This work aimed to analyze the local ecological knowledge of fishermen about the biology and ecology of the fish species used as bait on Fernando de Noronha (state of Pernambuco - PE) to support the planning of the local activity. Data collection was carried out through interviews with semi-structured scripts containing questions about the socio-economic profile of the fishermen and the biological and ecological aspects of the species used as bait. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, seeking to represent a consensus among the informants and to compare the local ecological knowledge with the scientific literature through the method of comparative cognition and the hypothesis test. Sixty-nine fishermen were interviewed, using false herrings (Harengula clupeola) and mackerel scads (Decapterus macarellus) as their main bait fish, in still fishing and fishing using boats. The hypothesis test, applied to the mentioned results by more than 30% of the fishermen, showed a high degree of agreement between local ecological knowledge and the scientific literature, revealing detailed knowledge of the fishermen on the biological and ecological aspects of false herrings and mackerel scads. Catching bait fish on Fernando de Noronha proved to be extremely important, both for the relationship with artisanal fishing and for the maintenance of local knowledge and culture. The results obtained in this research should foster a very much-needed dialogue between fishermen and those responsible for managing conservation units to create legal and effective mechanisms to meet the demand for bait fish used in commercial fishing and to maintain a sustainable artisanal fishing model for Fernando de Noronha.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132907328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To reduce costs, different materials have been studied, for example, rice husks (RH). RH is an abundant, low-cost residue of the agricultural sector and can be used to generate energy due to its high calorific value. However, burning husk generates waste, the ashes. Thus, the objective of this work was to optimize the synthesis of activated carbon using pre-carbonized RH with different chemical agents as activators (KOH, NaOH, NaCl, H₂SO₄, and Na₂CO₃), at different particle sizes. Subsequently, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the materials. Of these, KOH was the best activating agent. The adsorption kinetics for the adsorbents was 30 min, reaching equilibrium after 70 min. Of the three fitted kinetic models, pseudo-second-order and Elovich best fit the data. The FT-IR shows that the adsorbents have oxygenated surface groups such as alcohol, ester, ether, and phenol. From the point of zero charge, the predominance of negative charges on the surface of the adsorbents is observed. Therefore, the activated carbon from rice husk ash (RHA) showed potential in the adsorption of the methylene blue dyes.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115627378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent toxic substances (PTS) that can be air transported at urban sites and impact human health, causing skin allergies, respiratory diseases, and cancer. Macaé is a southeastern Brazilian coastal city that had an intense process of urbanization and population growth due to the installation of oil companies in the 1970s. The study aimed to evaluate Macaé's air quality regarding atmospheric PAH occurrence, measured using polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS). PUF disks were deployed along environmental gradients during the 2018–2019 spring/summer in Macaé city and its surroundings. In total, 22 individual PAHs were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Total PAH air concentrations ranged from 0.3 to 3.3 ng.m-3, pointing out three- to four-membered ring compounds as the most abundant (76%). Among them, phenanthrene, anthracene, and fluoranthene had the highest air concentrations, especially at sampling sites where fossil fuel combustion seemed more prominent. Compared to other cities worldwide, the lower PAH air levels reported in this study may be linked to the influence of marine air masses. As the most carcinogenic PAH compound is benzo[a]pyrene, the results are also given in benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent (BaPeq). BaPeq ranged from 0.02 to 0.10 ng.m-3. This study indicated an environmental trend along urban-industry-background spatial transects. Even though a prominent marine air mass might contribute to efficient air pollution dispersion, in urban/industrial areas, human exposure to carcinogenic chemicals is higher, probably due to local PAH sources inside the urban perimeter of Macaé.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"08 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123454324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vriesea incurvata is an epiphytic tank-forming bromeliad endemic to the Atlantic Forest, being an important species in gallery forest environments. Seeds of V. incurvata were germinated in vitro, and plants were acclimatized and translocated to each of two microhabitats (gallery forest and forest interior) of an Atlantic Forest fragment in South Brazil that harbors few individuals of the species. The 152 plants (76 per microhabitat) were monitored for survival and development, and abiotic data were recorded. There was increased development of morphometric parameters of the plants in the gallery forest, and survival rate ensured an 800% increase in the original population of V. incurvata in the study area. Plant survival and development parameters were positively related to light and relative air humidity. In gallery forest, plants flowered and set fruit, indicating their relationship with pollinators, since V. incurvata provides food for fauna. Further, the establishment of the individuals increased the availability of water in the canopy by accumulation in the rosettes, as well as the complexity of the canopy structure, providing a site for the occurrence of detritivorous, predatory and herbivorous arthropods. Thus, based on the method applied to V. incurvata, inserting epiphytic species into forest environments can be an efficient tool for artificial habitat regeneration, incrementing functional diversity and improving environmental quality.