At the beginning of the 1970s, the journal published more and more often about the social position of women. The subject of women’s activities in the public sphere, including political activity, intensified. It depended on the changes in the country’s political scene and personnel changes at the Kobieta i Życie editorial office. The issue of women’s low participation in politics was particularly often addressed in the 1975 editions. On the occasion of the International Year of Women, the Kobieta i Życie editors encouraged readers to become involved in the political sphere. The silhouettes of Polish political activists as well as women publicly active outside Poland were presented many times.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42235104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Chodakowski family belonged to this group. Zofia and Jadwiga Chodakowski were involved in the Lithuanian national revival movement since their childhood. After graduating from middle school, Zofia married Antanas Smetona. The couple lived in Vilnius. In their apartment the most important activity centre of Lithuanian in the city was created. Jadwiga went to study in St. Petersburg, where she met Augustinas Voldemaras. Then she became a lecturer at a college. During the German occupation of Lithuania, Antanas Smetona became the chairman of the Lithuanian State Council (Taryba). At the end of World War I, Jadwiga Chodakowska returned from Russia and was engaged in the diplomatic service of the Lithuanian state. When Antanas Smetona became President, his wife Zofia (Sofia Smetonienė) became the First Lady. Jadwiga (Jadvyga) married Juozas Tūbelis, who was the prime minister of Lithuania since 1929. In the 1930s, the sisters Sofia and Jadvyga were the most influential women in Lithuania. They caused, among others, the fall of Augustinas Voldemaras’ career. Many people accused them of abuse of power. In 1940, Sofija Smetonienė and Jadvyga Tūbelienė, together with their husbands and other families, left Lithuania and took refuge in the USA, where they lived until the end of their lives.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44314682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I will analyse articles posted to the magazine in the years 1860–1915, i.e. since its takeover by Gregorowicz until the end of its existence. In the second half of the 19th century, the press more and more frequently wrote about women and the issues concerning them. This was undoubtedly related to the increase in women’s activity and the development of the emancipation movement. American women, fighting for their rights in various spheres of life, played a significant role in this respect. The issue of gender equality was also valid in Poland. Contemporary publicists noticed the need of women’s education, especially – practical education and the necessity of taking up professional work by women. “Tygodnik Mód i Powieści” selectively informed about: the development of women’s movement in the USA, American women’s fight for political rights, women’s education, taking up jobs in professions previously reserved for men and involvement in creating women’s clubs. Many American initiatives were not approved by the weekly’s editors, who insisted that they should not be transferred to Poland. Yet, the need for changes and concessions in some areas of life was recognized.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44476487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The leading authors of the peasant thought appreciated the importance of information and propaganda in publicising and popularising it, especially during electoral campaigns, but not only. Using the analysis of the content of peasant magazines, one can determine ways of using the press in the course of political and electoral struggle. Journals of the peasant parties were actively involved in political agitation. The subject of the analysis in this article will be the following press organs: “Zielony Sztandar” [Green Banner] published by Stronnictwo Ludowe [People’s Party] and the “Piast” weekly published by the Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe “Piast” [Polish People’s Party “Piast”], as well as related to Stronnictwo Ludowe, a journal of Związek Młodzieży Wiejskiej [Rural Youth Union] – “Wici” [News] and “Chłopskie Życie Gospodarcze” [Peasant Economic Life] in which issues of the role and participation of women in political life will be analysed. The time turning period covers the years 1931–1939, i.e. the period from the unification of the peasant movement and the merger of the three largest groups Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe “Piast”, Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe “Wyzwolenie” [Polish People’s Party “Liberation”] and Stronnictwo Chłopskie [Peasant Party] on 15 March 1931 and the foundation of Stronnictwo Ludowe until the outbreak of World War II.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46527968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the one hand, her research aims at characterising those MPs taking into account such criteria as age, education, profession, political orientation as well as membership in political groups and circles. The other aspect of the research concerns the areas of their activity in selected parliamentary committees, the parliamentary questions they submitted and the subjects raised by them in parliamentary speeches. The author seeks, if only partially, to fill the gap in most recent studies of women’s history in the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PPR).
