Several requirements need to be fulfilled to reach this long-term goal. One requirement is a common information base, where all road participants are fully aware of each other. The idea of collective perception contributes to this common information base by sharing local sensor data with other road participants. Whereas most related work focuses on the aspects of sensor data fusion, we focus on the implications of an ETSI ITS G5 based network for collective perception. We present and analyse different message formats and dissemination variants for sharing sensor data. Their usability is validated in an extensive microscopic simulation study. In particular, implications caused by Decentralized Congestion Control as proposed by standardisation are assessed in a constrained environment with hundreds of vehicles.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115791409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although common vehicles accidents have been reduced in the last years, those involving vulnerable road users remain. Cyclists and motorcyclists cover a whole area where ITS and telematics should be embedded with no doubt, given the incremental popularity of bikes and motorbikes in urban mobility and short interurban routes. For this reason, this work takes the key objective of integrating two-wheelers within the future cooperative ITS network. Hence, a novel communication device especially adapted to cyclists and motorcyclists has been designed, by integrating vehicular wireless communications (i.e. IEEE 802.11p) and considering interface limitations. From the protocols perspective the work is focused on IPv6, and considers two-wheelers as part of the Future Internet. In fact, a great success of the proposal is exploiting the synergy between IETF (Internet) and ITS-specific protocols coming from ISO and ETSI, creating a novel active system to improve two-wheel transport safety through Cooperative Awareness Messaging (CAM) over IPv6. The embedded communication node for two-wheelers includes the proper software to warn the driver about the approaching of a regular vehicle through audio and visual notifications. Moreover, its counterpart for common cars has also been developed, but using an Android application running on a handheld device connected to a regular IPv6 in-vehicle network.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126385406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These sensors and connectivity capabilities create opportunities for innovative applications for flow control, route planning, and road safety. Such applications rely on up-to-date data transmitted by the vehicles to analyze real time road and driving conditions. Due to the time-sensitive nature of these data, it is important to identify and understand connectivity characteristics that impact vehicle data sharing and communication, including both vehicle-to-vehicle communication through DSRC and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication through cellular channels. We present MOdular VEhicle SEnsor Technology (MOVESET) — a low cost vehicle sensor package that allows independent research groups to create datasets of vehicle sensors readings correlated with measurements of cellular and DSRC connectivity. We also present a dataset of measurements conducted in September of 2016 on an interstate and rural highways along the Bozeman, MT, Billings, MT, Red Lodge, MT, Bozeman, MT route. We hope that the MOVESET sensor platform and the presented dataset will make it easier for the research community to design and evaluate data integration applications for connected vehicles.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125966050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a set of new standards in development by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) defined to support mixed criticality based on Ethernet technology. This technology has recently raised significant attention of automotive domain. However, the mutual influence of application requirements in relation to TSN standards still remains a complex problem to master. For instance, considering an existing complex automotive network, an engineer has to carefully analyze the possible effects of adding new sensors on other existing critical applications. The network has to be configured such that the fulfilling of all requirements is verified. Targeting this problem, a modeling approach based on Logic Programming (LP) is developed to support more efficient configuration and verification process with focus on in-vehicle TSN networks.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114677074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One particular scenario of interest is when the communication link is between two vehicles located across a corner at an intersection in an urban setting. In this scenario, the direct communication link is obstructed by an obstacle/building and is expected to be of low quality. We propose agile vehicle-assisted relaying in which the transmitting vehicle exploits the help of a nearby vehicle, often inside the intersection and can see both the transmitting and receiving vehicles, to convey its message to the receiving vehicle. We use simulation to study reliability performance of the proposed communication scheme and compare it to the traditional direct transmission communication. We show that the proposed vehicle-assisted scheme substantially improves reliability for communication between the considered transmitting and receiving vehicles compared to direct transmission.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"365 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122316436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, formal models of threats have the potential to give rise to numerous benefits: they can help in the understanding of vulnerabilities (and the communication of such); they also provide a means by which these vulnerabilities can be reasoned about. We give consideration to how formal models of threats might be beneficial in the development of modern automotive systems and vehicular networks, which are increasingly interconnected. To achieve this we present a formal threat model of an idealised system. We use Predicate/Transition (PrT) Nets, a graphical mathematical formalism, to represent threats and plausible attacks. In addition to understanding and analysis, the approach also has the potential to provide benefits to the design and testing of vehicles' distributed IT systems — thus contributing to an improved sense of security, privacy and safety. To this end, we give consideration to the challenges that lie ahead in terms of adopting such an approach.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127236103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we investigate the impact of these antenna patterns on the outcome of a city-wide simulation with hundreds of cars as well as an isolated intersection collision avoidance scenario. We show that in both cases pronounced differences can be observed: Compared to idealistic isotropic antennas, using realistic antennas changes the distribution of angle of arrival, affecting network topology dynamics. In collision avoidance applications, the antenna radiation pattern can make the difference between a crash and a successful emergency brake, strongly indicating that antenna characteristics should find more consideration in vehicular network simulation.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122159189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the volume of messages that are received and rebroadcasted via the relay vehicles can cause broadcast storms and network jams. In this paper, we propose a selective message relaying algorithm to enable efficient information sharing of multi-hopping VANETs. The proposed algorithm is very general so that it can be applied to many real-world applications. We use a clustering mechanism to group messages that include the same or very similar information, and the number of clusters is adaptively varied based on the proximity of the messages. Supported by the clustering mechanism, each relay vehicle only rebroadcasts a few messages from each cluster. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm reduces 75% message rebroadcasting but still keeps 98% environmental awareness on average. It can support trade-off analysis between design metrics and assist in future system-level design.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122256319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications are paramount to cooperative awareness and safety applications, and must be protected. In recent years, a lot of research has been focusing on vehicular communication security and privacy. Current ITS communication security functionalities include message authentication, which has an impact on the privacy of vehicles and drivers. At the European level, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has defined a message authentication mechanism based on a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). In order to serve a huge amount of ITS Stations (ITS-Ss), the Vehicular Public Key Infrastructure (VPKI) has high scalability requirements. To the best of our knowledge, so far no one has investigated the VPKI scalability in large-scale deployment. In this paper, we present the first extensive measurement campaign of a fully functional ETSI-compliant PKI. In our measurement campaign we assess PKI performance and scalability, replicating the system on hundreds of machines. In particular, we evaluate different replication strategies in terms of performance and consistency implications.","PeriodicalId":352428,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference (VNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126143048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
