Depending on the era, the expectations of the American people and, to a not inconsiderable extent, the abilities or predispositions of the successive occupants of the White House, they gave this informal institution of the first lady their unique, individual character. In the diverse pantheon of female presidents, an interesting figure and somewhat underrated was Woodrow Wilson’s first wife Ellen Axson Wilson, a lifelong companion for 29 years, prominently supporting him at all stages of his career, both in his academic work and later in his political activities. She was a devoted and trusted aide, advisor and supportive partner in his political career, first as Governor of New Jersey (1911–1913) and then, from 4 March 1913, as President of the United States. Ellen Axson Wilson only served as First Lady for 17 months, as she died prematurely on 6 August 1914. She was to some extent a representative of the emerging ‘new woman’, who tried to combine her private life and traditional femininity (she was a happy wife and mother) with public activity and a passion for painting. Her greatest achievement during her years in the White House was the social and reform work she undertook to improve the living conditions of poor neighborhoods in the capital and legislation in this area.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66904201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the issue of the presence of women in pre-industrial armies has not received much attention among researchers, the problem is still presented according to stereotypes shaped by nineteenth-century historiography and the early works of military historians. In their light, women in the armies of the early modern era assumed at best the role of servants, laundresses, cooks or offered sexual services. More recent works by historians of social military history, however, shed a completely different light on the issue, showing them not only as actively participating in army life, but also as taking up arms or seeking help for themselves and their soldiers’ orphans after the war. In this article, I will present the three roles of women that emerge from the sources – woman in armed combat, widow and mother – for the seventeenth-century Spanish army.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66903798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The indicated neologisms, labeling particular groups of people, duplicate and consolidate in the social opinion negative and – usually – deprecating judgments, contributing to the formation of stereotypes. The new labels (such as bedoesiara, julka, karyna, konserwatywka, and madka) result from expressive and valorizing cognitive simplifications. An emotional and humorous element dominate them because they are based on specific, emotional reactions to contact with the so-called typical units (cf. typical julka, typical rzepiara, typical madka). These neologisms, by labelling given groups of people, reproduce and reinforce in social opinion negative and, usually, biased judgments, which results in new stereotypes.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66904159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All of them wanted to broaden women’s access to education, up to equal rights with men. For some it was the main goal, as education was a chance for women to gain economic independence and subjectivity. Achieving these goals required not only the consent of the tsarist authorities, but also a change in the patriarchal attitude of society, including women themselves. Progress was gradual, but not systematic, and there were periods of regression. The main factor was the current political and social situation in the Empire, which was very dynamic at that time. Six decades saw the spread of co-educational primary schools and Sunday schools for adults, the creation of female high schools with a curriculum close to that of male gymnasia, and female colleges of a vocational nature. Independent, active, conscious and educated leaders of women’s movements have become role models for new generations of women.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66903935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

She was a daughter of Wacław Sieroszewski (1858–1945), the Polish man who was exiled to Siberia and Arina Czełba-Kysa (1860–1886), an Yackut woman who came from Wierchojańsk. Maria was a half-orphan. When she was a five-years-old-girl, her mother died. When she was sixteen years old, her father came back to Poland and left her with his friends in Czarist Russia. Machczyńska’s memoirs from 1860–1919, stored in the Warsaw and Lviv collections, as well as her journalistic and historical works were analyzed. Particular attention was focused on the analysis of the well-known historical sketch written by her for the Women’s Work Exhibition in Prague in 1912, entitled: “Polish Woman”, which she devoted entirely to discussing the history of Polish women from the earliest times to the present. Referring to the emancipatory aspirations of Polish women and her own life experiences, Machczyńska presented a specific image of 19th century women, focused on the motif of Klaudines – women active in the Klaudyna (née Działyńska) Potocka Society.","PeriodicalId":34781,"journal":{"name":"Czasopismo Naukowe Instytutu Studiow Kobiecych","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66904267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
