing schemes, projects and programs. The purposes for which information is required differ. There may be an immediate need for information to understand the situation an entrepreneur is facing, to convince and persuade others, and to use the opportunities available; or an entrepreneur may gather information to prevent a problem situation arising. This paper also looks at how libraries and librarians can help the entrepreneurs to locate and access information that will aid them in satisfying their information needs in order to compete favourably with their counterparts in other parts of the world.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117258997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship that exists between manufacturing SMEs production and industrial growth in Nigeria. Secondary data was sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Statistical Bulletin and National Bureau of Statistics publications for the period 2002-2016, and regression analysis was used in analysing the data. Findings of the study reveal that manufacturing SMEs’ production has a statistically significant relationship with industrial growth in Nigeria. This implies that manufacturing SMEs are capable of accelerating industrial growth through their contributions to the economy. The study, however, advocates more government intervention by facilitating access to congressional funds for SMEs to trigger SMEs increased contributions to growth and industrial growth in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123978729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is particularly interesting to study the relationship between population growth and industrialization in Nigeria because at present, Nigeria is making rapid effort to advance her economy while undergoing a demographic transition that has been projected to be geometric in nature. This research developed an Auto-regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) model using Index of Industrial Output as the dependent variable and Population growth rate, Birth rate, Total Labour Force (as a percentage of total population that are employed), Capacity Utilization and Manpower Development Index as the independent variables. The data was obtained from the World Bank, the National Population Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletins (various issues). The findings reveal that Population Growth Rate has an inverse relationship with Industrial Output both in the short run and in the long run while Total Labour Force and Capacity Utilization also decrease Industrial Output both in the short and long-run periods. Since the Bounds test reveals a long-run relationship between population and Industrial Output, we recommend a renewed determination and political will to implement the National Policy on Population for sustainable development that outlines a sectoral strategy to manage our rising population.","PeriodicalId":355698,"journal":{"name":"UNIZIK JOURNAL OF BUSINESS","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133818051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
