Major stress points for such children—the separation/divorce (breakup of the nuclear family household) and the remarriage of the parent/s—are placed within the broad framework of pre-divorce, divorcing, and post-divorce stages. Primary attention clinically is given to the major issues for children of divorce: loss and reactions to continuing marital discord.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130329184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clients are at different points along the marriage-divorce-remarriage continuum when they first come to the center, but typically are highly dissatisfied with their present situation, whether that be their marriage or the aftermath of their separation or divorce. The center's goal is to help clients resolve the immediate crisis, and to assist them in recognizing and changing problematic behavior patterns. Services offered include short and long term counseling and therapy, educational programs, and divorce mediation.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124413743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They relate to acceptance of the end of the marriage, functional post-divorce relationship with the ex-spouse, emotional adjustment, cognitive understanding of the divorce, social support, parental adjustment, children's adjustment, use of opportunities for learning and personal growth, and general life adjustment and physical well-being. A study validating the criteria is described. The paper suggests that some divorces are clearly more constructive than others and therapists can utilize these criteria both to establish goals for therapy and to clarify values and therapeutic priorities.","PeriodicalId":347940,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychotherapy and the family","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123292149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