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126112900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To control excessive pressure, WDNs are commonly divided into district metered areas (DMAs) with pressure-reducing valves (PRVs). The energy wasted by PRVs can be recovered using pumps as turbines (PATs). However, selecting the appropriate pump remains a challenge, as it must account for daily pressure and flow variations from consumers (off-design conditions). In this article, a combination of models was validated and applied to select the suitable pump for operating in an actual WDN. The replacement of two PRVs with PATs in a real network, previously divided into two DMAs and operating at constant speed was investigated. Economic and environmental analyses were also conducted. PAT1 was technically superior to PAT2, as PAT2 exhibited negative outlet pressure, affecting the pressure in DMA2. Optimal efficiencies are achieved at flow rates corresponding to the pump’s best efficiency point or near it, mimicking pressure control as if they were the valves themselves. The most efficient pump recovered 4,331 kWh/year, equivalent to a reduction of 1,732,400 gCO2/year, serving two households categorized as low-income. PATs proved to be a viable alternative, with a payback period of 2.1 years, as it can recover renewable energy. However, for effective pressure control in WDNs, other operational strategies, such as variable speed operation, should be explored.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128516375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likewise, these activities can cause significant changes in the chemical and physical factors of the soil, also impacting the microbiological community. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of soil biochemical and physicochemical characteristics on the development of fungal communities in three different soils of the Pampa biome. The soil types selected were: native forest, Eucalyptus plantation and pasture area, in two distinct periods: hot and cold. Microbiological, physicochemical and biochemical analyses of the soils were carried out. The following genera and species of fungi were identified:Aspergillus sp., Aspergillus niger, Fusarium sp., Geotrichum sp., Isaria sp., Penicillium sp., Scedosporium sp., Trichoderma sp., Verticilliumsp. The results showed that the fungal community is being affected by soil composition characteristics, regardless of the sampled areas. Aspergillus sp. is associated with higher amounts of manganese, boron and the Ca+Mg/K ratio in the soil, while A. niger and Trichodermasp. have a negative relationship with these variables. Aspergillus sp. showed a high ability to tolerate Mn. The most diverse area was pasture in the warm period, and the least diverse was Eucalyptus plantation in the cold period. The analyzed taxa had a reduction in the cold period compared to the warm one, except for Aspergillussp. in the Eucalyptus area, which presented a greater amount in the cold period compared to the hot period. It can be seen that the use of soil in the Pampa biome for planting monocultures or for generating pastures interferes with its characteristics and distinctly affects the fungal community.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130746875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with the approval of a new legal framework, consumers began to pay for using the electricity distribution system, resulting in a direct impact on the electricity market. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of such a new regulation on the economic feasibility of distributed generation systems for residential facilities, which are the most representative consumers. For this purpose, the approved energy tariffs for the utilities are analyzed in detail, as well as the impact on the cash flow of systems installed in the vacancy period of the law. Five distinct scenarios are assessed, considering econometric parameters and a thorough comparison with traditional fixed-income investments available in Brazil. The study shows that there is no common pattern for the adoption of electricity tariffs, while the new regulation varies according to the tariff type in the regions most impacted in the country. Even with the decrease in attractiveness, one can state that the systems are still viable in all the analyzed scenarios, even without a smooth transition between the regulations. Finally, it is strongly recommended that new systems are installed as soon as possible associated with proper energy management in consumer units, while prioritizing energy consumption during peak generation periods.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126298253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The public hearings that make up the environmental licensing process and that represent a space for direct popular participation have proven to be inefficient. This work aims to capture the impressions of public opinion regarding popular participation in decision-making, both about public practices of environmental management and about environmental licensing. The data were collected in the second half of 2020 through a questionnaire prepared through Google Forms and disseminated on social networks according to a virtual sampling technique called “snowball.” The sample was composed of 59 individuals, mostly from Rio Grande do Sul (88%). The respondents feel excluded from the licensing process and the actions to protect the environment where they live, showing interest in being more participatory, both by adding information about the region where they live and by assisting in enforcement within their neighborhoods. Most of the public consulted considers that the dissemination of information about public actions and the need to acquire knowledge about the functionalities of environmental licensing are essential to ensure a more effective participation of the population in the formulation of environmental protection policies. It is concluded that direct participative democracy is still deficient due to the low adhesion of the population, whose engagement depends on factors related to environmental education, the availability of information, and the simplification of forms of democratic participation that are closer to the citizen.","PeriodicalId":352759,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Ciências Ambientais","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115314127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This reflects the need for selecting appropriate areas for the disposal of this type of waste. These areas must follow local standards and regulations to protect human health and the environment. Considering that, this study is intended to indicate potentially suitable areas for CDW landfill deployment, known as Class A landfill in Brazil, supported by a GIS-MCDA based model. The GIS-MCDA technique, used as a basic tool to identify potentially suitable areas, has several advantages, such as low cost, reduced spatial data subjectivity, and fast decision-making process.
