This paper was initiated by a multidisciplinary Topic\u0000Workshop in the frame of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft Priority Program 1158 “Antarctic\u0000Research with Comparative Investigations in Arctic Ice Areas”, and hence it\u0000represents only the national view without claiming to be complete but is\u0000intended to provide awareness and suggestions for the current discussion on\u0000so-called big data in many scientific fields. The importance of the polar regions and their essential role for the Earth\u0000system are both undoubtedly recognized. However, dramatic changes in the climate\u0000and environment have been observed first in the Arctic and later in\u0000Antarctica over the past few decades. While important data have been\u0000collected and observation networks have been built in Antarctica and the\u0000Southern Ocean, this is a relatively data-scarce region due to the challenges\u0000of remote data acquisition, expensive labor, and harsh environmental\u0000conditions. There are many approaches crossing multiple scientific\u0000disciplines to better understand Antarctic processes; to evaluate ongoing\u0000climatic and environmental changes and their manifold ecological, physical,\u0000chemical, and geological consequences; and to make (improved) predictions.\u0000Together, these approaches generate very large, multivariate data sets,\u0000which can be broadly classified as “Antarctic big data”. For these large\u0000data sets, there is a pressing need for improved data acquisition, curation,\u0000integration, service, and application to support fundamental scientific\u0000research. Based on deficiencies in crossing disciplines and to attract\u0000further interest in big data in Antarctic sciences, this article will (i)\u0000describe and evaluate the current status of big data in various Antarctic-related scientific disciplines, (ii) identify current gaps, (iii) and provide\u0000solutions to fill these gaps.\u0000

Science communication is becoming increasingly important to connect academia and society and to counteract misinformation. Online video platforms, such as YouTube, allow easily accessible communication of scientific knowledge to audiences made up of the general public. In April 2020, a diverse group of researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, launched the YouTube channel called “Wissenschaft fürs Wohnzimmer” (translated to “Living Room Science”) to stream scientific talks about climate change and biodiversity every Thursday evening, with the aim to reach a broad range of members of the public with a general interest in science and climate. Here we report on the numbers and diversity of content, viewers, and presenters from 2 years and 100 episodes of weekly livestreams. Presented topics encompass all areas of polar research, the scientific and societal aspects of climate change and biodiversity loss, and new technologies to deal with the changing world and climate of the future. We show that constant engagement by a group of co-hosts and presenters representing all topics, career stages, and genders enables the continuous growth of views and subscriptions, i.e. a measurable impact. After 783 d, the channel gained 30 251 views and 828 subscribers and hosted well-known scientists, while enabling especially early-career researchers to foster their outreach and media skills. We show that interactive and science-related videos, both live and on-demand, within a pleasant atmosphere, can be produced alongside the main research activity by scientists, while also maintaining high quality. We further discuss the challenges and possible improvements for the future. Our experiences will help other researchers conduct meaningful scientific outreach and push the boundaries of existing formats towards a better understanding of climate change and our planet.\u0000

Germany has been operating permanently crewed research stations in\u0000Antarctica for more than 45 years. The opening of the Georg Forster Station\u0000(1976) and Georg von Neumayer Station (1981) initiated a period of\u0000continuous environmental monitoring that allowed both the former East Germany and West Germany to become contracting parties in, and achieve consultative status with, the framework of the Antarctic Treaty. This marked a milestone in German polar research. Continuous research at the Neumayer Station III, its two predecessors, and the now-dismantled former German Democratic Republic (GDR) Georg Forster Station is undertaken by teams of so-called “overwinterers”, presently with nine members, who stay at the base for longer than an entire Antarctic winter. Their long-term stay in Antarctica is defined by isolation, separation from civilization, routine work to sustain long-term scientific observations, and unique personal experiences.
