To ensure optimal DCVs routing, we propose a hierarchical control framework that consists of local switch controllers providing switch position instructions and a supervisory network controller. The routing control problem for the network controller is a nonlinear optimisation problem with high computational requirements. Therefore, we present an alternative approach for reducing the computational complexity by approximating the nonlinear optimisation and rewriting it as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. The advantage is that for MILP problems solvers are available that can efficiently compute the global optimal solution. The MILP solution is then used for computing optimal switch control actions. For a benchmark case study we compare the hierarchical route control with previously developed switch control approaches. Results indicate that the proposed hierarchical control offers a balanced trade-off between optimality and computational effort.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.038311","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through this way, all production data in manufacturing fields can be obtained in real time, and it improves the flexibility and responsivity to the changing market for the companies. However, at the same time the RFID deployment also introduces a new challenge which requires an effective and efficient method to handle the large amounts of events. This paper proposes an application framework for a real-time Complex Event Management System (CEMS) based on RFID equipments deployment. With the use of Complex Event Processing (CEP) technologies, this system allows users to obtain interested and meaningful information from large numbers of primitive events captured from the RFID devices deployed in manufacturing shop-floor in real time. This paper presents the RFID deployment infrastructure first, and then system design of the CEMS is proposed.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.038313","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exact solution methods can only be used for very small instances, hence for real-world problems we have to focus on heuristic methods. In recent years, researchers have started to apply evolutionary approaches to this problem, including Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary Programming. In this paper, we propose a Hybrid Genetic Algorithm (HGA) to solve 1-D BPP. We compare our approach with algorithms given by Scholl et al., Alvim et al. and Kok-Hua et al. Then we discuss the performance of the approach. We show that giving at least the same performance on term of quality solution, our HGA approach outperforms these algorithms on term of computational time. This performance is due to new mechanisms of hybridisation of genetic algorithms and local search.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.038315","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In most cases, one studies the optimal order quantity that maximises the expected revenue. In some cases, one determines the expected cost itself, but never the associated risk. In this paper, we study the standard deviation of the expected cost for two classical models (including or not salvage revenue) and for three classical distributions (normal, uniform and exponential). The formulas can be drawn with any spreadsheet program and the student can evaluate the expected revenue and the risk associated with any ordering value. To illustrate the proposed formulas, numerical examples are given.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.038317","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main features that characterise the global supplier selection are first identified. They mainly include the necessity of integrating inventory and transportation issues and considering several buyers' sites. We then show that supplier selection models that simultaneously consider all these features are missing in the literature. Hence, we propose a two-phase global supplier selection approach: a first pre-selection phase with a scoring method and a final selection phase using a mathematical optimisation model. Finally, we perform different computational experiments based on a case study in order to illustrate the consistency of the model and to analyse some relevant managerial situations such as those related to the selection of low-cost suppliers.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"138-159"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.038323","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To demonstrate the model, we focus on Visakhapatnam city as a case study, for allocating the patrolmen to various road segments in different shifts within the patrolling region. The city road segments were divided into (a) city-link road segments; (b) intra-city road segments; and (c) by-pass road segments. In this study, different goals such as total patrolmen, minimum shift requirement, total budget, estimated accident reduction and accident rate reduction in high accident-prone areas are considered. By considering these goals, four cases are formulated to allocate the patrolmen in each road segment and to each shift. In case 1, minimisation of all these goals is considered. Allocation of patrolmen in high accident-prone areas and accident rate reduction goals are minimised in case 2. Minimum shift requirement goal is considered in case 3. In case 4 total budget goal is considered.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"273"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.045557","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A customer leaves the system either after the first required service with probability (1 – θ ) or immediately goes for a second optional service with probability θ after the completion of the first required service. For this queueing model, it is rather difficult to obtain the steady-sate probability explicitly. We apply the maximum entropy approach to approximate the system size distributions by using the first and second moments of the system size. Accuracy comparisons between the two approximate solutions are conducted. Numerical results indicate that using the first moment approach is more accurate than using the second moment approach.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"310"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.045561","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these defective items can be removed from the lot through a screening process. Thus, the inspection of lot becomes essential, especially when items are deteriorating in nature. Further, in today’s uncertain global economy, due to rising inflation there is a consequent decline in the real value of money, which eventually forces the supplier to provide an attractive tradecredit policy to the retailer. Keeping this scenario in mind, an attempt has been made to formulate an inventory policy for a retailer dealing with imperfect quality items of deteriorating nature under inflation and permissible delay in payments. Results have been demonstrated with the help of a numerical example and sensitivity analysis is also presented to provide managerial insights into practice.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"6 1","pages":"292"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2011.045560","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even large manufacturing firms are seeing dramatic shifts in percent revenue derived from services. The growing dynamism of the automotive sector, the enlargement of markets, the changes in the strategic position of suppliers, the introduction of new rules and the diffusion of the internet have great impact on manufacturer's after sales configuration. Considering the complexities in Automobile Service Centre (ASC), a model is developed for the variables affecting the performance of ASC and studies the interrelationship among the variables. Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) is used as tool for the present study and structural relationship model has been developed. Driving elements are also found using MICMAC analysis. The present research provides innovative business models for product service system design. The study will help the managers of ASC in developing the policies for improvement in performance of ASC.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"5 1","pages":"351-372"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2010.037003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Product Extension Services (PESs) are essential ingredients in various servitisation strategies. As the business of PESs grows quickly, it is imperative to develop a formal conceptual model. Thereby, this paper investigates an ontology-based approach for representing information and semantic knowledge of intangible PESs. A general knowledge representation scheme, called PESO, is hierarchically developed. At the lower level, a meta-ontology is defined where agreed terms and vocabulary are explained explicitly. The concepts and relations in the ontology are elicited from empirical research. The process ontology in OWL-S is reused by using ontology import mechanism. A precise and formal representation based on OWL is also provided. The resulting PESO provides a common semantic foundation for meaningful representation and knowledge exchange across multi-disciplinary teams and heterogeneous systems. A specific PES called 'Building Solution' is finally illustrated to demonstrate the potential of PESO.","PeriodicalId":35046,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Services Operations and Informatics","volume":"5 1","pages":"373"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1504/IJSOI.2010.037004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66743078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
