These three finals have regular correspondences in Tibetan and Burmese. The Trans-Himalayan proto-language distinguished *-n, *-j, *-r, *-l, and *-rl. Burmese loses *-r and generally loses *-l, except after -u-, where it changes to -y. Tibetan loses *-y and changes *-rl to -l. Chinese changes *-rl to *-r. Because Burmese shows different reflexes for *aj (-ay) and *əj (> -i), the merger of *ə and *a in Tibetan and Burmese are independent innovations; and this merger does not confirm a ‘Tibeto-Burman’ subgroup (contra Handel 2008). These correspondences require confirmation through further research on evidence of *-r in the Min dialects and Han dynasty Buddhist transcriptions from Indic languages in Chinese characters.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"43 1","pages":"91-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/19606028-00432P02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64470177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four different syntactic constructions are identified which are used to indicate different information status of elements in a noun phrase, all involving two full NPs with either overt or covert heads. Discourse particles play a crucial role, not only for the interpretation of information structure, but also as anchoring points for boundary tones. Otherwise, intonation and prosody are not affected by word order changes, with the exception of optional pauses after or before dislocated constituents. Cet article examine la structure de l’information des syntagmes nominaux discontinus en Cantonais, ainsi que leurs proprietes syntaxiques et intonatives. Quatre constructions syntaxiques distinctes ont ete identifiees qui servent a exprimer des roles specifiques de structure de l’information sur des parties de syntagmes nominaux. Ces roles impliquent deux syntagmes nominaux complets et independants l’un de l’autre, avec des tetes prononcees ou non. Les particules discursives jouent un role essentiel, non seulement pour l’interpretation de la structure de l’information, mais aussi pour l’ancrage des tons de frontiere. L’intonation et la prosodie ne jouent aucun role en dehors des pauses facultatives avant ou apres les syntagmes discontinus. L’intonation n’est pas affectee par les changements d’ordre des mots.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"43 1","pages":"110-143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/19606028-00432P03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64470189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phonological, comparative, and historical data is provided to support this claim. The discussion addresses Vietnamese, Chinese, and Tai historical phonology and the language contact among these three groups. Dans cet article, nous montrons que le mot vietnamien pour ‘râteau/herse’ appartient a la couche parlee des emprunts sino-vietnamiens anciens datant d’avant la dynastie des Tang. Des donnees phonologiques, comparatives et historiques corroborent cette hypothese. It expresses not only the internal composition of an event (event transition: event → EVENT), but also the temporal relation between the topic time (TT) and the time of situation (T-SIT). That is to say, the temporal relation between TT and T-SIT imparts a full interpretation to the meaning of lɛɛw. The interaction between T-SIT and TT allows various possible aspectual interpretations such as inchoative, completive, perfective, and perfect. Cet article propose une nouvelle analyse du marqueur lɛɛw en thai. Nous montrons que lɛɛw possede des proprietes aspectuelles et temporelles. Ce marqueur indique a la fois la composition interne d’un evenement (une transition entre deux evenements: event → EVENT) et la relation temporelle entre le temps de l’assertion (TT) et le temps de la situation (T-SIT). Autrement dit, la relation entre le TT et le T-SIT permet d'expliquer completement le sens de lɛɛw. L’interaction entre le T-SIT et le TT s’ouvre a differentes interpretations possibles, y compris les aspects inchoatif, completif, perfectif et parfait.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"43 1","pages":"39-67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/19606028-00431P03","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64470607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The documented history of more than a thousand years allows us to trace changes in the language over time. This study looks at the divergent Mon varieties spoken today in Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand respectively, both influenced to different degrees and in different domains by the dominant national languages, Burmese and Thai. The study brings together insights from areal linguistics and history, painting a picture of the development of Mon in the two countries and its changing structure. Le mon a ete depuis longtemps en contact avec les langues dominantes que sont le birman et le thai. Une documentation historique de plus d'un millenaire nous permet de suivre l'evolution de cette langue a travers les epoques. Cette etude s'interesse aux varietes divergentes de mon parlees aujourd'hui en Birmanie et en Thailande respectivement, toutes deux influencees a des degres divers et dans des domaines differents par les languges nationales dominantes, le birman et le thai. Cette etude s'appuie a la fois sur la linguistique areale et l'histoire afin de brosser un tableau du developpement du mon dans ces deux pays et de son evolution structurelle.