This topic is an important supplement to the findings concerning the Polish anthroponymy, because, as historians claim, these names, which have a nickname character (e.g. Placzybabka, Marionek, Fiolla, Goniwiecha), later became official surnames. The personal names are shown in the context of the functioning of the social group of the eighteenth- nineteenth-century craftsmen, in particular, the role of guilds in the training of young professionals and the associated customs are shown. The social names are the proof of the existence of rites of passage in Polish guilds and a relic of ancient rites of initiation.","PeriodicalId":34847,"journal":{"name":"Socjolingwistyka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46695765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of this problem showed the necessity to take into account the categories of honorification in the study of both the image of a politician — a populist leader, as well as linguistic relations created by him. The subject of the analysis is a populist political discourse which we analyze from a political and linguistic perspective. The article presents honorification created at the systemic, interactive and sociolinguistic level. The confirmation of the assumptions made is the analysis of Pawel Kukiz’s texts, which showed that the politician consciously uses grammatical and lexical means of honorification in order to build his social and political role and the role of other participants in political communication.","PeriodicalId":34847,"journal":{"name":"Socjolingwistyka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41433878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is a place in it for the dialect of the Kielce area (there is an action set in there). The article examines linguistic indicators of dialect stylization and the stereotype of dialect in popular literature. The author skilfully presented the features of the real dialect (phonetic, inflectional, word-form and lexical level), at the same time she wrote them into the literary stereotype of the dialect. Interesting is the manner of introducing dialectal vocabulary that has been adapted to the linguistic habits of the heroes. Examining the attitude of the heroes to the dialect, placing this variety in a specific cultural context, we can recreate the social stereotype of dialect in contemporary Poland.","PeriodicalId":34847,"journal":{"name":"Socjolingwistyka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42122497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines two open-ended questions of the survey: 1) what is the main motivation of foreigners for learning Polish (from the point of view of native speaker); 2) whether the fact that foreigners speak our language provides any real benefits to us. The respondents realise not only practical, market but also symbolic value of language. In students’ opinion language gives a huge insight into culture and tradition, it is considered to impact on image of the country and its economic development. The attitudes of the students towards language seemed to be related to some degree with their field of study.","PeriodicalId":34847,"journal":{"name":"Socjolingwistyka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43496296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consistent with this idea is conceptualising LL research as a diachronic process. In this study, we explore the LL of George Town, Penang (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is filled with evidence of historical changes from the past until its current state. A unique characteristic of George Town is its blending of different languages, which are displayed on shop signs and can be traced back to the late 18th century. To understand the social and historical changes that have taken place in George Town, data was gathered from several resources, including personal narratives by shop owners and historical artefacts such as postcards, books and brochures obtained from the heritage centre. A geosemiotic approach is adopted to categorise, analyse and interpret the subsequent collection of shop signs. In terms of the materiality of signs and their linguistic content, the findings reveal that old shop signs from the British colonisation period were engraved on wooden board and mostly written in Chinese or English. After Malaysia’s independence, metal signboards and non-standard Malay was used. In 1975, several Malay terms were changed, and shop owners started using Modern Standard Malay on signs. Currently, shop signs are more multimodal, colourful, and most likely made of polycarbonate. More recent signs also light-up at night. Through a diachronic examination of the LL, we reflect on how phenomena such as globalisation and technological innovation are progressively impacting on the nature of George Town’s shop signs, and the materiality of these signs.","PeriodicalId":34847,"journal":{"name":"Socjolingwistyka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45594789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
