These types of ventures center on breaking new ground and exploring the unknown. The process of this journey is experimentation; the basis of these undertakings is dealing with uncertainty. Ventures that are vague in nature tend to suffer from poor execution; the lack of definition impacts both productivity and efficiency. This paper presents the Groove - a framework of techniques that improve performance. The tactics are comprised of 3 parts: gaining perspective on certain principles that improve implementation (Guiding Principles), strategies to increase productivity (Mechanics), and tactical techniques to deal with inefficiencies. A case study is presented to illustrate the application of these methods. These tactics have been successfully implemented in multiple industries as well as academia.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125771454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The foundation of this effort centers on continuous innovation beginning with experimentation. Experimentation can be an effective means to generate and foster innovation in organizations where it is not a core competency or widely accepted. Establishing and driving innovation in organizations steeped in the traditional can be very difficult and you will face challenges in many areas, including, culture, structure, process, and resources. This paper will outline how leading with experimentation can help establish and grow an innovation culture within your organization.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130029801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the analysis of data is currently being discussed in research and practice across a wide range of areas, but mainly with focus on production. Improved data availability is not only a relevant factor in production, but also in other areas such as the management of product complexity. A major challenge in this area is the tradeoff between standardization and customer-specific solutions. For this reason, transparency about product complexity is necessary in the first step. However, the available data is only used insufficiently and unstructured for complexity management in companies today. A data-based analysis of product complexity-relevant questions can thus guarantee realtime transparency and controllability of product complexity. There is no systematic and data-based method for improving transparency and controllability of product complexity. This paper deals with the development of a generic procedure for the analysis of product complexity by means of product complexity-relevant questions using a data model. Based on the current state of research, this paper presents a procedure for the data-based analysis of product complexity. Key elements of the procedure are product complexity-relevant questions, key figures, a derived data model and determined visualization requirements.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122232338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We hold a hybrid approach combining qualitative and quantitative models to investigate human competence levels and autonomy degree of the technological components. The qualitative analysis leads to establish the Vector of Competence and Autonomy (VCA) for identifying the extent of human-CPPS collaboration in decision-making. The quantitative analysis involves human factors such as and operation/handling time, error probability rate and learnability rate in association to various combination of technological components of Digital Assistance Systems (DAS) with different automation degrees. We instantiate the VCA using the outcomes of quantitative analysis. Applying a set of rules, we interpret VCA values, infer the current state of complementarity, and identify feasible radical or incremental transitions to reach the optimal (desired) level of human-CPPS collaboration in a smart factory. The entire approach contributes in identifying the impact of Industry 4.0 on human-CPPS complementarity in decision-making tasks, which is investigated in the context of TU Wien Pilot Factory Industry 4.0.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125691057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on a knowledge-based perspective on open innovation, we introduce a new theoretical model, the external technology scouting model of innovation outputs, to explain how technology scouting and absorptive capability predict firms' innovation generation in an uncertain technological environment. Using a sample of 236 high-technology firms, we examine main, two-way and three-way interaction effects for measures of innovation generation. Overall, the results suggest that external technology scouting enhances innovation generation by improving the absorptive capability in an uncertain technological environment; these findings have notable managerial and research implications.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124735189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through technological capability (TC) lens, a three-layer model is developed, which can be used to unravel the process that firms achieve paradigm shift from closed to open innovation through developing TC. Specifically, this framework focuses on how ICTs support enterprise obtaining, integrating and commercializing external sources of innovation. This paper also considers the role of ICT in supporting firms to collaborate with external actors, and analyzes how the innovation networking in turn drives the ICTs adoption by firms to leverage external sources of innovation.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124867113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a need for academic programs that concentrate on systems engineering practices with special attention to management and technology issues for a global market, including developing countries. A quick study of extant systems engineering academic programs has revealed that most do not consider information systems and engineering management topics. This paper describes an innovative graduate studies program that prepares well rounded systems engineers whose knowledge cuts across information systems, systems engineering, and engineering management for different populations. Highly flexible concentrations and capstone projects allow the students to gain knowledge in diverse sectors such as health, education, public safety, public welfare, energy, environment, agriculture and manufacturing. The steady growth in enrollments testifies to the appeal of this program.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124912715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Project portfolio management (PPM) is considered to be one of the aspect, where, a complete management i.e from strategy level to successful implementation of the strategy can be done in a very standardized manner. It's been a proven fact through theory and practice that organizations derive success through PPM and also help the organizations in short term and long-term benefits. Indian Auto component Industry, on one side riding on the success of supplying the quality parts to the OEM's but on the other side, struggling hard to cope up with the dynamic nature of the growing market of vehicles. This paper deals with the study of PPM in Indian Auto component Industry and is restricted to the exploratory factor analysis of the research which leads to derivation of the factors for further analysis.","PeriodicalId":346867,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Conference (TEMSCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130958048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
