Das nur wenige Kilometer nördlich von Longyearbyen auf der anderen Seite\u0000des Adventfjords gelegene Advent City war die erste Steinkohlemine auf\u0000Spitzbergen, die ganzjährig in Betrieb war und bereits fünf Jahre\u0000nach der Aufnahme der Arbeiten aufgrund mangelnder Profitabilität wieder\u0000aufgegeben wurde. Während Teile der Siedlung seit über hundert\u0000Jahren dem Verfall überlassen werden, wurden viele der Gebäude schon\u0000kurz nach der Aufgabe der Bergbautätigkeit an anderer Stelle\u0000wiederrichtet und stehen größtenteils heute noch an ihrer neuen\u0000Position. Neben den Überresten von Gebäuden und technischen\u0000Installationen vor Ort sowie den noch erhaltenen Holzhütten, haben sich\u0000eine ganze Reihe von historischen Photographien erhalten, die uns ein sehr\u0000genaues Bild der Siedlung zeigen. Aus den unterschiedlichen Quellen wurde\u0000ein vollständiges 3D-Modell von Advent City entwickelt, das die\u0000britische Mine zum Zeitpunkt ihres Betriebs Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts\u0000zeigt. Dieses Modell wurde anschließend in eine Virtual Reality\u0000Anwendung überführt, welche dem Nutzer das immersive Erleben der\u0000Siedlung erlaubt. The Antarctic Treaty, successfully negotiated and signed\u0000in 1959, entered into force after ratification by the 12 original signatory\u0000countries in 1961. Under the Antarctic Treaty, research activities are now\u0000carried out in Antarctica by 54 countries. These are 29 consultative and 25\u0000non-consultative parties. Radio communications have always been an important\u0000part of all scientific activities in research stations, ships and aircraft\u0000in Antarctica. Historic expeditions in the 19th century and early 20th\u0000century had to use wired telegraph stations after returning from\u0000expeditions. Between 1911 and 1913, Wilhelm Filchner and Douglas Mawson were\u0000the first Antarctic expedition leaders to explore the possibilities of\u0000wireless telegraphy. Mawson succeeded in establishing radio communications\u0000from Antarctica to Australia for the first time in 1912. Today, the use of\u0000communication technologies is almost taken for granted. Direct amateur radio\u0000communications via shortwave are a flexible backup and an effective addition\u0000to communications about the Antarctic. On the occasion of the 60th\u0000anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, a major international radio activity\u0000was launched in the second half of 2021 with which an important contribution\u0000to communication to the public was made. Nine girls from Austria, Germany and Italy joined science instructors\u0000specializing in glaciology and meteorology, two professional artists (an\u0000actress and a painter), and a professional mountain guide for an all-female,\u0000week-long expedition to Bachfallferner glacier in the Ötztal. The team\u0000learned basic mountaineering and climbing skills, conducted scientific\u0000experiments including measuring the daily melt rate of Bachfallferner\u0000glacier, and pushed their creative boundaries.
