Five key areas that the therapist and his or her clients should recognize will provide a foundation for understanding the responsibilities and potential legacy of the cohabitation. By design, this paper should contribute to the avoidance of the costly and unpleasant resort to legal suit. An appended list of 28 legally-oriented items should be considered at the outset of cohabitation.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"28 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130362054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ritual life of contemporary American women is described and the need to alter, enrich, and develop new rituals more expressive of the tasks and transitions faced by women today is argued. The relationship between ritual and therapy is developed as it is demonstrated that ritual can be mobilized as a powerful instrument in therapy. Examples from practice illustrate that women, in family of origin work and conjoint family therapy, can be helped to challenge and reshape their ritual lives.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"44 46","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120839689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Viewed from this perspective, the author argues that Family Systems Theory is not contextual enough, and that much can be gained from beginning to seriously explore the circular interrelatedness of patriachal society and the functioning of particular families.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126204451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Possible biases in the definition and/or application of the terms \"enmeshment\" and \"fusion\" are elucidated through examination of gender differences in individual development, of the socially determined structure of the contemporary family, and of the social context of inequality. Following redefination and validation of women's relational skills, implications for theory are briefly discussed.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-03-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124009689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
