Support groups could be an effective method against this. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of the children, mothers, and school nurse regarding bullying and support groups. This study is a qualitative exploratory design case study, with interviews of the participants. Individual interviews were conducted with the bullied child, two mothers and the school nurse and focus group interviews were had with seven boys in the support group. The bullied boy coped better after receiving help from the support group, his family and the school nurse. We found that working together as a team is important to prevent bullying, and the school nurse reported being happy to have the support group as a tool.","PeriodicalId":354264,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Child Health","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114807888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Management strategies aim to reduce symptoms and prevent sudden death, and include daily medications and lifestyle modification. Children spend a large proportion of their time at school. The responsibility for monitoring and responding to symptoms, ensuring medication regimes are adhered to, and providing life-saving treatment in the event of collapse is assumed by non-medical professionals. Strategies to support non-medical professionals within schools, plus health-care professionals, such as school nurses who may have little experience caring for affected children, should be employed to ensure they are well informed about the condition and its management. Affected children should be supported to achieve their full academic ability and should not be limited unnecessarily or disadvantaged as a result.","PeriodicalId":354264,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Child Health","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130250020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An estimated 800 000 teenagers in the UK have asthma. This figure could be higher as teenagers can have undiagnosed asthma ( Siersted et al, 1998 ; BTS/SIGN, 2019). A person-centred approach to all aspects of care is central to supporting adolescents to self-manage their asthma and therefore minimise concerns around morbidity and mortality. School nurses have a key role in communicating strategies that support self-management, and the use of tools can be helpful.","PeriodicalId":354264,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Child Health","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127370839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is growing global concern about increased sexual activity among younger children and related discussions about how families address sex education in the home. The purpose of this study was to identify determinants of parents’ communication about sex with their primary school-aged child/ren. The study employed a cross-sectional design for UK parents with at least one child aged 5–11 years using an online questionnaire which incorporated validated scales. A total of 205 parents participated with a total of 405 children. Parents with more than one child were more likely to have had a conversation with their child about sex and were more confident in talking about the reproductive process and healthy sexual relationships. Parents with the confidence to engage children in conversations about sex can support targeted risk behaviour, pubertal development and sexuality.","PeriodicalId":354264,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Child Health","volume":"265 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132911930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiences from the point of view of school children is important to improve services. The methodology followed several steps. First, an expert panel (n=8) selected items based on earlier questionnaires used in healthcare. Second, cognitive interviews with children (n=25) were performed to adjust items to be understood by school children. Finally, the questionnaires (n=144) were distributed and compared. After adjustments to items in both questionnaires the pilot study indicated overall high satisfaction, but there are differences between age groups, where younger children are more positive than older children. Involving children to evaluate and improve SHS is an important consideration. In future studies, such questionnaires need further development to increase the sensibility and reveal further insight.","PeriodicalId":354264,"journal":{"name":"British Journal of Child Health","volume":"36 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129351789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
