Approximations to the probability density functions of the ML SNR estimates in a sampled signal processing receiver as well as a continuous time signal processing receiver are derived. Two measures of signal-to-noise ratio are studied in detail. The results are general and apply to both static additive white Gaussian noise channels and slowly fading channels.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121062563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose E-span, which is an energy-aware spanning tree algorithm. E-Span is a distributed protocol and facilitates the sources within an event region to perform data aggregation. In E-span, the source node which has the highest residual energy is chosen as the root. Other source nodes choose their corresponding parent node among their neighbors based on the residual energy and distance to the root. By selecting the directed diffusion [C. Intanagonwiwat et al., Aug. 2000] as the underlying routing platform, simulation results show that the lifetime of sources can be extended significantly when E-Span is used.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115139513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the contents of the practical on-board education are not always clear to the students, because real situations include all things, not just simple linear knowledge. Real life, complex situations are difficult for them to understand it. We need some evaluation indices of navigational art/skill (performance) which conform the basis of the shiphandling in on-board education. So, we have been researching how to evaluate human navigators' performance using their physiological and behavioral information; however, our subject is just the navigator, not include a quartermaster and other bridge teammates. We need an advance evaluation including the bridge teammates except for the navigator. Also, the vessels with which we always are carried out the experiment are training ships, not general merchant ships. This paper describes the characteristics of the bridge teammates' mental workload for the merchant ships by wavelet transform, and we confirmed the response to the performance for the shiphandling is clear.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"66 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121871609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To aim at a quick response in security operation, it is necessary to forecast a fluctuation of attacks. However, there is no approach for predicting the fluctuation of attacks, since the fluctuation of attacks seems to be random. In this paper, we propose forecast techniques for predicting increase or decrease of the attacks by using the Bayesian inference for calculating the conditional probability based on past-observed event counts. We consider two algorithms by focusing on an attack cycle and a fluctuation range of the event counts. We implement a forecasting system and evaluate it with real IDS events. As a result, our proposed technique can forecast increase or decrease of the event counts, and be effective to various types of attacks.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133985471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, we consider a link model with fixed service levels which may be represented by a finite number of MPLS-label-switched-paths (LSPs). Our target is to classify a set of traffic streams each with arbitrary local QoS requirement, in addition to the bandwidth demand into a small number of service-levels while optimizing the residual-allocated-resources as a result of the traffic classification. The residual-allocated-resources is measured by the service-quantization-overhead which is the summation of the differences between the required QoS and the offered service-level for all traffic streams. We formulate the classification as a constrained integer-linear optimization problem. We then present two efficient algorithms based on branch and bound technique to obtain the optimal classification for a set of traffic streams for link models with predetermined service levels.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"3 21","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132339849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rayleigh fading cannot be perfectly modelled with any finite order auto-regressive (AR) process. Previously, only first and second order Kalman filters were used for channel estimation since higher order Kalman filters were found to not significantly improve accuracy. This is due to mismatches in the statistics of the AR models of the Kalman filters and the true Rayleigh fading. In this paper, the coefficients of the AR models for the Kalman filter are calculated by solving for the minimum square error solutions of an over-determined linear systems. The AR models generated have statistics closely matching the Rayleigh fading process. The Kalman filter using these AR models can accurately estimate the Rayleigh fading process. The accuracy of the new Kalman filters is demonstrated in the tracking of simulated Rayleigh fading processes of different bandwidths.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133837298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polynomial constraints are formulated for any signal constellation. The resulting relaxed constrained optimization problem is solved using a penalty function approach. Moreover, to escape from the local minima and to improve the performance of detection, a probabilistic restart algorithm based on noise statistics is proposed. Simulation results show that our polynomial constrained detectors perform better than several existing detectors.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"11 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113957945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a new approach for the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) realization of a high-quality Gaussian noise generator (GNG). The datapath of the GNG can be configured differently based on the required accuracy of the Gaussian probability density function (PDF). Since the GNG is often most conveniently implemented on the same FPGA as the design under evaluation, the area efficiency of the proposed GNG is important. For a particular configuration, the proposed design utilizes only 3% of the configurable slices and two on-chip block memories of a Virtex XC2V4000-6 FPGA to generate Gaussian samples within up to /spl plusmn/6.55/spl delta/, where /spl delta/ is the standard deviation, and can operate at up to 132 MHz.","PeriodicalId":346880,"journal":{"name":"PACRIM. 2005 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and signal Processing, 2005.","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125629737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
