The population in this research was 1<sup>st</sup> semester students of Physical Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, the University of Dehasen Bengkulu, in Academic Year of 2022/2023. Sampling used was random sampling with a sample of 90 people who were students of class A1, A2, A3. Data collection techniques employed triangulation using questionnaires, interviews and observations. The research method was a descriptive research with research data using qualitative data. The data analysis technique used using a Likert scale to obtain questionnaire data to determine student’s learning persistence based on indicators on the instruments that have been compiled, and then the data obtained will be changed into percentage data. The results show that the average level of learning persistence for students in online learning assisted by English module media for English general course (MKU) students after the spread of the Corona virus and entering an endemic period based on the fractional indicator was not delaying work completion time (81.9), always take advantage of opportunities (80 always trying to succeed in carrying out tasks (81.1), never satisfied with the results obtained (76), always want to try more challenging jobs (76), always dream and wake up from dreams (80), Work according to top priority (80), Able to solve problems (75,8), Connect with friends who are active (73,8), therefore the average indicator learning persistence and problem solving ability for students is 78.2. From these results it can be interpreted based on the scale range of criteria for interpretation of the score of the respondent's achievement level, thus the interpretation of learning persistence for students in online learning with the help of English module media in general English courses is strong.</p>","PeriodicalId":35166,"journal":{"name":"Scope","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136184239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, pronunciation tends to be neglected by instructors in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes, especially for vowel sounds. Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is one of the alternative methods in enhancing students’ ability in pronunciation. PRAAT is software used to measure the quality of students’ pronunciation. They were able to enhance their pronunciation practice by using the visual spectrogram. The purpose of this research was to determine the efficacy of employing CALL in pronunciation classes. The numbers of students in this research were 30 Acehnese EFL students. The methodology was quantitative through experimental research. A Word list was used as an instrument to obtain data from the learners. Based on the results, there was a significant improvement after the learning process. The learners had difficulty with five significant mistake sounds: [e], [ei], [i], [e], [e]. They recognized these sounds as monophthongs. This inaccuracy was caused by unfamiliarity with English diphthongs, because these sounds did not found in L1 and L2. After a few repetitions, the students began to use more diphthongal and higher F1 and F2 sounds. Hence, it can be concluded that the CALL had a positive impact in enhancing the student’s ability in pronunciation.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":35166,"journal":{"name":"Scope","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136184244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from 15 student essays and four raters with master's degrees in English education. The Many-facet Rasch measurement (MFRM), automatized by Minifac software, a program created for the Many-facet Rasch measurement, was used for data analysis. This was done by meticulously dissecting the assessment process into its distinct components—raters, essay items, and the specific traits or criteria being evaluated in the writing rubric. Each rater's level of severity or leniency, essentially how strict or lenient they are in assigning scores, is scrutinized. Likewise, the potential biases that raters might introduce into the grading process are carefully examined. The findings revealed that, while the raters used the rubric consistently when scoring all test takers, they varied in how lenient or severe they were. Scores of 70 were given more frequently than the other score. Based on the findings, composition raters may differ in how they rate students which potentially leading to student dissatisfaction, particularly when raters adopt severe scoring. The bias in scoring has highlighted that certain raters consistently tend to inaccurately score items, deviating from the established criteria (traits). Furthermore, the study also found that having more than four items/criteria (content, diction, structure, and mechanic) is essential to achieve a more diverse distribution of item difficulty and effectively measure students' writing abilities. These results are valuable for writing departments to improve the oversight of inter-rater reliability and rating consistency. To address this issue, implementing rater training is suggested as the most feasible method to ensure more dependable and consistent evaluations.</p>","PeriodicalId":35166,"journal":{"name":"Scope","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136184247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Butler argues that cultural norms and power structures shape individuals’ gender identities and render them inherently vulnerable to external influences. By applying Butler concepts to the stories in Kartini: Princess of Java, the article asserts that the characters not only conform to gender norms to gain recognition but also face vulnerability due to her position within societal structures. This research carried out in a qualitative framework. The analysis explored how the character performed gender roles and the implications of her actions in the social realm. The findings show that Kartini’s performative acts involves breaking free from the normative scripts assigned to women of her time. She confronts gender expectations through her outspokenness, challenging practices like early marriages and polygamy that perpetuate inequality. Her advocacy for women's education is a performative act that aims to disrupt the conventional roles of women and to open new possibilities for their empowerment. This performative activism is intricately intertwined with Kartini's vulnerability. She shares her inner struggles, aspirations, and conflicts, transcending the boundaries set by her society. Her vulnerability becomes a catalyst for social change, inspiring other women to join her cause and challenge existing norms. Kartini's willingness to embrace her vulnerability demonstrates authenticity and sincerity, making her advocacy relatable and impactful.</p>","PeriodicalId":35166,"journal":{"name":"Scope","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136184253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

News is a media platform for sharing information. However, due to the journalist’s background, news can be unfair in delivering the topic. Therefore, critical discourse analysis plays a vital role in examining the true meaning of the news article. One of the current issues regarding Indonesian tourism is the development of Komodo Island. This study aims to analyze how news article from foreign media portray this issue by analyzing how the discourse structure and ideology is organized in the text by applying the theory of discourse structure, such as text structure, social cognition, and social context. The data source for this study was an ABC.com news article with the headline “Indonesia’s Jurassic Park-Inspired Tourist Attraction Worries Komodo Dragon Fans.” This study used a descriptive qualitative method with documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques. This study finds out that text structure is divided into the macrostructure, superstructure (five sub-topics), and microstructure consisting of semantic (background, details, goals, presupposition, numerical), syntactical (sentence form, pronouns, coherence), and rhetoric (brackets, dash, letter type, images, quotation mark). In English academic writing classes, incorporating OBE principles presents challenges, particularly in the realm of assessment. The assessment process must effectively evaluate all abilities, skills, and knowledge specified in the learning outcomes. These challenges are further amplified by the large class sizes, resulting in suboptimal assessments of students' writing abilities. Therefore, Project Based assessment that aligns with OBE principles and assists academic writing lecturers in addressing the complexities of providing quality assessments to a multitude of students in Indonesia is of utmost significance. The Proposal Writing Course Universitas Wijaya Putra, consisting of twelve students from the English Department, utilizes the OBE-Project-based assessment method. This study aims<strong> </strong>to describe the students’ composition as the learning output based on the writing rubrics assessment. The analysis of the student’s proposals revealed a notable enhancement in various aspects, including the context, literature review, research design, and data. It is found that Project Based assessment that aligns with OBE principles significantly enhances their research writing skills and improves their academic achievement throughout the research process. analysis.
