Consumable\u0000electrodes differed in the content of carbide-forming elements, and pad welds were deposited onto the S235JR\u0000structural. The CE tests, conducted according to ASTM G32 standard, indicated that hardfacings reveal\u0000lower mass loss than the reference stainless steel AISI 304 (X5CrNi18-10). The hardfacings show increasing\u0000resistance to CE in the following order: Cr-C < Cr-C-Mo < Cr-C-Mo-V-W. The reference steel revealed more\u0000than twenty times higher material loss in the CE test than Cr-C-Mo-V-W hardfacing, which had outstanding\u0000hardness (825HV0.3). The profilometric measurements and scanning electron microscopy investigations\u0000showed large changes in valley and peak sizes of the roughness profiles for materials which displayed high\u0000erosion rates. The erosion mechanism of the coatings can be classified as brittle-ductile and relies on cracking,\u0000chunk removal of material, pits and craters formation, and deformation of fractured material tips and edges.\u0000Hardfacing materials failed primarily due to brittle fractures with different severities. The matrix of the composite consists of GJL-150 grey\u0000cast iron used for the production of brake discs. The reinforcing phase is a SiC foam with an activated surface.\u0000The use of ceramic foam simplifies the production process because it does not require expensive mixing of\u0000the matrix and the reinforcing phase to ensure the homogeneity of the composite. An addition of 10% SiC\u0000(λSiC=100-350 Wm-1K-1) improves the thermal conductivity of cast iron (λCI=50-60 Wm-1K-1). The presence of\u0000foam elements homogenously distributed throughout the whole matrix volume reduces the wear of both the\u0000composite and the counter-sample. The results of comparative studies of contacts between the cast iron and\u0000the composite brake disc showed almost a threefold lower wear of the pad and disc and about a 10°C lower\u0000temperature in the pad near the friction zone under the pressure of 1 MPa and at a sliding velocity of 0.5 m/s.\u0000The significantly lower wear of the friction elements of the brake system will contribute to a reduction in\u0000environmental pollution by wear debris, which is required by European Union directives.\u0000\u0000

The unique\u0000properties of this type of seal are very low torque friction, high tightness, and almost unlimited durability.\u0000These parameters are also expected for seals that operate in a water environment. This article presents the\u0000results of a magnetic fluid seal's maximum (critical) velocity operating in a water environment. The scope of\u0000the investigation included an analysis of parameters such as the pressure of the sealed water and the properties\u0000of the magnetic fluid. Two independent parameters, such as the pressure change and the torque change of the\u0000seal, were used to determine the leakage. The results showed that the best performance was obtained for the\u0000fluid with the lowest dynamic viscosity. In addition, the water pressure had a significant effect. The tests were carried out using a TRB3 ball-on-disc tribometer using a 6mm-diameter\u0000SiC ball as a counter-sample for a specimen made of GX120Mn13 cast steel containing a localised prehardening\u0000area on the test surface with a hardness of approximately 597 HV10 (the non-hardened area had a\u0000hardness of approximately 325-364 HV10). During the test, the ball travelled in a 16.68 mm diameter circle\u0000and passed through both hardening and non-hardened areas. The resulting erosion marks were assessed using\u0000an optical profilometer and scanning microscope tests, which showed that the maximum depth of erosion in\u0000the previously hardening area was 0.77 μm and was more than twice as deep as in the non-hardened areas\u0000surveyed. The literature\u0000on the subject was analysed in terms of greases into which hexagonal boron nitride was added. Particular\u0000attention was paid to the nano h-BN, due to the topicality of this topic and the potential of nano-additives to\u0000lubricants noted in published scientific studies. It was found that in order to indicate the regularities describing\u0000the tribological interaction of hexagonal boron nitride, detailed studies and an analysis of its properties are\u0000required. The important factors determining the application of this additive include particle size distribution,\u0000morphology, specific surface area, and porosity. The mentioned properties were determined for four samples\u0000of hexagonal boron nitride, which were also objects of tribological experiments. For this purpose, a scanning\u0000electron microscope (SEM) and XRD method were used, and low-temperature adsorption isotherms were\u0000determined. The research on the influence of h-BN on the lubricity properties of lithium grease was carried\u0000out on a four-ball apparatus. Possible mechanisms of interaction of different types of h-BN in the friction\u0000zone were identified using the information collected on their important properties.
