Governmental and non-governmental organizations are developing and strengthening plans to improve Infection and Prevention Control (IPC) programmes. To date, three models for nursing practice have been developed in Italy. In addition, significant epistemological reflections have been published, sparking a rich professional debate regarding the theoretical foundations of nursing in Italy. However, conceptual models from other countries are often still used, despite many difficulties associated with applying them in practice. In order to investigate and redress this 'theoretical gap' and related implications for intervention, three scoping reviews of the Italian nursing literature were conducted to examine three categories of nursing knowledge: (a) nursing practice in Italy; (b) the basic nursing concepts of person, health, environment and nursing; and (c) regulatory/normative statements regarding what nursing practice should be in Italy.

Aim: The purpose of this investigation was to identify how nursing is conceptualized in the Italian literature through an integrative narrative analysis of three scoping reviews.

Methods: The Scoping Review according to the recommendations published by Arksey and O'Malley and subsequently implemented by Levac et al. has been selected as the optimal methodology for mapping nursing knowledge. At the end of the reviews carried out to answer the three research questions, the researchers integrated the results by conducting a coding of the results.

Results: The narrative synthesis highlighted a systemic conception of persons in their social context, 'incorporated' within relational systems. Persons are imagined as active agents with self-determination toward promoting their own health. Health, derived from levels of equilibrium between multiple systemic components and based on the person's holistic view, is a fundamental right and a collective social interest. Maintaining or promoting a person's health requires careful consideration of all these constitutive and integral elements. The nursing process is implemented through technical acts as well as relational and caring skills. Professional autonomy, influenced by clinical and organizational contexts, is expressed in collaboration with other professionals who contribute to the healthcare process. The results of this integrative narrative analysis suggest the need for a holistic vision of persons, with an active role in their health management, indissociable from the system of relationships in which this is contextualized, within which nurses are embedded.

Conclusion: In light of the results of our investigation, the promotion of a conceptualization of nursing based on the centrality of the person-social relational system and on the active role of persons that nurses work with, this could guide approaches used in nursing education and administration. This could help enhance care provided by nurses and persons' participation in dec","PeriodicalId":34911,"journal":{"name":"Professioni infermieristiche","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39332186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the law, the discussion on these procedures is still open in many countries, including Italy. Therefore, it is important to investigate the opinion of health care workers.

Methods: A questionnaire was designed and administered to nurses working in two hospitals in Milan, with the aim of investigating their opinion and working propensity in the context of assisted suicide. The instrument has undergone a preliminary validation process to in order to asses its psychometric properties.

Results: The opinions of the sample (n=430) were mostly in favor of assisted suicide and euthanasia; however, as regards \"propensity\", only a small majority was in favor or very much in favor of working in contexts where the procedures described above were practiced, with increase in undecided and in those against.

Discussion: According to the Italian law in force, anyone participating in assisted suicide or euthanasia procedures would be prosecuted by law; this implies that healthcare professionals do not have direct knowledge of assisted dying procedures and could be an explanation for the large numbers of undecided respondents in the last questions of the questionnaire. In spite of the limitations of the survey carried out, consisting mainly in the limited sample and in the monocentric design, the opinion of the staff seems to be largely in favor of the patient's freedom of choice; it is likely that similar percentages are justified by a deep-rooted direct experience in a general situation where the assistance that can be provided to the patient is not sufficient.
","PeriodicalId":34911,"journal":{"name":"Professioni infermieristiche","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"39862925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