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"06 1","pages":"77-117"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/19606028-00422P01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64470424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examine five sets of nominal demonstrative attested in the Southern Min dialect of Hui’an, in terms of their syntactic functions, their semantic features and their pragmatic uses. These demonstratives, which may involve syllable fusion, are marked for number, and also for type and genericity. In terms of pragmatic uses, they have not only an exophoric use, but also anaphoric, recognitional, discourse deictic, and other uses.Cet article clarifie tout d’abord les termes “demonstratif” et “determinant demonstratif”, et ce qui les differencie du terme chinois zhǐshi daici 指示代詞. Nous examinons du point de vue syntaxique, semantique et pragmatique cinq series de determinants demonstratifs du nom attestes dans le dialecte min du sud de Hui’an, dont certains peuvent provenir d'une contraction syllabique. I argue that the typologically rare V2 elision is the default type of elision in Eastern Old Japanese. In contrast, V1 elision in Eastern Old Japanese is only attested in those cases where the vowel sequences [ia] or [ua] are found in hiatus. For that reason, I argue that the trigger for V1 elision is a maximal increase in sonority from V1 to V2. Cet article traite des phenomenes d’hypermetricalite et d’elision synchronique des voyelles dans des contextes de hiatus dans la poesie en japonais ancien de l’Est, attestes notamment dans les livres 14 et 20 de l’anthologie poetique Man’yōshū. Il est montre que l’elision de V2, typologiquement rare, est le type d’elision par defaut en japonais ancien de l’Est. En revanche, l’elision de V1 en japonais ancien n’est attestee que dans les cas ou les sequences vocaliques [ia] ou [ua] apparaissent dans des contextes de hiatus. Pour cette raison, il est montre que l’elision de V1 est due a une augmentation maximale du degre de sonorite de V1 a V2.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"42 1","pages":"2-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/15685322-0421P0002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64461901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that the aspectual meaning and function of -chu differ from those expressed by the continuative aspect marker -teiru, and that these differences may be accounted for by the semantics of -chu. When suffixed to a verbal noun, -chu can only denote a temporary or a momentary activity, whereas -teiru can also denote an habitual and regular activity. When denoting a resultative state, -chu, unlike -teiru, implies a right boundary, and marks the state as temporary. Finally, unlike -teiru, -chu highlights the momentary nature of the event or state in question, so that, depending on the context, it can trigger the readings of ‘opportunity to be seized’ or ‘temporary prohibition’. \u2029\u2029Nous montrons ici que l’aspect exprime par le suffixe sino-japonais -chu ‘en cours de’ differe de celui marque par la forme en -teiru (marqueur d’aspect continuatif), et que ces differences sont dues au semantisme du suffixe -chu. Quand il suffixe un nom verbal, -chu n’exprime qu’une activite temporaire et momentanee, alors que -teiru peut egalement marquer une activite habituelle et reguliere. L’etat resultant exprime par chu est borne a droite et considere comme temporaire, a la difference de l’etat resultant marque par -teiru. On constate egalement avec -chu un phenomene de saillance liee a la nature temporaire de l’intervalle, qui donne naissance suivant le contexte a diverses interpretations  d’occasion a saisir, ou au contraire d’interdiction provisoire d’acces, qui le distinguent aussi de -teiru.","PeriodicalId":35117,"journal":{"name":"Cahiers de Linguistique Asie Orientale","volume":"42 1","pages":"33-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1163/15685322-0421P0003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64461908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
