Overheated brakes may cause failure of the braking system and, as a result, lead\u0000to a car accident. Heat dissipation during operation helps to cool the braking system and prevent overheating.\u0000The article presents two patented brake pad structural solutions – anisotropic and ventilated brake pads –\u0000designed to boost the effectiveness of heat dissipation. The tests described in the article were performed\u0000using the T-33 inertia dynamometer developed at the Łukasiewicz – Institute for Sustainable Technologies in\u0000response to a demand presented by a Polish brake pad manufacturer. As part of the tests, various functional\u0000properties of the newly-designed and classic brake pads (i.e. the friction coefficient, the temperature of the\u0000brake pad, and the wear of the brake pad and brake disc) were compared.\u0000From the tests it follows that the new pads with the heat dissipation system have an advantage over classic\u0000pads, depending on the method of brake pad’s material and structural modification.\u0000\u0000

Nevertheless, the influence of the substrate surface roughness is\u0000related to the coating type and substrate material and the used deposition method. Therefore, the effect\u0000of the surface roughness of a structural steel substrate on the mechanical properties of a PEEK coating is\u0000ambiguous. The indentation tests conducted show that, at a specific load of the indenter, the roughness of the\u0000steel substrate surface does not significantly affect the Vicker’s hardness of the tested PEEK coatings. The\u0000average Vicker’s hardness and elastic modulus are approximately 300 MPa and 5.6 Gpa, respectively, at the\u0000lowest of the applied loads, regardless of the surface roughness level of the steel substrate. Nevertheless, the\u0000surface roughness of the steel substrate after fine grinding of Ra = 0.21 μm, compared to the polished one with\u0000Ra = 0.005 μm, meant that adhesion improved, and the scratch hardness increased by approximately 130 to\u0000370 [MPa] of the PEEK coating.\u0000\u0000
