In the family field, potential applications range from simple computer simulations of standard paper-and-pencil measures to sophisticated new assessment techniques using computer graphics or interactive dialogue. The development of effective new CAA tools is facilitated by consideration of interrelationships between technical design issues and questions of family measurement and theory. General guidelines for design of CAA systems are discussed and specific examples of working CAA programs are presented.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122867498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper begins with a theoretical discussion of the uses of the micro-computer in teaching systems psychotherapy. This discussion includes the limitation of the computer as well as its disadvantages. Next some applications are demonstrated on the micro-computer that have been developed specifically for systems psychotherapists. Finally, the latter section speculates on the future potential of the micro-computer. Overall it is argued that the micro-computer can extend the therapist's ability to understand and creatively teach about systems and the family.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126106858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mail survey to a convenience sample primarily in the Washington, DC, area, plus in-depth interviews, a literature review, a technology assessment and professional networking served as complimentary methods for data collection. The results focus attention on two areas which are generally foreign to the community of therapists: the marketplace and management training. Concluding recommendations outline steps that therapists, educators, and system and software developers might take in reducing the barriers to microcomputer technology utilization.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132731634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program identifies both problem areas and strengths of a relationship by collecting information on clients, analyzing it, organizing it into a useful format, and making it easily retrievable. Information is gathered from clients in 108 different categories considered relevant to marriage. Specific information is collected about each individual and his/her marital values. In addition, the program collects information from each concerning how the partner is perceived and what type of person would be considered the \"ideal\" marriage partner. The computer then analyzes the relationship utilizing all of this information, as well as a marital therapist ideal based on values associated with successful marriage. From this analysis the computer predicts problem areas in the marriage, areas in which the marriage is especially satisfying, and identifies areas in which the client...","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131753957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem was to design a system which would be flexible enough to allow therapists to communicate accurately about their cases as they move between faculty supervisors with diverse theoretical backgrounds. The system was designed to be acceptable to therapists and allows them to enter most of their notes in English prose. Coded entries are kept to a minimum. The system is considered a minimal data system with the gathered material limited to information which is useful in making critical clinical decisions. Information is organized around a Client Data Base, a Treatment Plan which consists of a Problems, Goals and Interventions List, and Progress Notes. The system is also useful for administrative reports and clinical research.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125317990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It discusses the risks to both long-term alcoholics who have grown old with their drinking problem and the issues facing those persons for whom the risks of alcohol become apparent in later life. Three cases are included to illustrate the different consequences of alcoholism in the family as it impacts on separate members and generations within the family system. Authors discuss some principles of intervention and prevention that can and should be applied by different mental health and health practitioners that work with older persons and their family groups.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the evaluation process, the clinician must diagnose both the patient's problems and the family dynamics with regard to the symptomatic presentation. Development of the therapeutic alliance for the entire family and resolution of potentially destructive psychodynamic interactions among family members are the essential work of treating an older adult with a psychiatric illness. Such a family-oriented approach provides the highest probability of a good outcome of treatment.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123389899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
