This paper emphasizes that a divorce therapist can still use a systemic approach with an individual who seeks help even without the luxury of the family's presence in-session. Case vignettes serve to illustrate how a clinician can create new and more productive realities for the newly divorced client during early therapy, mid-therapy, and late therapy. The structural-strategic orientation suggested culminates in a single case study which links theory and technique with actual practice.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129449212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following a history of the movement, the author discusses differences between mediation and marital and family psychotherapy. The different types of mediation services currently being offered are described. Mediation is evaluated in terms of who uses the services and factors affecting utilization; the effectiveness of mediation; client, dispute, and mediator factors related to mediation success; and client satisfaction. The limitations of mediation, as well as its promise, are also delineated.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122301329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nature and functions of sibling relationships are first discussed in light of current research and family theory. This theoretical background is used to support the notion that sibling relationships are not only affected by divorce, but can also be an important resource in helping children through post-divorce adjustment. Several case studies are presented which provide support for this perspective. Finally, suggestions are made for the clinician interested in applying knowledge about siblings in the family therapy setting.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114699109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Availability of self-help programs based on artificial intelligence expert systems for most family needs normally provided by professionals, and the use of home computers as a new communications medium will give families broad new powers in the emerging information society and change significantly their relationship to services providers, including psychotherapists. The nature of this new relationship is examined, including problems caused by computer use, as well as opportunities created by computers for both families and psychotherapists.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121802525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have difficulty keeping up with the literature and, oftentimes, determining the relevance of that literature to practice. One approach for dealing with this problem is to teach therapists a systematic process for selecting, reviewing, and translating information into practice guidelines. These guidelines can then be transferred to a computerized decision support system which can be used in a consulting role. As practice guidelines are modified and new ones added, the data base will be able to support more sophisticated types of practice decision-making.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121922170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, few of these tools have been systematically integrated into clinical practice. Some of the major obstacles that have limited the clinical use of these inventories are the difficulty in administering, scoring, printing, and storing these data. Microcomputers can, however, help overcome some of these problems. With the increasing availability of microcomputers, these inventories can now be more readily introduced into clinical practice. This paper will describe some of the advantages of using microcomputers for couple and family assessment. A variety of self-report inventories that are currently available on microcomputers will be briefly reviewed. A comprehensive marital assessment tool called ENRICH will be described to illustrate the type of information that a computer summary can produce for therapists.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126225103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
